It is a pretrained model for forecasting numerical time-series data. It shares a decoder-only transformer architecture with many language models, but it takes sequences of values as input and predicts future values—not words or open-ended answers.
“Foundation model” describes its breadth across forecasting tasks, not general-purpose intelligence. TimesFM can make zero-shot forecasts without task-specific training, but its job remains forecasting.

What TimesFM 3.0 does—and what it does not do
TimesFM 3.0 forecasts future values in one or more time series: for example, future demand, foot traffic, or another measured quantity. It is not designed to chat, answer general questions, or generate prose.
The distinction is about the model’s inputs and targets, not just its underlying architecture. A language model processes text tokens and predicts text; TimesFM processes numerical observations and predicts future observations. Google Research’s technical explanations describe its task as forecasting future time-series patches.

Why a decoder-only transformer does not make it an LLM
TimesFM represents contiguous groups of time points as patches, which play a role analogous to tokens in a language model. Google’s original TimesFM explainer describes a patch as a group of contiguous time points treated as a token. That is a useful architectural analogy, not evidence that the model understands language.
For TimesFM 3.0, Google says each patch contains 32 time steps. The model uses causal temporal attention within each series and attention across series at the same time step. It masks the future target patches, then predicts the forecast horizon in one forward pass. When future covariates are known—such as a planned promotion—they can remain visible to the model and inform its forecast.
Rank #2
TimesFM 3.0 also predicts nine quantiles at each forecast step, from the 10th through the 90th percentile, according to Google Research’s August 31, 2026 announcement. Quantiles give a range of forecast outcomes rather than only a single point estimate; they do not turn the model into a conversational system.
What “foundation model” means here
In this context, “foundation” refers to pretraining on a large collection of time-series data with the aim of generalizing to different forecasting tasks. A user may be able to apply the model without task-specific training—often called zero-shot forecasting. The claim is meaningful within that domain: one pretrained forecaster can be used across multiple time-series problems.
Rank #3
It does not mean that TimesFM is a general-purpose foundation model for language, reasoning, or arbitrary tasks. The label can sound broader than the actual capability. A more precise description is a general-purpose pretrained time-series forecaster.
What is new in TimesFM 3.0
Version 3 expands native multivariate forecasting: it can forecast related target series together and use both past-only and known-future covariates. Google’s examples include foot traffic, promotions, weather, and holidays. This matters when the target is influenced by other observed series or by planned events, rather than evolving in isolation.

Google Research reports that TimesFM 3.0 has 330 million parameters and was pretrained on more than one trillion real and synthetic time points. These are Google’s figures in its 2026 announcement. They describe the current version; they should not be treated as directly comparable measurements to the earlier TimesFM model, which Google described in 2024 as having 200 million parameters and training on 100 billion real-world time points. The versions’ corpus composition and measurement methods are not necessarily identical.

Google Research reports that TimesFM 3.0 ranked highest among pretrained foundation models on the point- and probabilistic-forecasting metrics it evaluated across Gift-Eval, FEV-Bench, and TIME. Its reported comparisons include Chronos-2, the Toto 2.0 family, and TimesFM-2.5.
Best Value
That is a result on a named benchmark suite, reported by the model’s developer—not a guarantee that TimesFM will be the best choice for every dataset, forecast horizon, or business objective. To decide whether it works for a particular use, compare candidate methods on held-out data from that use case and measure the error or decision cost that matters in practice.

| Route | Commercial use | What to weigh |
|---|---|---|
| Download and self-host the pretrained weights | The official repository says the weights have a separate non-commercial license; its September 2026 notice says commercial and production use of downloaded or self-hosted weights is not allowed. | You manage the model and infrastructure. The repository’s Apache-2.0 license applies to its source code, not as a replacement for the weights’ separate license. |
| Use TimesFM through BigQuery ML | Google Cloud says BigQuery-hosted use is governed by Google Cloud terms and is not restricted by the downloaded-weight non-commercial license. | This is a managed cloud workflow rather than self-hosting. Review current Cloud terms and documentation for availability and billing before deployment. |
The deployment route therefore affects both operating responsibilities and permitted use. Google Cloud’s AI.FORECAST reference says TimesFM 3.0 usage is under Preview-era billing and is scheduled to move to token-based pricing on December 1, 2026. Because that date is still in the future as of October 5, 2026, check the live documentation rather than relying on an old price estimate.
When to consider another forecasting method
TimesFM is one option, not an automatic replacement for every forecasting workflow. Google Cloud’s forecasting overview also presents ARIMA-based alternatives for users who want more tuning control or explainability. A practical choice depends on what the task needs:
Quick Recap
- Related series or planned inputs: consider whether the forecast should use multivariate targets or known-future covariates.
- Model control: consider whether you need to tune a method closely to a particular series or process.
- Interpretability: consider whether stakeholders need to understand the model’s behavior, not just inspect its forecast.
- Evidence on your data: compare methods using held-out observations and the evaluation measure tied to the real decision.
