1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe quiet third robot gets the package in the story: it authenticates, then presents a signed cargo statement tied to the same key used in that conversation. The bakery’s separate order and handoff checks pass, too. The software example illustrates how to match a claim to an authenticated endpoint; it does not open a hatch or decide who is authorized to receive a delivery.
Why the third robot gets the package
The bakery faces three machines arriving for the same order. Their appearance is not enough to tell which claims belong to which robot: a certificate photo or a dent cannot establish who is on the other end of a connection. Each robot must authenticate in its own conversation, and the bakery must check that any signed statement names the key authenticated in that conversation.

Robot one: authenticated, but no cargo statement
Robot one authenticates successfully but provides no cargo statement. Authentication alone does not supply the cargo information the bakery needs for this example.
Robot two: a valid signature, attached to the wrong subject
Robot two authenticates and presents a genuinely signed statement, but that statement names robot three’s credential. A valid signature does not make the statement belong to the endpoint that presented it. The bakery rejects the mismatch.

Robot three: matching endpoint and statement
Robot three authenticates and presents a statement bound to its own key. The fictional statement describes a dry-food compartment, a nominal payload of 12 kilograms, and a cargo volume of 42 liters. These are sample fixture values, not measured capacities or recommendations. The story also says the bakery’s separate assignment, sensor, and handoff checks pass; those checks, not the identity exchange alone, lead to the quiet robot receiving the package. Read the original story and example.
What the software example demonstrates
The author describes a Robot Identity Protocol (RIP) experiment using SDK version 0.2.0-alpha.2. It runs three separate sessions in one Node.js process, with synthetic issuers and locally provisioned issuer trust. All three endpoints authenticate; only one supplies a cargo statement whose subject matches its authenticated key. The exchange is built on EDHOC, according to the article.

The demonstrated scope is local endpoint authentication and optional authenticated information. A domain can define its own statement schema and validator. The example does not include a radio, camera, order backend, physical robot, door, or mechanism that binds a digital credential to a particular physical machine. Its story outcome should not be mistaken for a demonstrated package-delivery or robot-safety system.

What authentication and signatures do—and do not—prove
A signature can establish that a trusted issuer signed particular information and that the signed content has not been altered. It does not establish that the issuer’s claim is sensible, physically true, or still current. The article notes that generic signature verification accepts a negative payload capacity; an application-level validator must reject values that violate its domain rules.

- Physical identity: Authenticating a key does not, by itself, prove which physical robot holds it.
- Truth: A signature proves an issuer made an assertion, not that the assertion accurately describes the robot.
- Freshness: A nominal payload rating does not say how much capacity remains today. An unexpired credential is not a fresh load measurement.
- Authorization and safety: RIP’s demonstrated exchange does not decide whether a robot may take an order or control a hatch. Those decisions belong to separate application and safety systems.
Privacy and security limits to consider
The article characterizes RIP as experimental alpha software, without independent interoperability or security certification. It does not establish suitability for production or safety-critical use, nor does it claim RIP replaces established V2X credential systems.
- Linkability: RIP exposes the authenticated key identifier to its counterpart. Reusing a key can therefore make separate visits linkable.
- Confidentiality: Optional statements are signed, not encrypted. A signature protects integrity and attribution; it does not conceal the statement. Confidential transfer requires a protected application channel.
- Credential lifecycle: The SDK does not implement credential lifecycle management or cryptographic selective disclosure.
- Separate cross-domain experiment: The article describes another experiment whose wrapper exchange is local-test-only and does not yet provide encrypted or authenticated application transport. That is distinct from the bakery fixture.
What to look for in an identity design
The bakery scenario is useful as a set of design questions, not as a performance comparison. When evaluating a system that exchanges machine credentials, check whether it:

- distinguishes authenticating an endpoint from proving a physical machine’s identity;
- scopes issuer trust to the statement types an application expects;
- checks that a statement’s subject matches the key authenticated in the current session;
- validates claims for plausibility and freshness instead of treating a valid signature as sufficient;
- accounts for whether durable identifiers make encounters linkable;
- uses encryption when exchanged information must remain confidential; and
- keeps application authorization, physical handoff, and safety control outside the identity protocol unless those functions are explicitly implemented and validated.
The story ends with a broader question: what is the smallest fact a stranger’s machine needs to prove to yours—and what should it never learn? The answer depends on the application, but the bakery example makes one boundary clear: a signed identity claim can help associate information with a conversation; it cannot replace the checks that determine whether a real-world action is safe or authorized.
