Those figures describe one company and one reporting basis; they do not, by themselves, show whether Tokyu is more profitable or cheaper than Kajima, Obayashi, Shimizu or Taisei. A fair comparison requires matching fiscal periods and accounting scope, separating operating performance from one-off gains, and using market prices from the same date.
Start with fiscal-year dates and accounting scope
Japanese issuers may label fiscal years differently. Obayashi, for example, calls April 2025 through March 2026 FY2025, while another company may label the year by its ending calendar year. Always write the start and end dates rather than comparing “FY2026” labels alone. Also distinguish consolidated accounts, which include controlled subsidiaries, from nonconsolidated parent-company accounts.

Tokyu Construction’s FY ended March 31, 2026 results are consolidated. Obayashi’s captured actual results for that same period are explicitly nonconsolidated, so placing their figures side by side as though they were equivalent would be misleading. Obayashi’s own investor-relations materials distinguish FY2025 (April 2025–March 2026) from FY2026 (April 2026–March 2027): Obayashi investor relations.
What the reported figures show—and what they do not
The available company disclosures provide useful examples, but not a complete, same-basis peer ranking. The figures below retain each issuer’s accounting scope and period rather than implying direct comparability.

Tokyu Construction’s results and management’s explanation of them are presented in its shareholder and investor-relations materials. Management attributed performance to robust domestic construction demand, digital technology and on-site ingenuity, and reflecting cost fluctuations in contract prices. These are management’s explanations, not independently verified causes.
Obayashi’s nonconsolidated actual net income being higher than operating profit is a reminder that the bottom line can be affected by items outside core operations. Its forecast figures are management estimates, not realized outcomes. Neither set should be treated as a consolidated peer comparison with Tokyu Construction.

Compare operating economics before net income
For each company, line up net sales, operating income and operating margin for the same fiscal period and accounting perimeter. Operating margin is operating income divided by net sales. It helps distinguish a larger contractor from one converting a greater share of revenue into operating profit, though it does not erase differences in project mix or accounting scope.

Construction earnings can shift with project selection and execution: cost estimates, labor and material costs, claims, change orders and provisions for troubled projects all matter. Obayashi’s FY2026 forecast Q&A discusses project cost reviews and change orders, and gives a 13.0% forecast gross margin on completed construction contracts. That is a company forecast for a specific measure, not an industry-wide margin or an achieved result: Obayashi investor-relations materials.

After operating income, compare ordinary income, net income and EPS separately. Ordinary income includes non-operating items; net income can also reflect taxes and exceptional gains or losses. EPS adds the effect of shares outstanding, so it is not interchangeable with total profit.
Check whether profit growth is recurring
Shimizu’s July 30, 2026 disclosure illustrates why headline net-income growth needs context. The company said unusual affiliate-related earnings and gains on sales of investment securities had lifted first-quarter ordinary income and net income. It raised forecasts for those profit lines by ¥35.5 billion while leaving its sales and operating-income forecasts unchanged. This does not establish that the core construction business improved by the same amount.

Use segment mix and order visibility to explain differences
Two contractors with similar sales can have different earnings profiles because their businesses are not identical. Where disclosed on a comparable basis, orders received and backlog can add context about future workload. They are not guaranteed future sales or profit: timing, project costs, cancellations and execution still matter. The available figures here do not provide a complete, harmonized order and backlog comparison across Tokyu Construction and all major peers.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Value shares only with a dated, consistent market snapshot
Tokyu Construction’s investor-relations page displayed a share-price snapshot dated September 24, 2026: share price ¥1,221, forecast P/E 11.8, actual P/B 1.2 and expected dividend yield 3.5%. These are date-specific figures, not undated current quotes; the company’s stock information page identifies the snapshot date.
No complete same-date set of valuation multiples for Tokyu Construction, Kajima, Obayashi, Shimizu and Taisei is established by the cited materials. The Tokyu snapshot therefore cannot show that it is the cheapest or most attractive of the group. A sound comparison needs a common quote date and matching definitions: trailing or forecast P/E, actual or forecast P/B, and indicated dividend yield. It should also align forecast horizons and share counts, and consider whether earnings include one-off gains.

- P/B: Specify whether book value is actual or forecast and use a consistent reporting date.

Build a comparison without filling gaps with guesses
For a practical spreadsheet, use one row per company and record the reporting period, consolidation basis and source beside every figure. Keep company-reported values separate from calculations such as operating margin, and calculate valuation multiples only after aligning prices and earnings estimates to one date and horizon.
- Record consolidated sales, operating income and operating margin for the same fiscal year.
- Show ordinary income, net income and EPS separately; note unusual gains or losses that affect earnings quality.
- Compare business segments and, where available, orders and backlog on clearly defined bases.
- Add cash, interest-bearing debt, equity and operating cash flow only when reliable, comparable figures are available for each issuer.
- Include dated market capitalization, valuation multiples and dividend measures only when the price date and calculation basis match.
Tokyu Corporation and Tokyu Construction are separate issuers. Tokyu Corporation’s materials may help clarify its own reporting labels, but its results must not be attributed to Tokyu Construction. Its translated FY ended March 2026 report says the translation is for reference and the Japanese original prevails in case of discrepancy: Tokyu Corporation earnings materials.
