1. Read Thumbalizr’s status and error headers
Thumbalizr documents three values for X-Thumbalizr-Status: QUEUED, OK, and FAILED. Its API documentation describes X-Thumbalizr-Error as the reason the screenshot failed. Check these before changing settings or retrying. Thumbalizr API Documentation.

QUEUED: The job is still processing. Wait and check the job or response again rather than treating it as a completed capture.FAILED: Save the error text. It can distinguish a request or service failure from a capture that returned unexpected page content.OK, with a challenge in the image: The capture succeeded technically, but the rendered content is a Cloudflare challenge or other unexpected response. A successful capture status does not mean the intended page was accessible.
Record the target URL, timestamp, status and error headers, and a copy of the resulting image if available. Those details are more useful for support than a report that the screenshot “didn’t work.”

2. Check the URL and requested settings
Thumbalizr specifically calls out correct parameter encoding, especially for the url parameter. Check that the complete target URL—including its query string and any special characters—is encoded correctly in the request. Compare the submitted URL with the address you intended to capture; malformed encoding can change the destination or make the request fail. Thumbalizr API Documentation.

Thumbalizr lists controls for browser width and height, screenshot size, delay, and browser country. Availability depends on account tier, so confirm that the settings you request are supported by your account rather than assuming every option is available on every tier. Thumbalizr features.
- Temporarily remove optional settings and try a basic capture of the correctly encoded URL.
- If the basic capture works, add settings back one at a time to identify whether an unsupported or unsuitable option is involved.
- If you use a delay, remember that it changes when the capture occurs; it does not itself grant access through a Cloudflare challenge.
3. Compare what the capture shows with a normal visit
Open the same URL in an ordinary browser and note whether it displays the expected page, a Cloudflare challenge, an access denial, or different content. Compare the full URL and, where relevant, the region from which the page is being accessed. This comparison is diagnostic, not proof of Thumbalizr’s request identity: an automated capture may receive a different response from a normal visit, but the available documentation does not establish exactly how Cloudflare treats Thumbalizr.

Region is one possible variable because Thumbalizr documents a browser-country option, with choices subject to account tier. If page content or access varies by location, compare only settings available to your account and document which one produced each result. Thumbalizr features.
4. If you administer the protected site, use its Cloudflare event details
When you control the domain, inspect Cloudflare’s security events and the rule that challenged or blocked the request at the capture timestamp. Use the event details to decide whether a rule is behaving as intended and what, if anything, can safely be adjusted. Do not broadly weaken bot protection based only on a failed screenshot.

Cloudflare publishes instructions for allowlisting its own Browser Run. Those instructions are specific to Browser Run; its identifiers and rules should not be assumed to apply to Thumbalizr. 5. Don’t use a user-agent change as a presumed bypass
Cloudflare’s Browser Run screenshot documentation says, “The userAgent parameter does not bypass bot protection.” That statement describes Cloudflare Browser Run, not Thumbalizr, and does not establish which identity Cloudflare assigns to a Thumbalizr request. It is a reason not to assume that changing a user-agent will solve a challenge; use the captured response and site-side security events to diagnose the particular case. 6. Account for Thumbalizr’s announced backend transition
On April 8, 2026, Thumbalizr announced a phased transition of its screenshot backend from Browshot infrastructure to ScreenshotCenter, beginning with newly created accounts and then moving existing accounts in batches. The announcement said thumbnails, settings, and API usage would continue to work; it did not attribute Cloudflare capture failures to the migration. If the problem began during a transition, include your account age and incident timestamps when contacting support rather than treating the transition as a confirmed cause. Thumbalizr blog.
