Bluesky lets you subscribe to different feeds built with different algorithms, while Threads combines custom feeds with Dear Algo, a public request that Meta says changes recommendations for three days. Neither approach amounts to complete control over everything the apps rank or show, and the best fit depends on whether you want to pick a feed or ask one to shift its recommendations.
What “control over your feed” means
Feed control is not a single setting. It can mean choosing posts from accounts you follow instead of recommendations, selecting an alternative algorithmic feed, asking the app to show more or less of a subject, or filtering unwanted accounts and replies. Those controls affect different parts of the experience: a feed selector changes which stream you view, while moderation and reply tools limit specific content or interactions.

For a practical comparison, the key questions are: Where do recommended posts come from? Can you switch to another feed algorithm? Can you directly request a change to recommendations, and how long does it last? What separate tools are available for muting, hidden words, moderation labels, or replies?

It also helps to separate choice from transparency. Subscribing to a feed gives you another stream to use, but it does not necessarily explain every decision that feed’s algorithm makes. Likewise, a request for more or less of a subject describes an outcome you want, not the full mechanics of how recommendations are ranked. Both services document ways to shape the experience; neither set of sources establishes complete control over every ranking decision.
How the two feed systems differ
Threads mixes followed accounts and recommendations
When Meta introduced Threads in July 2023, it described a feed containing posts from people a user follows alongside recommended posts, including posts from creators they had not discovered. That launch description is useful context for why feed steering matters: the home experience was not described as a stream limited to followed accounts. Meta’s later announcements added custom feeds and controls for tailoring parts of the experience. Meta’s Threads launch announcement also described hidden words for filtering replies.
This distinction matters when deciding what kind of control you need. If your aim is to browse a stream based on selected accounts or a topic, a custom feed may be the relevant option. If you want the recommendation mix itself to shift toward or away from a subject, Dear Algo is the more direct tool Meta describes. Those are different actions, and neither should be confused with the controls for filtering replies.
Bluesky offers a chronological Following feed and other feeds
Bluesky describes a chronological Following feed as well as Discover and other algorithmic feeds. Its 2023 explanation of Discover said that it combined trending content from the network with followed accounts and accounts near a person’s social graph. That is a dated description of the design, not a full account of the current ranking formula. The later welcome article, published in September 2024, again described Following and Discover and emphasized that users can choose among feeds. Bluesky’s 2023 custom-feeds article and its September 2024 welcome article explain those distinctions.
The difference between Following and Discover is useful as a starting point: Following is chronological and centers on accounts you follow, while Discover is an algorithmic discovery view. If you want something other than those general options, Bluesky’s custom-feed model lets you find and subscribe to other feeds. The 2023 description of Discover should remain dated, however; it should not be used to claim that the current version follows exactly the same ranking formula.
Bluesky’s user FAQ describes custom feeds as a way to choose the algorithm powering part of the social-media experience. A person can find feeds in the app and subscribe to ones they want to use. This makes feed selection a central control: instead of relying only on one general recommendation stream, a user can add streams organized around different algorithms or interests. Bluesky’s user FAQ outlines feed discovery and subscription.
What you can customize on Threads
Find, share, pin, and open custom feeds
Meta’s February 2025 announcement said people can share custom feeds, explore public feeds from profiles, and pin favorite feeds to the home screen. In a March 2025 announcement, Meta added that users can select a custom feed as the default when opening Threads. These features make it possible to organize feed views around selected profiles or topics and to make a preferred view easier to reach. Meta’s custom-feeds announcement covers sharing, discovery, and pinning; its March 2025 personalization announcement describes the default-feed option and additional controls.

A custom feed is useful when you want a distinct stream rather than a one-off adjustment to recommendations. You can keep a preferred feed close at hand, and setting one as the default changes which feed opens first. It does not mean that every ranking decision inside that feed is personally configured by you: the feed’s algorithm still determines how it selects or orders posts.
Meta also described custom-feed ordering and columns for the Threads web experience in April 2025. That adds another way to arrange feed views on the web, but it is a presentation and organization option, not evidence that users control the underlying ranking logic. Feature details can evolve, so check the current app or web experience for what is available to you. Meta’s Threads web announcement covers those web features.
Use Dear Algo for a three-day recommendation adjustment
Meta announced Dear Algo in February 2026 as a way to request more or less of a subject in recommendations. The stated interaction is a public Threads post beginning with “Dear Algo,” followed by what the user wants to see more or less of. Meta says the resulting adjustment lasts three days. It is therefore a temporary steering request, not a permanent preference setting. Meta’s Dear Algo announcement describes the feature and its duration.
The public nature of the request is an important practical distinction. Unlike quietly selecting a setting, the method Meta describes involves publishing a post. Consider whether you are comfortable making that request publicly before using it. The announcement describes feature behavior, but access and rollout can vary; check whether Dear Algo is available in your region and app before relying on it. The published three-day duration should not be interpreted as a lasting change to your feed preferences.
Recommended Free Tools
That duration is also a useful limit when comparing the two services. A custom feed is a separate view you can return to, while Meta describes Dear Algo as a temporary adjustment to recommendations. If you are trying to solve a recurring issue, a three-day request may not provide the same kind of ongoing choice as keeping a feed selected or pinned. Meta’s announcement states the duration, but does not say how a particular request will affect an individual account’s feed.
Separate feed tools from reply controls
Threads also has controls aimed at conversations rather than the recommendation algorithm. Meta has described reply approvals, reply filters, and ways to manage who can engage, as well as hidden words for filtering replies. These options can reduce unwanted interactions or terms in replies, but they are not switches that turn the home feed into a chronological feed or let a user choose its complete ranking logic. The relevant controls are described in Meta’s March 2025 feature announcement and 2023 launch announcement.
What you can customize on Bluesky
Choose among feeds rather than relying on one algorithm
Bluesky’s approach is to let people select feeds that use different algorithms. Its team described this as an “open marketplace of feeds” in a July 2023 post, contrasting that model with a single opaque ranking algorithm. That wording is Bluesky’s own description of its design goal, not an independent finding about transparency or how well any individual feed works. The practical point is that users can add feeds they want and remove ones they do not. The 2023 article on algorithmic choice explains the approach.

Bluesky’s official 2024 welcome article similarly says that rather than providing only a single algorithm, the service lets users choose. The combination of Following, Discover, and other subscribed feeds gives people distinct ways to browse: a chronological view centered on followed accounts, a general discovery option, or feeds created around other subjects and selection rules. The older 2023 explanation of Discover should not be treated as a complete description of its current ranking formula.
In practice, this model asks users to make a selection among available feeds rather than issue a single direct instruction to a general recommendation system. That can be a strength if you want different browsing streams for different purposes. It can also mean you need to look for a feed that suits your interests and decide whether to keep it. Bluesky’s official sources describe discovery and subscription, but do not establish how easy it is for every user to find the right feed.
Understand what the feed count does—and does not—tell you
Bluesky’s company FAQ reports more than 40,000 algorithmic feeds, with the figure stated as of May 2026. This is a Bluesky-published count, not an independently audited total, and it says nothing by itself about the quality, activity, safety, or usefulness of those feeds. The official sources consulted do not provide a comparable Threads feed-count statistic. Bluesky’s company FAQ explains its feed and moderation model and gives the platform’s reported count.
A large catalog expands the number of possible choices, but finding a suitable feed still takes judgment. A feed can be useful for a specific topic or community and still omit posts you care about. Treat subscriptions as choices you can revise, rather than assuming that a high feed count guarantees a better personal experience. The figure is evidence of the scale Bluesky reports for its catalog, not a score for feed quality or a direct measure of user control.
Distinguish current features from roadmap plans
Bluesky’s January 2026 roadmap says custom feeds power trending topics and discusses plans to make feeds more central, describing that work as experimental. A roadmap is not a promise that a planned interface or feature is already generally available. For the present-day comparison, rely on the described Following, Discover, and custom-feed options; treat the roadmap as a statement of areas Bluesky was exploring, not as a feature checklist. Bluesky’s January 2026 roadmap sets out that distinction.
Moderation and filtering are a separate kind of control
Choosing a feed determines which stream or algorithm you view; moderation tools determine which accounts, content, or interactions are filtered or restricted. They can make the experience more manageable without making the feed algorithm fully user-authored.
- On Bluesky: its FAQ describes moderation as a combination of automated filtering, administrative actions, and community labeling. Its user FAQ says muting prevents notifications and top-level posts from a muted account from appearing to you, while blocking prevents interactions between accounts. Bluesky also describes stackable moderation services. These actions and services address unwanted accounts or content, not the overall feed-ranking formula. See the company FAQ and user FAQ.
- On Threads: Meta describes hidden words and reply controls, including filters and options for managing who can engage. These can shape replies and interactions without replacing the recommendation feed or choosing a chronological stream. See Meta’s launch announcement and personalization announcement.
These distinctions can help diagnose the actual problem. If unwanted posts from one account are the issue, muting or blocking is more targeted than switching to a different general feed. If the issue is offensive or unwanted replies, reply filters or hidden words may be more relevant. Community labels and other moderation tools concern how content is labeled or filtered; they are not substitutes for choosing a feed algorithm. If the problem is the overall mix of recommended posts, feed selection and recommendation steering are the more relevant controls.

Bluesky’s FAQ describes moderation as involving automated filtering, manual administrative actions, and community labeling. That is a layered moderation approach, separate from the catalog of algorithms people can choose to view. Its user FAQ makes a further distinction between muting and blocking: muting affects notifications and top-level posts from an account, while blocking prevents interactions between accounts. Those specific effects matter when choosing a tool, since muting is not described as a universal block on interaction.

| Direct request to change recommendations | Dear Algo lets a user publicly request more or less of a subject; Meta says the adjustment lasts three days. | No equivalent direct, time-limited recommendation request is established by the cited official sources. |
| Reported custom-feed count | No comparable official count is stated in the cited sources. | Bluesky’s FAQ reports more than 40,000 algorithmic feeds as of May 2026; this is a platform-reported figure. |

Choose Bluesky if your priority is selecting among different feed algorithms and keeping distinct streams available. Choose Threads if you want custom feeds plus the option, where available, to make a direct but temporary request about recommendation topics. These are differences in the controls documented by each platform, not proof that one app will show you more relevant posts or give you greater overall satisfaction.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →There is no comparable official statistic in the cited sources that would turn this into a numerical contest. Bluesky reports more than 40,000 algorithmic feeds, but that count is not independently audited, and Meta has not provided a matching feed-count figure in the cited material. The cited material does not establish an independent usability study or a direct comparative measure of how much control people experience on either app. The fairest verdict is therefore about the type of control available, not a universal score.
A simple way to decide
- Identify what is wrong with your current feed. If you want a stream centered on accounts you follow, look for a Following-style feed. If recommendations are the issue, focus on the app’s recommendation controls. If replies are the problem, inspect moderation and reply settings instead.
- Decide whether you want a feed choice or a recommendation request. Bluesky’s model is oriented around subscribing to different algorithmic feeds. Threads provides custom feeds and Dear Algo’s short-lived topic request.
- Consider how you want to make adjustments. A custom feed can be kept as a distinct view, while Dear Algo, as Meta describes it, requires a public post and lasts three days. Pick the style that suits your privacy and browsing habits.
- Check what is actually available to you. Features can roll out or vary by region. Confirm the relevant controls in your app rather than assuming an announcement guarantees access everywhere.
- Use filtering tools for account or conversation problems. Muting, blocking, hidden words, and reply filters solve narrower problems than changing the feed algorithm; use the control that matches the unwanted content.
For a quick test, name the specific change you want before choosing a control: “show me a different stream,” “show me more or less of this topic,” or “keep this account or kind of reply out of view.” The first points toward feed selection, the second toward recommendation steering such as Meta’s Dear Algo where available, and the third toward account or content moderation tools. This is a way to match the documented tools to your need, not a guarantee that either platform will produce an exact result.
What the evidence can establish
The official product descriptions establish a meaningful difference in control style, but they do not establish a universal winner for feed quality. Bluesky’s published sources describe feed choice as a design principle and report a feed count; Meta’s sources describe Threads custom feeds and Dear Algo’s three-day behavior. Those are company-authored feature descriptions. The cited material does not provide an independent comparative statistic measuring how much control people have, nor a direct usability study showing which interface is easier or more effective.
That distinction matters because availability of a control is not the same as its effect on a particular person’s feed. A choice among feeds may provide more ways to browse, while a temporary request may be easier for someone who wants a quick topic adjustment. The appropriate verdict is therefore specific: Bluesky offers more choice among feed algorithms; Threads offers a more direct temporary request mechanism for steering recommendations.
Feature interfaces and rollout can change, and availability may vary by region. The newest feature in the cited Threads material is Dear Algo, announced in February 2026; verify that it is accessible before relying on it. Bluesky’s reported feed count may also change over time. Dates matter here: the 2023 Discover description is historical context, the January 2026 Bluesky roadmap discusses experimental plans, and Meta’s Dear Algo announcement describes the three-day request behavior it published in February 2026.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which app gives you more control over your feed?
It depends on what you mean by control. Bluesky offers more choice among feed algorithms, including Following, Discover, and feeds users can find and subscribe to. Threads combines custom feeds with Dear Algo, which Meta says lets people publicly request more or less of a subject in recommendations for three days.
Can I make Threads open to a custom feed?
Meta’s March 2025 announcement says users can select a custom feed as the default when opening Threads. Meta also says custom feeds can be shared, found, and pinned. Availability and interface details can change, so check your current app.
How long does Threads Dear Algo last, and is the request private?
Meta says a Dear Algo adjustment lasts three days. The described method is a public Threads post beginning with “Dear Algo,” so it is not a silent private setting change. Check availability in your region before relying on the feature.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed

How many custom feeds does Bluesky have?
Bluesky’s FAQ reports more than 40,000 algorithmic feeds as of May 2026. That is Bluesky’s own reported figure, not an independently audited count or a measure of feed quality. The cited official sources do not give a comparable Threads count.
Do muting, blocking, hidden words, or reply filters change the feed algorithm?
They are separate from feed selection. Bluesky says muting prevents notifications and top-level posts from a muted account from appearing to you, while blocking prevents interactions between accounts. Threads describes hidden words and reply-management controls. These tools address accounts, content, or interactions; they do not by themselves select a different feed algorithm.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: Bluesky is the stronger fit if you want to choose among different algorithmic feeds. Threads may suit you better if you want custom feeds and a direct, temporary way to request a change to recommendation topics. Dear Algo is a public request that Meta says lasts three days, while Bluesky’s reported catalog of more than 40,000 feeds is a platform figure, not an independent quality measure. Neither app’s documented controls guarantee complete control over ranking or a better feed for every person.
