You can track time against Notion tasks either by building a manual time log in a Notion database or by connecting a dedicated tracker. Notion’s documented buttons and formulas can support a DIY log, but the reviewed Notion documentation does not describe a dedicated native start/stop timer. Clockify documents a timer that appears on Notion pages; TimeCamp can import Notion tasks and optionally write tracked time back to a Notion number property.

Does Notion have a built-in time tracker?

Notion provides database buttons, properties, and formulas that can be assembled into a manual time-tracking workflow. Its [database buttons] can add database pages or edit properties, while [formulas] can calculate from dates and numbers. The reviewed official documentation does not describe a dedicated native start/stop timer, so treat a Notion-only setup as a DIY log rather than a built-in timer.

Notion says, “Database buttons take actions on your behalf with one click.” Button availability and actions depend on plan and permissions: the guide says buttons are available on all plans, but some actions are restricted to paid plans, and editing or adding database pages requires suitable access. Check the current plan details and ensure users can edit the target database before relying on a button workflow.

How do I track time in a Notion database?

A separate time-log database is more useful than repeatedly overwriting one duration field on a task. Each work session gets its own record, so a task can have multiple entries and you can group or summarize them later.

Build a time-log database

  1. Create a database for work sessions. Add a title property or a relation to your task database, and add a project relation if you organize work by project.
  2. Add date properties named Start and End. Record the time the session begins and the time it ends.
  3. Add a formula property for duration, using the start and end dates to calculate elapsed time. Notion formulas support date properties and arithmetic, but the exact formula depends on the units and display you want; confirm it against your workspace’s current formula syntax.
  4. Add a button on a task page that creates a page in the time-log database and fills in the task relation and start time. Add a separate stop button or action that edits that log entry to set its end time.
  5. Create views grouped or filtered by task or project. If useful, use relations and rollups to summarize logged durations on task or project pages.

This is a suggested construction from documented Notion features, not a vendor-provided or independently tested template. Test the buttons and formula in your own workspace before using the totals for reporting.

Prevent incomplete entries from distorting totals

  • Do not treat a blank end time as a completed duration. An active session has no final elapsed time until it is stopped.
  • Test how the formula handles an empty end date. Notion warns that database automations can fail when date calculations use empty or undefined fields; failures can pause automations.
  • Make sure the person clicking a button has permission to edit the relevant database.
  • If you add trigger-based automation, account for Notion’s documented three-second change-scan window. Do not assume an automation reacts instantaneously.

How do I calculate hours in a Notion database?

Use date properties for the session’s start and end, then a formula property to calculate their difference. The result can be displayed in the unit that suits your workflow; if you want a total on a task or project page, relations and rollups are available as additional database building blocks. Notion’s [formula documentation] covers date properties and calculations.

Decide how to handle unfinished sessions before using totals: an empty end date should not be counted as a completed duration. Also test whether your chosen formula produces the intended result for sessions that cross midnight or have missing values. The official feature documentation establishes the building blocks, but does not prescribe a specific time-tracking formula or template.

Clockify: a timer on Notion pages

Clockify’s [Notion integration page] says its browser extension adds a timer to Notion pages and picks up the Notion issue name. Time entry management and reporting are handled in Clockify’s web service. This suits people who want timer controls alongside Notion tasks but prefer a dedicated service for reports and entry management.

TimeCamp: import tasks and optionally export time

TimeCamp’s [Notion integration help article] describes importing selected Notion databases, tracking tasks with TimeCamp’s apps or browser plugin, and optionally exporting tracked time to a Notion Number property. Its documentation says newly created Notion items are imported within one hour unless synchronization is forced sooner. Connecting requires permissions from the Notion account and a TimeCamp administrator.

Which approach should you choose?

  • Choose a Notion-only log if you want session records and calculated totals kept in Notion and are comfortable maintaining buttons, properties, and formulas.
  • Choose Clockify if a browser-extension timer on Notion pages and separate time reports fit your workflow.
  • Choose TimeCamp if importing selected Notion tasks and optionally writing tracked time to a Notion Number property are priorities, or you need its documented desktop and mobile tracking options.

The trade-off is where you want the timer, records, and reporting to live: in a manually maintained Notion database, in a dedicated tracker, or split between the tracker and Notion. Integration behavior and access requirements can change, so check each service’s current documentation and permissions before connecting an account.
