On October 1, 2011, Cult of Mac reported that code in an iTunes beta had revealed the name “iPhone 4S” and black and white color options before Apple’s announcement. The report said Siri was still a surprise. Apple announced the phone three days later, confirming its features and launch plans—but its press releases do not independently verify what the beta code contained.
What did the iTunes beta reportedly reveal?
Cult of Mac’s retrospective dates the slip to October 1, 2011, and says the latest iTunes beta inadvertently exposed the iPhone 4S name along with black and white color choices. The original beta artifact is not available in the cited material, so those details are attributable to Cult of Mac rather than independently confirmed from the code.
The reported leak was limited: it gave away the product name and colors, but not the feature that became the phone’s most prominent new capability. Cult of Mac says Siri remained a surprise.
What Apple confirmed after the report
At its October 4, 2011 announcement, Apple introduced iPhone 4S alongside iOS 5 and iCloud. The company listed a dual-core A5 chip, an 8-megapixel camera, 1080p video recording, and Siri among the phone’s features. The announcement establishes what Apple presented publicly; it does not corroborate the earlier account of the beta leak.

- 【Strong Adsorption】The inspiration of the silicone phone suction case comes from the adhesive force of the octopus. Each suction cup phone mount is 3.15 inches long and 2.17 inches wide, with 24 independent suction cups providing a stronger and more stable suction force, so you don't have to worry about your phone falling during use.
- 【Back of Phone Suction Grip】Remove the adhesive film on the phone suction cup and stick it on the phone case. You can then fix the phone on any smooth surface, which is very convenient. (The phone suction cup cannot be removed and reused after being attached to the phone case. It is recommended to attach it to a regular phone case, not a valuable one.)
- 【Widely Used】Our non-slip silicone phone sticky grip mount attaches to almost any flat phone case and make it compatible with common mobile phones such as iPhone and Android. You can shoot, watch videos or video calls in the kitchen, gym, dance studio, bathroom and other places.
- 【Capture the Wonderful Picture】Whether you are a TikTok creator or just like to share videos and photos, this phone suction cup can help you hands-free capture wonderful videos and photos for sharing with friends.
- 【Note】You can fix the phone suction cup on a smooth surface such as a mirror or glass. If necessary, wipe the suction cup with a damp cloth to obtain stronger suction. Before releasing your hand, make sure the phone is firmly fixed. (Not applicable to rough walls, wooden surfaces, and other uneven surfaces)
Apple said the iPhone 4S would become available on October 14. On October 17, the company reported more than four million phones sold in the first three days. It also listed black and white finishes and 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB configurations.
The short timeline
- October 1, 2011: Cult of Mac dates its report of the iTunes beta leak to this day.
- October 4, 2011: Apple announced iPhone 4S, iOS 5, and iCloud, and outlined the phone’s features.
- October 14, 2011: Apple’s announced initial availability date for iPhone 4S.
- October 17, 2011: Apple reported more than four million sales in the first three days and specified the available colors and storage capacities.
Why the leak mattered
The reported code spoiled a small part of Apple’s planned reveal: the name and color choices. It did not, according to the retrospective, give away Siri, which Apple highlighted at the announcement. That contrast makes the episode a modest but telling example of how a software beta can expose product details ahead of a launch—while also showing why a leak report and an official product announcement are different kinds of evidence.
