Three-Centre Single-Electron Bond Found Inside a Fullerene Cage

A dysprosium carbide cluster inside a C₈₀ fullerene has an unusual bonding motif identified through computational analysis, alongside a crystal structure determined by X-ray diffraction.

Researchers identified a rare three-centre, single-electron metal–metal bonding motif in a dysprosium carbide cluster enclosed within a fullerene molecule. The crystal structure shows how the atoms are arranged; the bond itself is an electronic-structure interpretation supported by computational analysis.

What molecule did the researchers study?

Fei Jin and colleagues synthesized and isolated Dy₃C₂@Ih(7)-C₈₀: a cluster containing three dysprosium atoms and two carbon atoms inside a C₈₀ fullerene cage. The notation “@” indicates that the cluster is enclosed by the carbon cage.

The preparation, as described by Chemistry World, used arc discharge of graphite and dysprosium oxide (Dy₂O₃). The researchers then isolated the fullerene by high-performance liquid chromatography and co-crystallized it with a corannulene-based host to obtain crystals for analysis.

What did the crystal structure show?

Single-crystal X-ray diffraction (SC-XRD) established the arrangement of the atoms in the encapsulated cluster. Jin et al. describe the shape as a “bat ray” configuration: the two-carbon unit sits above a triangular arrangement of three dysprosium atoms. The authors report that the C₂ unit is approximately 1.66 Å above the plane of the three Dy atoms, with Dy–Dy separations of approximately 3.4 Å. These measurements refer to this molecule, not to fullerenes generally.

Diffraction determines the molecular structure from the crystal. It does not directly photograph or image an electron bond between the dysprosium atoms.

How did the authors identify the three-centre bond?

To interpret the molecule’s electronic structure, the researchers used density functional theory (DFT). They describe its formal charge distribution as (Dy₃)⁸⁺(C₂)²⁻@C₈₀⁶⁻ and identify a singly occupied molecular orbital with bonding character spread across all three Dy atoms. From that analysis, they assign a three-centre, single-electron Dy–Dy–Dy bond.

  • Easy to Understand: This molecular model is extremely helpful for both teachers and students. It sparks kids' interest in chemistry by turning invisible molecular and atomic shapes into something tangible. This makes it easier for children to grasp molecular geometry and serves as a fantastic hands-on learning tool!
  • Great for Teaching Science at All Levels: With 240 pieces, including 86 atoms and 154 bonds, this kit caters to students from 7th grade up to the graduate level.
  • Made from Safe Materials: All models are constructed from food - grade, eco - friendly plastics, including new PP plastic for atom balls, LDPE plastic for link bonds, and ABS plastic for the box.
  • 3D Chemical Teaching Molecular Model: It can display chemical structures, molecular bonds, and bond angles in various directions. Use it to demonstrate basic molecular geometry, chemical structures, and stereochemistry through 3D modeling.
  • Two Types of Chemical Structure Models: The ball - and - stick model uses balls for atoms and sticks for bonds. In the space - filling model, balls are proportionally sized and positioned close to each other, mimicking how atoms are arranged in real molecules.

The distinction matters: SC-XRD provides the observed atomic arrangement, while the bonding assignment rests on the computational analysis of the electronic structure. Jin et al. reported this as the first such three-centre single-electron metal–metal bonding motif in molecular lanthanide chemistry.

Cluster Formal charge distribution reported by the authors Metal–metal bonding interpretation
Dy₃C₂@Ih(7)-C₈₀ (Dy₃)⁸⁺(C₂)²⁻@C₈₀⁶⁻ A singly occupied orbital with Dy–Dy–Dy bonding character; assigned as a three-centre single-electron bond.
Sc₃C₂@Ih(7)-C₈₀ (Sc₃)⁹⁺(C₂)³⁻@C₈₀⁶⁻ The authors report no metal–metal bonding in this case.

This is a comparison between the two compounds examined in the study, not a general rule about all dysprosium, scandium, or fullerene clusters.

What role did electrochemistry play?

The authors report that electrochemical changes to the population of the Dy–Dy–Dy-bonding orbital can produce ionic forms in which the Dy–Dy bonds are strengthened or weakened. This describes how the calculated bonding motif responds in this specific molecular system; it does not demonstrate a device, material application, or consumer product.
