For a toddler with eczema, skip bar soap and look for a mild, fragrance-free non-soap cleanser. Routine baths may not need cleanser at all: use it only on areas that need washing, such as sweaty skin, hands, and feet.
What can you use to wash a toddler with eczema?
The American Academy of Dermatology advises caregivers to skip bar soaps because they can dry and irritate a child’s skin, and to use a mild, fragrance-free cleanser instead. The American Academy of Pediatrics says routine bathing does not require soap; a gentle non-soap cleanser can be used on sweaty areas and the hands and feet.

How to choose a cleanser
- Choose fragrance-free. The AAD notes that “unscented” can mean fragrance has been masked, while “fragrance-free” means fragrances are absent. The terms are not interchangeable.
- Look for mild and non-soap. Use cleanser only where needed rather than washing the whole body with it at every bath.
- Check the current label. Formulas and packaging can change, so verify the product’s current claims and intended use before buying.
- Use the NEA Seal as one screening tool. The National Eczema Association’s directory includes cleansers. Its Seal reflects voluntary evaluation for suitability for people with eczema and sensitive skin; it is not an endorsement or a guarantee that an individual toddler will tolerate a product. Check both the current directory and package label.
How to bathe and moisturize
- Use warm or lukewarm water, not hot water.
- Keep the bath short: the AAD recommends five to ten minutes.
- Skip bubble bath and avoid scrubbing. Use a gentle cleanser only on areas that need it.
- Pat the skin dry gently rather than rubbing.
- Apply moisturizer promptly while the skin is still damp.
When to contact your child’s clinician
This is general product-selection guidance, not a diagnosis or treatment plan. Contact your child’s clinician if the skin is getting worse, remains irritated, or may be infected. Do not substitute bleach baths for routine cleansing; the AAD recommends discussing them with the child’s dermatologist when eczema is frequently infected.
