It depends on when the CNET article was published. English Wikipedia’s Perennial Sources list rates CNET as generally reliable for material published before October 2020, gives no consensus to work from October 2020 through October 2022, and rates material from November 2022 onward as generally unreliable. The change followed revelations that CNET had published AI-generated personal-finance articles containing factual errors.
What Wikipedia’s CNET rating actually says
Wikipedia’s assessment is a community sourcing guideline for editors, not a universal certification of every CNET article. It does not order readers to discard every CNET citation, and it is not a finding that every CNET story is false. Editors are expected to consider the publication date, subject, article quality and available corroboration.

| Publication period | English Wikipedia assessment | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Before October 2020 | Generally reliable | CNET’s earlier material retains the list’s generally reliable designation. |
| October 2020 through October 2022 | No consensus | The list does not settle on either a generally reliable or generally unreliable classification for this period. |
| November 2022 onward | Generally unreliable | Editors are warned to treat this period with substantial caution and seek stronger independent sources. |
The split follows changes surrounding Red Ventures’ acquisition of CNET in October 2020 and concerns about work published after the site began experimenting with automated finance content.

Why did Wikipedia downgrade CNET’s reliability rating?
In January 2023, reporting revealed that CNET had published finance explainers generated with an AI tool. The pieces initially appeared under “CNET Money Staff”; an automation disclosure was available through the byline, but the labeling was later revised and an accuracy review was announced. Wikipedia editors opened a discussion that month, and in February 2023 classified CNET as generally unreliable for the period beginning November 2022.

- Wonder House Books
- Knowledge Encyclopedia: Boxset of 8 Books (Knowledge Encyclopedia For Children)
Wikipedia’s current entry says more than 70 finance-related articles were published under that staff byline and that Red Ventures corrected over half of them. Those figures are the wording of the Perennial Sources entry as reported in 2024, rather than a new audit of CNET’s entire archive.
What did CNET’s AI articles get wrong?
A compound-interest calculation
The clearest documented example involved a $10,000 deposit earning 3 percent for one year. The article stated that the deposit would yield $10,300 after a year. Under the stated assumptions of annual compounding and no other changes, $10,300 is the ending balance; the interest earned is $300. Calling the full balance the “interest” is a basic but consequential error in a personal-finance explainer.
Why the error mattered beyond one number
Finance readers use these articles to make decisions about savings, borrowing and returns. A calculation that confuses earnings with the final balance can mislead readers even when the arithmetic needed to obtain the balance is otherwise straightforward. The episode also raised questions about how generated drafts were checked, labeled and monetized. Wikipedia’s entry specifically mentions rapid production, factual inaccuracies and affiliate links as reasons for concern.

- October 2020: Red Ventures acquired CNET. Wikipedia later separated pre-acquisition material from subsequent periods.
- November 2022: This is the start date Wikipedia uses for the period it now labels generally unreliable.
- January 2023: Coverage revealed the AI-generated finance articles and the initial byline and disclosure approach.
- January 18, 2023: Futurism reported that Wikipedia editor David Gerard opened the CNET discussion, describing the experimental AI articles as riddled with errors.
- February 2023: Wikipedia editors adopted the generally unreliable assessment for material from November 2022 onward.
- February 29, 2024: Futurism published a detailed account of the rating. Ars Technica reported CNET’s response that it was not actively using AI to create new content at that time.
What CNET said about the controversy
In a statement reported by Ars Technica in February 2024, a CNET spokesperson called CNET “the world’s largest provider of unbiased tech-focused news and advice” and said, “It is important to clarify that CNET is not actively using AI to create new content.” That statement describes CNET’s position at the time; it does not establish the site’s current AI policy.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Does the rating mean every CNET citation must be removed?
No. Wikipedia’s Perennial Sources ratings are community determinations based on public discussion and consensus. They are not a pre-approval system, and a “generally unreliable” label is not a command to delete every reference automatically. Editors should evaluate whether a particular claim is directly supported, whether the article is from the affected period, and whether independent, higher-quality sources confirm it.
For Wikipedia editors
- Check the CNET publication date against the three-period timeline.
- Prefer primary documents, official records and specialist reporting for consequential claims.
- Use a CNET article cautiously when it is the only source, especially for finance, health, legal or technical claims.
- Do not assume the rating applies identically to every language edition of Wikipedia; sourcing guidance can vary by project.
For ordinary readers
- Treat older CNET reporting and newer CNET reporting as separate evidence rather than applying one label to the whole archive.
- Check the underlying calculation, quotation or official document when an article affects money or other high-stakes decisions.
- Look for corroboration from sources with transparent authorship, editorial review and a record appropriate to the subject.
When did Wikipedia stop considering CNET generally reliable?
There is no single date that applies to all CNET material. Wikipedia’s current timeline keeps the generally reliable assessment for articles published before October 2020, records no consensus for October 2020 through October 2022, and begins the generally unreliable period in November 2022. The editor discussion and formal downgrade occurred in early 2023, after the AI-generated finance articles became public.

What this episode does—and does not—prove
It demonstrates that CNET published a substantial batch of AI-generated finance content and corrected many of those pieces after factual problems were identified. It does not prove that every CNET article is inaccurate, that all CNET journalism after November 2022 was generated by AI, or that the rating alone caused a measurable change in CNET traffic or revenue. No independently authored statistical study establishing such a long-term business effect is identified here.
