File Converter lets you convert supported files from Windows File Explorer’s right-click menu: select a file, choose File Converter, then choose an output format. It can also handle multiple files and lets you customize the available presets, according to PCWorld’s September 21, 2026 report. That means many everyday conversions can be done without opening a separate converter or uploading files to a web service.
How File Converter works
File Converter is a Windows utility from the Tichau project. The project describes it as a tool for converting and compressing files through Windows Explorer’s context menu. After installation, the basic workflow is:
- Select a supported file in File Explorer. PCWorld says the app can process multiple files at once.
- Right-click the selection and choose File Converter.
- Choose an available output format and let the app perform the conversion.
PCWorld also reports that you can customize the presets shown in the menu and adjust their settings. The exact choices depend on the file type and the supported input/output combinations; the app does not promise conversion between every possible pair of formats.
What formats can it convert?
The official format list groups supported outputs by category. It includes:

Inputs include various image, video and audio formats, as well as Microsoft Office and OpenDocument file types for document conversion. Check the official format list for the specific input/output pairing you need. For example, a HEIC-to-JPG conversion is the kind of image task highlighted by PCWorld, but the available menu choices are determined by the app’s supported formats.
Can it convert Word or Excel files to PDF?
It can convert listed Office document types to PDF, but Microsoft Office must be installed and activated for Office-file conversions. A Windows PC without an activated Office installation should not be assumed to handle Word, Excel or PowerPoint conversion through this feature.

What to know about cost, license and privacy
PCWorld describes File Converter as free and open source, with no ads, and reports the app’s claim that it does not collect data. Treat that privacy statement as a claim, not an independently verified audit. The project repository identifies the license as GPL-3.0; consult the project repository for its terms and current project information.
