Citrini Research argues that if traditional financial assets move onto blockchain networks in large numbers, the most direct financial winners could be the companies and protocols that charge fees on trading, lending, settlement and related infrastructure, rather than bitcoin or ether. The claim is a conditional thesis, not a forecast. It assumes tokenization grows, and it does not show that the companies and tokens the report names will outperform.
What Citrini actually argues
Citrini published Breaking The Wall: Has Blockchain Finally Reached Its Moment? on October 8, 2026. The report argues that stocks, Treasuries, credit, commodities and other financial assets could join existing crypto applications, creating business opportunities in financial applications and the infrastructure beneath them. Its central point concerns where money flows, not whether tokenization happens at all. In the report’s words:

“This left me wondering…if we’re right, the relevant question for any investor isn’t simply whether more assets become tokenized. It’s where the economics accrue.”

That shift in question is the core of the piece. The report also warns that higher trading volume or network activity does not necessarily mean higher token prices. Investors therefore need to examine how a protocol makes money, who receives the fees, and whether token holders receive any share of them.

Why fee capture could differ from bitcoin and ether
The distinction Citrini draws is between holding a network’s native asset and owning a business or protocol that collects fees from activity taking place on top of it. Tokenized stocks, lending against tokenized collateral, and onchain trading are all examples of activity that could generate fees. Citrini’s suggestion is that the businesses collecting those fees could be more direct beneficiaries of growth than bitcoin or ether. That comparison is itself a hypothesis; the report does not measure it.
What “tokenized” can mean
The report describes tokenized traditional assets as digital tokens on blockchain networks. In its account, a tokenized stock could be used as collateral for borrowing from a digital wallet, and assets could move between financial platforms. These are possible capabilities, not universal features, and their availability depends on the product and the platform.

The phrase “tokenized stock” also hides legal differences. SEC staff investor education material separates three structures, and the structure determines what the buyer actually holds.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches| Structure | What the token represents | Holder’s position | Claim against the issuer |
|---|---|---|---|
| Issuer-sponsored | A security issued by the company or its agent | Can carry the same rights as a traditional share, though it may represent a different class | Can match a traditional share’s rights |
| Custodial | An interest held through a securities intermediary | An indirect interest; the intermediary’s arrangement shapes the rights | Indirect, not a direct claim on the issuer |
| Synthetic | Exposure that tracks the price of a referenced security | Price exposure only | None against the referenced security’s issuer |
A buyer of a synthetic token may follow a stock’s price without any claim on the company that issued it. Do not assume that a tokenized product carries voting, dividend or redemption rights unless its documents say so.
The companies and protocols named
Public companies
CoinDesk’s contemporaneous coverage reports that the public-company examples in the thesis are:
- Securitize
- Coinbase
- Robinhood
- Circle
- Figure Technology Solutions
- SoFi
- Bullish
Their connections to the thesis vary, spanning tokenization and securities records, trading and blockchain infrastructure, stablecoin settlement, lending, and exchange operations. They illustrate where Citrini thinks economics could land. They are not recommendations.

Crypto protocols
The crypto basket is broader: Aerodrome, Maple, Pendle, Ondo Finance, Aave, Uniswap, Ethena, ether.fi, Chainlink, LayerZero, Derive, Lighter, Variational and Hyperliquid. The roles the report associates with the basket include trading, lending, yield products, tokenized assets, data, interoperability, options and perpetual futures. These businesses do not share one model. Revenue, token-holder rights, liquidity and exposure differ from name to name, so the basket should not be read as a single bet.
How to test the claim
A more useful question than “tokenization or bitcoin?” is which layer captures revenue, and whether any of that revenue reaches the token under consideration. The checks below turn the report’s framing into questions an investor can answer from primary documents.
Best Value
| Check | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Economic capture | Which company or protocol earns fees from issuance, trading, lending, settlement, custody or data? Do token holders have a claim on that revenue, or does it accrue elsewhere? |
| Rights and structure | Does the buyer hold the security itself, a custodial entitlement, or synthetic price exposure? Which voting, dividend, redemption or issuer-claim rights apply? |
| Liquidity and interoperability | Can the asset move across venues and chains, and is liquidity split among them? The report flags fragmentation as a risk. |
| Security and operations | What can fail in smart contracts, custody arrangements, bridges or venue operations? The report flags these concerns but gives no quantified estimate of their likelihood or cost. |
| Regulatory status | Is the product covered by a specific registration, rule or limited exemption, and what conditions attach to it? The existence of a token or venue does not settle its legal status. |
Where regulation stands
On September 17, 2026, the SEC issued temporary, conditional relief for specified distributed-ledger trading venues and liquidity providers dealing in certain tokenized NMS stocks. NMS refers to the National Market System framework that governs exchange-listed US equities. The order, published in the Federal Register, defines its scope and excludes synthetic exposure products from the covered category.
That relief is narrow. It is not blanket approval of tokenized stocks, and it does not cover every crypto venue. Citrini’s own wording on legal status is conditional. It argues that the investor question should move from whether tokenization will be legal to who captures the economics once these products enter the US:
“It’s clear to us that legislation is being pieced together with or without a huge bill, and the question for investors should shift from ‘will tokenization be legal?’ toward ‘who captures the economics when these products eventually enter the US?'”

What the evidence does and does not establish
Neither the report page nor the contemporaneous CoinDesk account gives a verified market-size or adoption figure. The thesis rests on a structural argument about where fees could land, not on measured scale. Nothing in these sources shows how much trading, lending or settlement will move onchain, or over what period.
What the sources do support is narrower:
- The report treats fee capture, not token adoption, as the investing question, and it makes that argument as a conditional thesis.
- Tokenized products differ in rights, and the SEC’s investor material tells buyers to check which structure they hold.
- The September 2026 regulatory relief is limited and conditional, and it excludes synthetic exposure products.
The most defensible reading is that Citrini has identified a plausible question for investors: if tokenization grows, who collects the fees? It has not shown that the answer favors any named company or token. The comparison with bitcoin and ether remains a hypothesis that depends on adoption, on fee recipients, and on whether token holders share in the revenue.
