Three Class 9 students drowned at Rushikonda beach in Visakhapatnam on Friday, October 2, 2026, during the Gandhi Jayanti school holiday. Hindustan Times reported that a sudden wave and current swept them from reportedly knee-deep water into deeper water. A fourth boy who entered the sea reached shore.
What happened at Rushikonda beach?
Hindustan Times reported that six boys, all around 14 and residents of Madhurawada, went to the beach at about 3 p.m. on Friday. The report places the incident near IT Park Junction on Bheemili beach road, close to Rushikonda.

According to the police account quoted by the newspaper, four boys entered the water while two remained on shore. Police said the four were reportedly standing in knee-deep water when a large wave struck. One boy made it back to shore; the other three were swept into deeper water by the current.

The report identified the deceased as Pilla Prashanth, Sattaruvu Suryaprakash and Sabbavarapu Ritesh. These names and details are attributed to Hindustan Times’ account.

How were the students found?
A multi-agency search involved Coast Guard personnel, including a helicopter, Marine Police, Pothinamallayyapalem police, lifeguards and local fishermen. Prashanth’s body was recovered on Friday evening. The other two students’ bodies were found on the beach early Saturday morning. Hindustan Times reported that City Police Commissioner Shankhabrata Bagchi monitored the operation.
What did officials say would happen next?
The report said the state government ordered an inquiry and intended to issue safety and supervision guidelines for schools and coaching institutes conducting study tours. As of the October 3 report, no release date or final guideline contents had been specified. The reported plans do not establish the inquiry’s findings or assign responsibility for the incident.

Why can knee-deep water at a beach still be dangerous?
The police account in this incident describes a wave and current carrying boys from shallow water into deeper water. A beach’s appearance or a person’s position in shallow water does not, by itself, establish that conditions are safe. The report does not provide further detail about the sea conditions or identify a specific safety warning in effect at Rushikonda that day.
