SAP states that Employee Central is a prerequisite for SuccessFactors Time Tracking. SAP describes Time Tracking as public-cloud SaaS and explicitly says it is not part of the S/4HANA suite. Check those facts early: an organization seeking a time-entry screen in an existing ERP deployment may need an integration or another product rather than assuming it can activate an S/4HANA module. Does SAP SuccessFactors Time Tracking work with S/4HANA?
Yes, but distinguish an integration from product inclusion. SAP documents a consolidated time-recording pattern that uses the My Timesheet interface in S/4HANA Private Cloud Edition alongside SuccessFactors time processes. Its documented prerequisites include S/4HANA Private Cloud Edition release 2023 FPS1, S4HCM 101 SP6, My Timesheet version 4.0, workforce-person integration, and enabled SuccessFactors Time Tracking. Configuration matters as well: SAP says the first day of the week in the SuccessFactors time sheet must match the S/4HANA setting for consistent employee time periods in this consolidated scenario. Can I connect an employee time clock to SAP?
SAP documents Clock In Clock Out for time events from external services, including swipe machines or terminals. The events are sent into Clock In Clock Out, paired, and reflected on the SuccessFactors time sheet. That establishes an integration path for external clock events, but it does not establish that every retail punch clock is compatible or ready to connect. How does time data reach SAP payroll or another system?
SAP positions SuccessFactors Time Tracking as supporting automated payroll data flows. The actual path depends on the payroll system and implementation: establish whether time is handled natively, configured for replication, or requires custom integration rather than assuming every downstream system uses the same route.
SAP’s 1H 2026 documentation covers replication of Employee Central time data to SAP ERP HCM for SAP payroll. SAP cautions that this add-on is for integrating SAP cloud HR with SAP ERP applications; it is not licensed to connect non-SAP cloud HR products to SAP ERP HCM. For third-party payroll or other systems, ask the project team to map the source of approved time, the destination, the integration method, exception ownership, and reconciliation process. How to evaluate a time tracker for an SAP environment
Compare actual workflows and landscape requirements, not just a feature checklist. Use these questions to shape a vendor and implementation review:

- Confirm the architecture. Is Employee Central available? Is the target SuccessFactors public-cloud time tracking, S/4HANA Private Cloud Edition consolidated recording, ERP HCM, or a combination?
- Map time capture. Do employees enter time on web or mobile, use geofenced mobile punches, report project or order time, or use physical terminals? For each method, identify the exact integration path.
- Document work rules. List overtime, breaks, rest periods, rounding, shift premiums, rotating and cross-midnight schedules, local rules, union agreements, and attestation needs. Validate the proposed configuration against them.
- Trace payroll flow. Identify the payroll destination and determine what is native, configured, replicated, or custom. Define reconciliation and exception handling.
- Estimate administrative needs. Consider approval volume, bulk approvals, exception handling, alerts, reporting, analytics, and any schedule or cost-allocation requirements.
- Check implementation fit. Verify release and version prerequisites, regional suitability, partner applications, integration ownership, and ongoing support responsibilities.
What alternatives and extensions should SAP customers consider?
SAP lists SAP Workforce Forecasting and Scheduling by WorkForce Software and SAP Time and Attendance Management by WorkForce Software as solution extensions for additional forecasting, scheduling, and time-and-attendance capabilities.
