For gaming performance, OCuLink led Thunderbolt 5 in one reported RTX 5070 Ti comparison—but that result applies to the specific desktop hardware and 12-game test, not every eGPU setup. OCuLink is the stronger fit if your host already supports it and you are willing to use a more specialized connection. A Thunderbolt eGPU is usually the more convenient choice when you want a multipurpose connection and your computer supports Thunderbolt.
Thunderbolt 5 vs OCuLink: what the gaming test found
In a comparison reported by Tom’s Hardware, a Try Some Tech test used an Intel Core Ultra 7 265K desktop, an RTX 5070 Ti, a Thunderbolt 5 motherboard and a PELADN Link S-3 enclosure for the Thunderbolt configuration. Across 12 games, Thunderbolt 5 averaged roughly 13–14% lower performance than OCuLink. The reported gaps reached 20% in Spider-Man: Miles Morales and 23% in Red Dead Redemption 2.

Those are results from one tested configuration, not an expected penalty for every Thunderbolt eGPU, GPU, game or Thunderbolt generation. In the same report, Ghost of Tsushima reached 120 FPS in all configurations; the report treated that as a CPU ceiling, illustrating that a connection is not always the performance limit.
What the bandwidth figures do—and do not—mean
Intel’s 2023 Thunderbolt technology brief lists Thunderbolt 5 requirements of 80 or 120 Gbps overall, with 64 Gbps for PCIe data. For Thunderbolt 4, it lists 40 Gbps overall and 32 Gbps for PCIe data. These are interface specification figures; they do not translate directly into a game’s frame rate or predict the gap between two eGPU setups.

How the connections differ in practice
| Factor | Thunderbolt eGPU | OCuLink eGPU |
|---|---|---|
| Connection approach | Thunderbolt carries multiple protocols over USB-C. Intel lists 64 Gbps PCIe data requirements for Thunderbolt 5. Intel, 2023. | Described as a direct PCIe connection in the reported comparison. Tom’s Hardware. |
| Gaming evidence | Trailed OCuLink in the reported RTX 5070 Ti, 12-game test; this is a result for that setup. Tom’s Hardware. | Led Thunderbolt 5 in that same reported test. Tom’s Hardware. |
| Convenience and features | Intel documents external graphics as a Thunderbolt 5 use case. The host must support Thunderbolt, and the cable must be appropriate. Intel’s Thunderbolt 5 gaming guidance. | The reported comparison describes more limited availability and says OCuLink lacks consumer conveniences such as hot-swapping, power delivery, USB and video output. Tom’s Hardware. |
| Compatibility check | Check the exact computer model’s I/O specifications; a USB-C-shaped port does not by itself establish Thunderbolt support. Intel. | Confirm the host, dock or adapter and cable expose and support a compatible OCuLink/PCIe connection. Tom’s Hardware. |
Which connection should you choose?
Choose OCuLink when gaming performance is the priority
OCuLink is the performance-leaning option if your computer or handheld already exposes a compatible OCuLink/PCIe connection, and you accept a more specialized setup. The reported test gives a reason to favor it for that particular RTX 5070 Ti configuration, but it cannot establish how much faster OCuLink will be with a different host, GPU or game.
Choose Thunderbolt 5 for a more multipurpose setup
If your computer supports Thunderbolt 5 and you value a familiar USB-C connection for an external graphics enclosure and other accessories, Thunderbolt is the more convenient fit. Intel lists external graphics among Thunderbolt 5 use cases, but stresses that not every USB-C port is a Thunderbolt port. Verify the host specification and cable rather than relying on connector shape alone. Intel’s compatibility guidance explains what to check.

Compare the whole setup before buying
If neither connection is already available on your system, compare the cost and availability of the host, enclosure or dock, adapter, cable and GPU together. An interface advantage is of little use if the required host connection is missing or compatible hardware is impractical to source. Do not assume a generic USB-C dock or cable substitutes for OCuLink.

- Thunderbolt: Look up the exact computer model’s I/O specifications for Thunderbolt support; USB-C alone is not proof. Confirm the enclosure and cable explicitly support the host and intended GPU. Intel.
- OCuLink: Verify that the computer or handheld exposes a compatible OCuLink/PCIe path and that the dock or adapter and cable match it. Tom’s Hardware.
- Either setup: Check that the enclosure or dock has sufficient power and physical clearance for the graphics card, and consider how the display will connect. A benchmark comparison does not remove these system-level requirements.
What the comparison cannot establish
The available head-to-head evidence summarized here is a single reported test on a desktop platform, not a laptop test or a population-wide measure of eGPU performance. It supports a qualified conclusion about the tested RTX 5070 Ti setup, but not a universal percentage advantage for OCuLink or a ranking of every Thunderbolt generation. For a different system, use benchmarks for the same GPU, host and games when available.
