HKUST published the first batch on 30 September 2026, based on a pass over the Pearl River Estuary and most parts of Hong Kong on 25 September. The images show geographic features; they are not yet validated measurements of local greenhouse-gas concentrations.
What the first images show
HKUST says the images depict Hong Kong’s landforms and geographic features, and reports a spatial resolution of approximately 100 metres. That resolution figure comes from the university’s announcement, not an independent performance assessment. The release was timed to the 77th anniversary of the founding of the People’s Republic of China; the South China Morning Post also reported the release on 30 September 2026.

The image pass took place on 25 September over the Pearl River Estuary and most parts of Hong Kong. By the time HKUST announced the images, MUSICO had been conducting scientific missions aboard Tiangong for more than three months and had completed system tests, calibration and on-orbit validation activities, according to the university.

What MUSICO is—and what its sensors measure
MUSICO stands for Multi-Spectral Imaging Carbon Observatory. It is a lightweight, high-resolution, high-precision synergistic observatory designed to detect carbon dioxide and methane emission point sources. Rather than a single conventional camera, it carries four optical sensors:

The first released images are geographic imagery. HKUST did not announce validated Hong Kong carbon-dioxide or methane concentrations alongside them.
Why a clear image is not yet an emissions finding
Imaging is an early step in the instrument’s scientific work. Turning observations into gas-concentration distributions requires processing, calibration, correction and retrieval analysis, followed by validation of the results. HKUST said those tasks were ongoing and that the team was working with national and international research institutions to validate its carbon-dioxide and methane retrieval products.

As project co-leader Prof. Zhai Chengxing, Associate Professor of HKUST’s Division of Emerging Interdisciplinary Areas, put it: “Obtaining images is only the first step. More importantly, we aim to derive quantitative information on greenhouse gas concentration distributions from the observations.” The release therefore marks an imaging and mission milestone, not a reported finding about Hong Kong’s emissions.
Tiangong’s orbit and the Hong Kong pass
HKUST describes Tiangong as orbiting approximately 400 kilometres above Earth, at an inclination of about 41.5 degrees. The station completes an orbit in about 90 minutes and travels at approximately 7.7 kilometres per second, according to the university’s 2026 announcement. These are mission-context figures reported by HKUST, rather than independent measurements presented in the image release.

Because Earth rotates beneath the station, its ground track shifts; Tiangong does not trace the same path over the same location every day. HKUST identifies 25 September 2026 as the pass that captured the released views of the Pearl River Estuary and most parts of Hong Kong.

The release shows that an HKUST-led payload aboard Tiangong captured and transmitted a first batch of images depicting Hong Kong’s geographic features. It also indicates that MUSICO had progressed through testing and calibration into routine scientific operations, as described by HKUST. The next meaningful scientific result would be validated gas-retrieval products; the 30 September announcement did not provide a quantified local concentration result.
