Asana tracks time natively on each task through two fields, Estimated time and Actual time. Actual time can be typed in or captured with a live timer, and subtask values roll up into the parent task. Whether your account has the feature depends on your plan. As of early October 2026, Asana’s feature page lists native tracking on Advanced, Enterprise, and Enterprise+, while its Help Center also names legacy Business and Legacy Enterprise. If you need billing, cost tracking, or a timer that works differently from Asana’s built-in one, the Timesheets and Budgets add-on, Everhour, and Harvest are the main options to compare.
How native time tracking is built
Asana’s time tracking lives inside the task, not in a separate stopwatch app. Each task can hold an estimate and an actual value, which means the data can be filtered, charted, and rolled up alongside the rest of the project. That design suits teams that already plan work in Asana and want duration information attached to the same record. It is less suited to someone who wants a standalone log of hours that is separate from task management.

Estimated time versus actual time
Estimated time is the planned duration for a task. Use it to plan expected effort before work starts. Actual time is the time that has been spent. Asana’s Help Center describes these as two separate fields, so an estimate is never overwritten by a logged entry, and the two can be compared on a task or in a report.

Manual entry and the live timer
Actual time can be entered manually or recorded with the start and stop timer. While the timer runs, it displays the task it is attached to. The task’s actual-time detail shows each timer instance and the person who logged it, which is useful when several people contribute to one task. Asana’s feature tutorial says time tracking is also available from My Tasks, so people working from their personal task list can log time without opening each project.

Set up time tracking in a project
- Open the project where you want to track time.
- Select Customize, then Fields, then Add, and choose Time your work. Asana adds the Estimated time and Actual time fields to the project.
- Open a task and enter an estimate in Estimated time to plan expected duration.
- When work happens, either type a value into Actual time or start the timer on the task. Stop the timer when you finish, and the elapsed time is recorded as actual time.
- Open the task’s actual-time detail to confirm that the timer instance or manual entry appears, and that the correct person is listed.
Asana’s Help Center article on how to track time in Asana walks through these steps and answers the common questions about timers and estimates.
Rollups, dashboards, and data export
Actual and estimated time from subtasks roll up to the parent task. When subtasks are expanded, the parent and each subtask show their own values. When they are collapsed, the parent displays the summed total. This matters for planning, because a parent task’s estimate can be the total of its subtasks without anyone re-entering the number.
Dashboards can chart time data, for example actual time grouped by section or by a custom field. Estimated time can also be sorted like any other custom field, which lets you order a list by planned effort. Asana says time-tracking information can be read through its API, so teams with development resources can pull the data into other systems.

Which plans include native time tracking
Asana’s descriptions of plan access do not match exactly, so use the table below as a checklist rather than a guarantee. The feature page is the more current product description; the Help Center article is the one that names legacy tiers. Where a source is silent, the table says so.
| Plan | Native time tracking (Asana feature page) | Named in Help Center time-tracking article | Timesheets and Budgets add-on eligibility |
|---|---|---|---|
| Starter | Not stated | Not stated | Listed |
| Advanced | Listed | Listed | Listed |
| Enterprise | Listed | Listed | Listed |
| Enterprise+ | Listed | Listed | Listed |
| Legacy Business | Not stated | Named | Not stated |
| Legacy Enterprise | Not stated | Named | Not stated |
The “Not stated” entries mean the cited Asana pages did not address that plan for that feature. They do not mean the plan is excluded. Confirm your organization’s entitlement in Asana’s current plan details or with your Asana administrator before a rollout, because packaging can change and an account’s contract may differ from the public listing. The feature page is at asana.com/features/resource-management/time-tracking.
The Timesheets and Budgets add-on
Timesheets and Budgets is a separate add-on, not part of the core time fields. Asana lists it for Starter, Advanced, Enterprise, and Enterprise+. Asana describes it as supporting actual-time tracking, cost forecasting and monitoring, billable revenue, and billing and invoicing workflows. It is the natural choice when native tracking records time but does not give you the financial view you need.

Asana also documents a migration path for historical time entries from Everhour into this add-on, as described in its Help Center. That confirms a supported move for existing Everhour data. It does not mean the add-on replicates every feature of Everhour, so compare the two against your own workflow before moving.
Eligibility and commercial terms are set by Asana’s account and contract, so ask Asana for the current terms for your account. The product details are in the Timesheets & Budgets add-on Help Center article.

- Time as a planning signal on tasks: native Estimated time and Actual time, plus subtask rollups, are enough. Confirm your plan first.
- Costs, budgets, and invoices from Asana data: evaluate the Timesheets and Budgets add-on, then compare it with Everhour’s budget and report features if you already run budgets outside Asana.
- A timer that lives in a browser extension: Harvest and Everhour both use an extension. Check whether your team can install extensions before choosing either.
- Client-facing invoicing for freelance or service work: Harvest’s invoicing connection is the documented fit; verify how it handles your billing cycle.
Before deciding, compare these items directly: plan eligibility and total cost; manual entry versus timer; project synchronization; report dimensions and exports; budget and billable-time support; extension requirements; data portability; and whether clients or guests need to see time. Current third-party pricing and Clockify’s Asana workflow are not established by the pages reviewed, so get those figures from each vendor before you commit.
For most teams that only need to know how long work takes, native tracking is the right starting point because it requires no extra app. Move to the add-on or a third-party tool when you need money, budgets, or invoices from the same data, and confirm your plan’s access first.
