Token Bus Network Definition: How IEEE 802.4 Token Passing Works

A token bus network is a LAN in which stations share a bus cable and only the station holding the token may transmit. Here is how IEEE 802.4 token passing works, how it differs from token ring, and what its history shows.

A token bus network is a local area network (LAN) in which stations share a physical bus cable but take turns transmitting. Turns are controlled by a token that is passed from station to station in a defined logical order. The access method is associated with the IEEE 802.4 standard, and its defining feature is that a station may transmit only while it holds the token.

How the token controls access

The token is a control mechanism that grants permission to transmit. Instead of stations competing to send whenever they like, each one waits for the token to arrive. The cycle works as follows:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  1. A station receives the token. It may transmit its queued data for the time it is allowed to hold the token.
  2. When it finishes, it passes the token to the next station in the logical sequence.
  3. A station with nothing to send does not keep the token. It passes it onward immediately.
  4. The token circulates through every station in the sequence and then starts again, so each station gets regular opportunities to transmit.

Because permission is handed along rather than contested, token passing is designed to avoid the collisions that occur when two stations start transmitting on a shared channel at the same moment. IEEE’s general overview of token networks describes this as deterministic access, meaning the order of access is known in advance. That description does not guarantee a particular waiting time in every 802.4 configuration. Actual delay depends on how many stations are on the network, how much data each one sends, and how the network is set up. See the IEEE Technology Navigator overview of token networks for the general principle.

Physical bus, logical order

The word “bus” describes the physical layout: stations attach to a shared cable. The token’s logical order is separate from that layout. The sequence in which the token travels does not have to match the physical position of stations along the cable.

This is the main point that separates a token bus from a token ring. In a token ring, the cable itself forms a closed physical loop. A token bus has no such requirement; the ring exists only as a logical sequence of token passes. Installation and cabling details vary by implementation and are not covered here.

Token bus compared with other LAN access methods

The useful comparisons are between how each method decides who may transmit and what that means for predictability when traffic is heavy.

Why token bus was used

Token passing suited environments where orderly access and bounded waiting times mattered more than the lowest possible cost per port. Industrial automation is the setting most closely associated with token bus in the available sources. A National Institute of Standards and Technology workshop report, Special Publication 500-127, is devoted to analytic and simulation modeling of IEEE 802.4 token bus local area networks, which reflects how engineers evaluated its performance.

What happened to token-based LANs

IEEE’s historical overview states that Ethernet displaced token-based LANs in most enterprise settings by the mid-1990s. That is a broad characterization of the market, not proof that every token bus installation was removed. Specialist and legacy use may still exist, but current deployment is not established by the sources reviewed for this article.

The IETF’s RFC 1230, “IEEE 802.4 Token Bus MIB”, published in May 1991, defines management information for IEEE 802.4 interfaces. It shows that token bus was a managed networking technology at that time. It does not show that the technology is in wide use today.

What is established and what is not

  • Established: token bus is a LAN access method associated with IEEE 802.4; it uses a shared bus with token-controlled transmission; and it was studied for industrial and performance-modeling purposes.
  • Not established here: the current formal status of IEEE 802.4, the exact physical-layer options, the full frame format, and whether current commercial equipment is still sold.

Readers who need implementation detail should consult the IEEE 802.4 standard text directly, or a networking textbook. Many computer networking and data communications textbooks include a token bus section; the ScienceDirect overview of token bus lists a reference chapter that covers it. Any specific edition should be checked for current availability.
