What is TOEFLGemma AI?
TOEFLGemma AI is a project described in a DEV Community article by DinitaKs as an offline study mentor for a colleague preparing for the TOEFL iBT. The author says it uses Gemma 2 2B, run locally through Ollama, with a custom Modelfile and system prompt. A local chat interface such as AnythingLLM or Page Assist is also mentioned.

That description makes TOEFLGemma a locally configured AI study aid, rather than an official TOEFL product. The project article reports setup instructions including ollama run gemma2:2b, but these instructions should not be treated as a guarantee that the model, interface, or configuration will work with every current operating system or software version.

What practice does the project describe?
The author lists several kinds of support aimed at academic English practice:

The project article refers to Speaking Tasks 1–4 and integrated writing. Those labels and frameworks describe the project’s approach; they do not establish that its templates correspond to the TOEFL iBT as currently administered.
Does TOEFLGemma work offline, and is it private?
The project author describes TOEFLGemma as offline and privacy-focused because the model is run locally. The cited project description does not independently test network behavior, audit data handling, or measure performance. Treat offline use and privacy as intended characteristics, not verified guarantees. In practice, local inference depends on the installed model and software configuration; the article does not establish that every part of setup or later use requires no internet connection.

Is it aligned with the TOEFL iBT in 2026?
Not on the evidence available. ETS says the TOEFL iBT format changed effective January 21, 2026. The current test has Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking sections, an adaptive test experience, and a 1–6 score scale. Its listed tasks include:
- Reading: Complete the Words, Read in Daily Life, and Read an Academic Passage.
- Listening: Listen and Choose a Response, Listen to a Conversation, Listen to an Announcement, and Listen to an Academic Talk.
- Writing: Build a Sentence, Write an Email, and Write for an Academic Discussion.
- Speaking: Listen and Repeat and Take an Interview.
Because TOEFLGemma’s article describes older task labels and frameworks, compare any template it produces with ETS’s current task descriptions before using it as exam-specific practice. A general language exercise may still be useful, but that alone does not make it an accurate simulation of the current test.

How should you use it as a study aid?
- Check the current exam task first. Use ETS’s TOEFL iBT test content and structure to identify the task you want to practice.
- Give the assistant a narrow practice prompt. For example, ask it to explain an academic word in simpler language and provide an example, or to suggest a note-taking approach for an academic listening passage.
- Verify task-specific advice. If it offers a response framework, check whether the framework fits the current ETS task rather than relying on an older task number or format.
- Use it for practice, not a score prediction. The project article provides no benchmark, user study, or verified estimate of TOEFL performance improvement.
What equipment or purchases are established as necessary?
The cited project description does not establish that a particular laptop, microphone, headset, preparation book, or notebook is required or specifically recommended. Nor does it provide hardware specifications from which to determine whether a given computer can run the model well. Avoid treating these items as project requirements on the basis of the article alone.
