For a successful remote livestream appearance, follow the host’s joining instructions, test your camera, microphone and connection before airtime, and agree on what to do if something goes wrong. You usually do not need studio equipment: a working webcam and mic, a quiet place, and headphones or earbuds are a sensible starting point.
What do I need to join a live stream as a guest?
Start with the setup the host specifies. For a StreamYard appearance, guests can join from a laptop or desktop with a webcam and microphone, and mobile joining is also possible; instructions vary by device. StreamYard lists Chrome, Edge, Firefox and Opera in its guest instructions. Browser and device support can change, so check the host’s latest directions rather than assuming every platform works the same way.

- A device with a working camera and microphone.
- A recent browser or app compatible with the host’s platform.
- A reliable internet connection; use Ethernet if it is available and practical.
- Headphones or earbuds to reduce the chance of echo.
- The host’s joining link and a way to contact them if it fails.
Prepare before the day
Confirm the details with the host
Check the date, time zone, expected arrival time, joining link, format and topic. Ask whether you will need to share slides or your screen, and how the host wants you to do that. It is also sensible to ask whom to contact if the link or your connection fails. These are practical questions, not universal platform requirements.
If the appearance matters or you are unfamiliar with the setup, ask whether the host can arrange a brief private tech check. StreamYard’s Greenroom is a host-side waiting area for preparing with guests before they enter the studio; its Help Center says availability is limited to Teams and Business plans, so a host should verify access for their plan. Use the equipment you already have first
A laptop or desktop is often a straightforward choice if it suits the host’s workflow. A phone can also work when the platform supports it and you follow the device-specific instructions. You do not need to buy a microphone or camera just to appear: test your existing equipment first and only consider an upgrade if a specific problem remains.
Choose a quiet place, close unnecessary applications and browser tabs, and connect to your router with Ethernet when possible. StreamYard recommends a strong connection and notes in its guest instructions that Ethernet can help; YouTube also recommends Ethernet for computer streaming in its filming tips for live streaming. No single internet-speed threshold is established here for every guest, platform and show.

Test your setup before joining the show
- Open the link early. Allow the browser or app to access your camera and microphone when prompted.
- Select the intended devices. Check that the right camera and microphone are selected in the platform, along with the correct audio output.
- Say a few words and listen. Ask someone to confirm they can hear you, and check for echo, clipping or very low volume. StreamYard explicitly recommends earbuds or headphones to prevent audio echoes; test what you already own before buying anything.
- Check the picture. Make sure your face is visible and the camera is steady. If you are using a phone or a camera that moves easily, a tripod or stand can help. YouTube recommends stabilizing a camera with a tripod or similar accessory.
- Test your internet connection. If the picture freezes or audio breaks up, try a more reliable connection, move closer to the router or use Ethernet if available. Close apps and tabs you do not need.
- Rehearse screen sharing if needed. Ask the host when and how they want slides or a screen shown. The controls available to a guest depend on the platform and the host’s setup.
YouTube recommends checking equipment before a live stream and testing an unlisted stream when you are setting up your own broadcast. As a guest, you may not control the host’s stream visibility or settings, so ask the host if they can arrange a suitable test rather than trying to change broadcast settings yourself.

- Keep the show link open and silence notifications that might interrupt you.
- Confirm the host can see and hear you.
- Keep your agreed backup contact method available.
- Take a moment to settle in and listen for any last instructions.
Silencing notifications and arranging a same-day check are also suggested in StreamYard’s vendor-authored guide to streaming interviews; they are useful options, not rules every show must follow. Do not assume the host will record, edit or distribute the appearance unless they have told you so.

Know which controls belong to you
On StreamYard, a guest can use a camera and microphone and may be able to share a screen, video or slides. Guests cannot start or stop the broadcast, change broadcast settings, add themselves or their shared content to the broadcast, or control graphics and layouts. Those controls belong to the host. Troubleshoot common guest problems
