These official routes have eligibility or consent requirements; neither is a general-purpose license for scraping arbitrary TikTok pages.
Choose the right TikTok data route

The Research Tools program is aimed at qualifying academic and independent researchers working on a non-profit basis. TikTok says eligible researchers in the U.S., Europe, Canada, and Brazil can apply, with organizational and project criteria varying by region. A developer account alone does not grant Research API access. Review TikTok’s Research API eligibility and application criteria and the Research Tools overview before designing a collection project.

Applicants should be ready to describe a defined public-interest project, why the requested data is necessary, funding, ethics review, and data-security measures, and to agree to TikTok’s Research Tools terms. Access begins only after approval. The documented public-video scope is narrower than all TikTok content: the codebook describes public videos posted by public creators aged 18 or older. The Research API’s Query Videos endpoint is POST https://open.tiktokapis.com/v2/research/video/query/ and requires the research.data.basic scope. The request must specify which fields to return; the endpoint does not mean every documented field is automatically included. Consult the Query Videos API reference for current request syntax, filters, field availability, and response details.
Documented video fields include video ID and description, creation time, region code, username, duration, and share, view, like, comment, and favorite counts. Depending on availability, the reference also lists music, effects, playlist, voice-to-text, mentions, labels, and hashtag metadata.
Use hashtags as video fields, not as a guaranteed trend feed
Video records can include hashtag names and, where available, hashtag identifiers and descriptions. This can support finding or filtering eligible video records by hashtag. The documentation reviewed does not promise a comprehensive hashtag directory, exhaustive historical coverage, or a real-time hashtag trends feed. TikTok’s codebook describes the hashtag fields and their relationship to public-video records.
Design a query and store results carefully
- Get approved first. Confirm that your project qualifies, submit the application, and wait for access. Do not treat developer registration as Research API approval.
- Use the approved project credentials. Request only the documented scope and fields needed for the research question; keep credentials out of client-side code and public repositories.
- Choose filters and fields deliberately. Construct video queries around a defined research question. If the question concerns a hashtag, use the documented hashtag-related video fields and avoid claiming full platform-wide hashtag coverage.
- Handle result pagination and quotas. Follow the endpoint’s current pagination instructions and track requests and returned records against TikTok’s published limits.
- Preserve collection context. Store query criteria and collection timestamps alongside records so analysts can distinguish when a record was retrieved from when TikTok says the video or metric was created or updated.
How to get TikTok profile data
The Research API’s user-info endpoint documents display_name, bio_description, avatar_url, is_verified, follower_count, following_count, likes_count, video_count, and bio_url. It is a research endpoint subject to Research Tools approval and its applicable scope; it is not an unrestricted profile scraper. See the Query User Info API reference.

If you are building a product that displays a participating user’s profile and recent videos, TikTok documents the Display API as the relevant route. Its permissions include user.info.basic and video.list, which the user must authorize. Follow the Display API overview for the consent and integration flow. This supports authorized display for that user, not bulk collection of public profiles.
Plan for quotas and delayed data
TikTok’s Research API FAQ, last updated September 1, 2026, states a daily limit of 1,000 Research API requests and up to 100,000 records per day across APIs; follower and following list limits are separate. The same FAQ says video queries search an archived dataset: new videos may take up to 48 hours to appear, while video statistics and follower counts may take up to 10 days to update. These are published API limits and timing descriptions, not guarantees that a particular record will arrive by a deadline. Check the Research API FAQ for current limits before relying on them.
- Do not label query results or engagement counts as real-time.
- For longitudinal work, record query and retrieval dates and account for the documented update lag.
- Budget requests and records across the project rather than assuming each endpoint has an independent full allowance.
What automated scraping does—and does not—establish
TikTok’s documented APIs establish specific access paths for approved research and consent-based display. They do not settle whether a separate automated collection method is permitted, reliable, or lawful for every purpose. Before collecting or reusing data, assess the applicable TikTok terms, privacy requirements, and laws in the relevant jurisdictions; seek qualified legal advice for consequential projects. This guide is not a universal legal conclusion that scraping is either legal or illegal.
