A TikTok creator says an Ancestry DNA match led her family to a woman they believe was her grandmother’s daughter, born before the grandmother married and placed for adoption. The Daily Dot reported Brielle’s account on September 30, 2026, but said it could not independently verify the family history.
What Brielle says her family discovered
In a “get ready with me” TikTok, Brielle (@briellehardman) recounted that her grandfather was asked on his deathbed whether he had hidden anything. According to her, he said he had not, “but I don’t know about your mother.” The family apparently did not follow up on the remark at the time.
Years later, Brielle says, an aunt took an Ancestry DNA test and received a match that she thought might be a sister to her and Brielle’s mother. The relatives first wondered whether the grandfather had fathered another child. They eventually concluded, Brielle said, that the woman was the grandmother’s child from before her marriage.
Brielle’s account is that her grandmother became pregnant while in high school, gave birth, and placed the child for adoption. The woman reportedly learned she had been adopted at age 45. The Daily Dot’s report is based on Brielle’s TikTok retelling and explicitly says the outlet could not independently verify the pregnancy, adoption, ages, or family’s conclusions. The account does not establish what the grandfather knew or why the grandmother kept the matter private.

The video’s caption read, “Grwm|| The family secret my grandma took to her grave”. The Daily Dot reported that it had more than 1.2 million views and 370 comments when the outlet published its story; those engagement figures may have changed since then. The Daily Dot’s report is the source for the family account and those figures.
What an Ancestry match can—and cannot—show
Ancestry says it compares DNA profiles in its database and estimates how closely two people may be related. The company’s matching documentation says match lists are based on DNA, not on family-tree information. A match can point relatives toward a possible connection, but it does not by itself confirm a person’s identity, the exact relationship, or the history behind it.

Family trees, shared matches, and messages can help people investigate a lead. Ancestry’s help pages note that some shared-match and family-tree analysis features require a family-history membership, so feature access can depend on membership and may change. DNA matching is optional, with privacy controls
Ancestry says users can opt in to appearing in DNA matches, control what matches can see, set different access levels for collaborators, and delete DNA test results. What a DNA test kit offers
Ancestry describes its DNA test kit as providing an origins report and connections to genetic relatives. A kit may provide clues for family-history research, but there is no guarantee it will reveal a close relative, and a match alone does not prove a specific relationship.
