The Multi-Purpose Habitation (MPH) is a real, government-backed lunar habitat programme—not a finished moon base. Thales Alenia Space is developing it for the Italian Space Agency (ASI) as part of cooperation with NASA’s Artemis programme. ASI describes the MPH as a first habitable surface module and a building block for operations near the lunar south pole.
What the Multi-Purpose Habitation is supposed to do
MPH is planned as a pressurized surface habitat where astronauts can live and work on the Moon. Its mission is broader than providing a room with beds: the module is intended to combine crew accommodation, science, logistics, resource handling and surface mobility in one architecture.
ASI’s industry-day description presents it as an early building block for a sustained human presence near the south pole. That makes MPH part of a larger lunar infrastructure plan rather than a standalone settlement.
Where the programme stands
The project is still in design and review. A NASA board completed its review on 19 May 2026 and cleared the programme to proceed toward a Preliminary Design Review (PDR) expected in 2027. Passing that review gate would allow the design to mature; it does not mean flight hardware is complete.

| Date | Milestone | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 23 November 2023 | Thales Alenia Space announced that lunar MPH activities were officially underway. | Programme and industrial work had begun. |
| 25 July 2025 | Thales announced a two-year preliminary-design contract. | The contract includes critical enabling technologies and identifies a planned 2033 launch from NASA’s Kennedy Space Center. |
| 19 May 2026 | NASA board review completed. | The project was cleared to continue toward PDR. |
| 2027 | Preliminary Design Review expected. | A major design-maturity checkpoint, not a launch approval. |
| 2033 | Planned launch target. | A stated programme target, not a guaranteed date. |
The 2025 contract release also gives the module a nominal operational life of 10 years. “Nominal” describes the planned design life; actual service would depend on the final configuration, launch readiness and lunar operating conditions.
What “multi-purpose” means on the Moon
Living and working space
The pressurized volume is intended to support astronauts during surface missions, giving crews a place to sleep, perform daily tasks and conduct work away from a lander or rover.
Science with or without a crew
MPH is designed to host scientific experiments while astronauts are present and to continue supporting investigations during uncrewed periods. That capability could let instruments remain active between crewed visits instead of stopping whenever the habitat is empty.
Logistics and resource handling
Thales describes an architecture oriented toward water and resource supply, recycling and local production systems. These functions are meant to reduce the amount of material that must be delivered from Earth and to make surface operations more resilient.

Mobility across the surface
The concept is not limited to a permanently fixed room. Its planned mobility role would allow the habitat or its supporting systems to operate across more than one lunar site, although the exact mobility architecture remains part of the design work.
What the early concept looks like
Public renders and early reporting show a cylindrical pressurized body, solar arrays and articulated legs. Those are concept-stage visual cues, not a final certified flight configuration.
| Reported characteristic | Public figure or description | Qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Width | Approximately 3 metres | Programme figure reported by European Spaceflight in 2025; not a final certified dimension. |
| Length | Approximately 6 metres | Programme figure reported by European Spaceflight in 2025; not a final certified dimension. |
| Mass | Approximately 15 tonnes | Programme figure reported by European Spaceflight in 2025; configuration may change during design reviews. |
| Exterior cues | Cylindrical pressure shell, solar arrays and articulated legs | Shown in early renders; the reviewed design could differ. |
How astronauts would live and work inside it
A lunar habitat must do more than hold air. Thales’ stated concept combines pressurized living space with life-support, power and resource systems designed for extended surface operations.
- Life support: maintain a breathable, temperature-controlled environment for crew activity.
- Energy autonomy: use power-generation and storage systems sized for operations away from continuous Earth support.
- Water and resource systems: supply, recycle and manage consumables needed by people and experiments.
- Local production: pursue systems that can make or process useful materials at the lunar site rather than importing everything.
- Uncrewed operation: keep selected experiments and surface functions running when no astronauts are inside.
The public material identifies these capabilities at the architecture level. It does not yet establish the final crew capacity, interior layout, detailed recycling rates or exact power budget.

The engineering problems MPH has to solve
Extreme thermal swings
The lunar surface experiences severe temperature changes. The habitat’s structure, seals, electronics, thermal-control hardware and stored resources must remain within operating limits as conditions change.
Radiation
With no substantial lunar atmosphere or global magnetic field to provide Earth-like protection, crews and electronics face a harsher radiation environment. Shielding and mission planning must protect people without making the module too heavy to launch.
Ubiquitous lunar dust
Moon dust can contaminate seals, mechanisms, suits, radiators and instruments. A mobile, reusable habitat has to limit dust intrusion and keep moving parts functioning after repeated surface activity.
Micrometeoroid impacts
Small high-speed particles can damage exposed surfaces and pressure boundaries. The pressure shell and external systems therefore need protection and fault-tolerant design.

Reduced gravity
Lunar gravity changes how loads, vehicles, fluids, tools and human movement behave. Hardware designed for Earth cannot simply be installed unchanged and expected to work the same way.
Long periods without direct crew intervention
MPH is expected to operate through intervals when astronauts are elsewhere or absent. Its control, fault detection, power and thermal systems must therefore support safe autonomous or remotely supervised operation.

— Thales Alenia Space programme team, 23 November 2023
Within that architecture, MPH is positioned as a platform for science, technology demonstrations and surface logistics near the south pole. It is one element of a planned network of missions, landers, vehicles, power systems and other facilities—not the entire Artemis surface base by itself.
Is the moon habitat real or just a render?
The development programme is real: ASI and NASA have completed a formal review, and Thales has a preliminary-design contract. The images are not proof that a finished habitat exists. They show an evolving concept whose dimensions, mechanisms and subsystem arrangement can change before the 2027 design review and later flight qualification.
