Thunderbolt 5 vs. Thunderbolt 4 Docks: What Changes for Speed, Displays, and Charging?

Thunderbolt 5 doubles baseline bandwidth and raises display and charging capabilities, but your computer and the dock’s own specifications determine what you can use.

A Thunderbolt 5 dock can offer twice the standard’s baseline bandwidth of Thunderbolt 4, higher display capability, and more available laptop-charging power. Those are standard-level limits, not guarantees about every dock: your computer, dock, cable, displays, and workload all affect what you can use. If your laptop has Thunderbolt 4, a Thunderbolt 5 dock will work but will run within the host’s Thunderbolt 4 capabilities.

Thunderbolt 5 vs. Thunderbolt 4 docks at a glance

Capability Thunderbolt 4 Thunderbolt 5 What to check on a dock
Bandwidth 40 Gbps minimum required bandwidth Up to 80 Gbps bidirectional; Bandwidth Boost can provide up to 120 Gbps transmit and 40 Gbps receive for high-volume video traffic The host generation, connected devices, and workload determine actual results. The 120 Gbps mode is asymmetric, not 120 Gbps in both directions. Intel’s Thunderbolt overview; Intel’s Thunderbolt 5 Technology Brief (2023).
Display capability Intel’s overview: up to dual 4K; technical brief: minimum PC video requirement of dual 4K Intel’s overview: up to dual 8K; technical brief: minimum PC video requirement of dual 6K Confirm supported display modes and outputs for the specific host and dock. Headline maximums are conditional on the complete setup, including compression where applicable. Intel’s Thunderbolt overview; Intel’s Thunderbolt 5 Technology Brief (2023).
Host charging Intel’s overview: up to 100 W; brief: required up to 100 W, available up to 140 W Intel’s overview: up to 240 W; brief: required up to 140 W, available up to 240 W Use the dock’s stated host-charging output, not the standard’s maximum, to determine whether it can charge your laptop. Intel’s Thunderbolt overview; Intel’s Thunderbolt 5 Technology Brief (2023).
Compatibility Thunderbolt 4 host and accessories A Thunderbolt 5 accessory can connect to a Thunderbolt 4 host, but runs at the host’s capabilities Check your computer’s port generation before paying for bandwidth it cannot use. Intel’s Thunderbolt overview.

What changes in speed?

Thunderbolt 4 requires 40 Gbps bandwidth, while Thunderbolt 5 supports up to 80 Gbps bidirectional, according to Intel’s current Thunderbolt overview. That can help when several high-throughput devices share a dock, such as fast external storage alongside demanding display traffic. It does not mean every connected device will transfer data twice as fast: the host, dock, peripheral, cable, and task all matter.

Thunderbolt 5’s Bandwidth Boost reallocates bandwidth for video-heavy use. Intel’s 2023 technology brief describes the mode as dedicating 120 Gbps to transmit traffic while providing 40 Gbps for receive traffic. In other words, 120 Gbps is a direction-specific allocation, not a symmetric connection speed.

How many displays can the docks support?

Intel’s overview describes Thunderbolt 4 as supporting up to dual 4K displays and Thunderbolt 5 as supporting up to dual 8K. Its technical brief lists minimum PC video requirements of dual 4K and dual 6K, respectively. These are different kinds of claims, not a promise that any dock or computer will drive two displays at the overview’s maximum resolution. The result depends on the complete configuration, including the host, dock outputs, displays, and compression where applicable.

Up to Triple 6K 60Hz displays are supported on M5 Pro & Max only. Up to Quad 6K 60Hz displays are supported on M5 Max only. Windows users please check your PC’s supported display compatibility.
  • 10 Gigabit Ethernet - 10GbE is 10X faster than traditional 1GbE found on the majority of docking stations. Connect to ultra fast 10GbE networks in order to transfer files faster than ever, or connect to 10GbE equipped NAS storage devices. *Ethernet is only supported on Thunderbolt based hosts as well as USB4 hosts that support PCIe.
  • Dual USB Controllers - A unique feature of the TS5 Plus is that it includes Dual USB Controllers. This means that the ports on the front of the dock have one 10Gb/s USB controller for all of the attached devices, and the rear ports have a second 10Gb/s controller for the devices on the back ports. This avoids any bottlenecks when multiple high speed USB devices are connected.
  • Check the dock manufacturer’s supported resolution and refresh-rate combinations, not just the number of video ports.
  • Check your computer’s supported external-display modes and how many displays it can drive through its Thunderbolt port.
  • Verify the display connections you need are present on the dock or supported through the specified adapters.

Does Thunderbolt 5 charge a laptop faster?

Thunderbolt 5 raises the standard-level charging figures, but the maximum available from the standard is not necessarily what a dock supplies. Intel’s overview lists up to 240 W for Thunderbolt 5 and up to 100 W for Thunderbolt 4. Intel’s 2023 brief makes a further distinction: required host-port charging is up to 140 W for Thunderbolt 5 and up to 100 W for Thunderbolt 4, while available maximums are up to 240 W and 140 W, respectively.

For a purchase, the relevant figure is the dock’s specified power output to the host computer. Check that figure against your laptop’s charging requirements; the Thunderbolt generation alone does not establish how much power a particular dock delivers.

Will a Thunderbolt 5 dock work with a Thunderbolt 4 laptop?

Yes. Intel says Thunderbolt 5 accessories can connect to Thunderbolt 4 hosts, but the host’s capabilities constrain performance. A Thunderbolt 4 computer does not gain Thunderbolt 5 bandwidth just because the dock supports the newer generation. Intel also notes that cable choice can limit bandwidth or features, and that Thunderbolt 5 cables are backward compatible with Thunderbolt 4 devices. How to choose between a Thunderbolt 4 and Thunderbolt 5 dock

  1. Identify your computer’s Thunderbolt generation. A Thunderbolt 5 host is needed to use the generation’s full bandwidth; a Thunderbolt 4 host limits a connected Thunderbolt 5 dock to Thunderbolt 4 capabilities. Intel’s Thunderbolt overview.
  2. Match the dock to your displays. Compare the exact resolution and refresh-rate support for your computer and intended screens with the dock’s documented outputs. Do not infer two 8K displays from a Thunderbolt 5 label alone.
  3. Compare host charging output with your laptop’s needs. Look for the dock’s laptop-facing power delivery specification rather than relying on Thunderbolt’s available maximum.
  4. Check the port inventory and cable. Port types and counts vary by model. Confirm the ports you need and that the cable supports the bandwidth and features required by your setup. Intel’s Thunderbolt overview.

Is a Thunderbolt 5 dock worth it over Thunderbolt 4?

Choose based on the host and the setup you need, not the generation number alone. A Thunderbolt 4 dock can be a sensible fit when its bandwidth, display support, and host-charging output meet your needs. A Thunderbolt 5 dock is more relevant if you have—or expect to use—a Thunderbolt 5 computer and need its higher bandwidth or display capabilities. If you are buying for a Thunderbolt 4 laptop, do not expect the newer dock to unlock Thunderbolt 5 performance; compare the specific docks’ display, power, and port specifications instead. These are standard-level comparisons, not independent performance tests or recommendations for a particular dock model.
