It cannot identify whether a poor result came from the cable, router, switch, devices, settings, or other network conditions. An Ethernet cable test examines the physical link itself: a basic tester checks wiring, while more capable instruments measure signal performance. The right test can turn “the connection is slow” into evidence about whether the cable is at fault.
What an Ethernet cable test tells you
A basic cable tester checks the wire map: whether the conductors connect to the expected pins at the far end. Depending on the tester, it can reveal opens (broken connections), shorts, crossed or reversed pairs, split pairs, and other miswires. A remote unit lets you test a cable run whose far end is in another room.

That check is useful, but limited. A wire-map pass means the tester did not find the wiring faults it checks for; it does not prove that the cable meets a cabling standard or can reliably carry a particular data rate.

What advanced testers measure
More capable tools assess electrical behavior across frequencies, not just whether the wires connect. Depending on the instrument and selected test, results can include:

- What you will get: 1 * TLP-123A Network Cable Tester, 1 * user manual, 2 * AAA batteries
- Insertion loss (attenuation): how much signal is lost as it travels along the link.
- Return loss: signal energy reflected by impedance changes along the link.
- NEXT: near-end crosstalk, or interference between pairs measured near the end where the disturbing signal is transmitted.
- Delay skew: differences in how quickly signals travel through the cable pairs.
- Length and wire map: link length and conductor connections.
The test set and limits depend on the instrument and the cabling standard selected. For example, Fluke describes its LinkIQ as combining frequency-based measurements with wire mapping, identifying opens, shorts, split pairs, and miswires, and qualifying supported Ethernet rates up to 10GBASE-T. Those are features of that professional tester, not of every cable tester. See Fluke’s LinkIQ product information and its user manual.
Why it can tell you more than a speed test
A speed test measures an end-to-end outcome under the conditions at that moment. It can show that throughput is lower than expected, but it does not isolate the cause. A cable test provides evidence about the physical link, helping determine whether wiring or signal performance may be contributing to the problem.

These tests answer different questions, so one does not replace the other. A cable can pass a basic wire-map check while still having a performance problem that the tester cannot detect. Conversely, poor speed-test results do not prove that the cable is bad: the router, switch, endpoint, configuration, or other network conditions may be responsible. Fluke’s cable-testing overview explains the different levels of testing and the parameters involved.
Verification, qualification, and certification are not the same
Choose the test by the decision you need to make. Fluke distinguishes basic verification, qualification, and certification in its testing overview and network troubleshooting guide.

- EXTENDED CABLE LENGTH MEASUREMENT: Measure cable length up to 2000 feet (610 m), allowing for precise cable length determination
- COMPREHENSIVE FAULT DETECTION: Test for Open, Short, Miswire, or Split-Pair faults, ensuring thorough fault detection and identification
- BACKLIT LCD DISPLAY: Backlit LCD screen displays cable length, wiremap, cable ID, and test results, ensuring easy readability in various lighting conditions
- EFFICIENT CABLE TRACING: Trace cables, wire pairs, and individual conductor wires using the multiple style tone generator (requires analog probe Cat. No. VDV500-123, sold separately), simplifying cable tracing tasks
| Test type | What it answers | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| Verification | Are the basic wire connections correct, and are there faults the tester can detect? | That the link meets a cabling standard or supports a particular network technology. |
| Qualification | Can the installed cabling support a specified network technology, according to the tester’s supported tests? | Full compliance with a cabling standard. |
| Certification | Does the link meet the specified limits for a selected cabling standard across its required test parameters? | Performance outside the chosen standard, configuration, and test scope. |
A certification result is the appropriate evidence when a contract, warranty, or handover requires standards compliance. It requires a properly configured certification instrument, testing against the standard’s specified parameters, and retaining the results. A basic tester’s “pass” is not certification.

For a loose cable or a home run
- Use an RJ45 Ethernet cable tester with a compatible remote unit. Connect the main tester to one end and the remote to the other, following the tester’s instructions.
- Run the wire-map test. If it reports a fault, use the tester’s indication to identify an open, short, or miswire; check the cable and terminations, then test again.
- Treat a pass as a basic wiring result only. It does not certify performance.
Fluke’s residential cabling guidance lists polarity, excessive length, shorts, opens, and other wiring problems among conditions that can be detected. Its cited Cat 5e guidance gives a 90 m permanent-link limit and a 100 m channel limit; those figures apply to the configuration and context in that document, not universally to every standard or installation.

- Multi-Function Network Cable Tester: Supports RJ45 (CAT5, CAT5e, CAT6, CAT6A, CAT7) and RJ11 telephone cables. Quickly detects continuity, short circuits, open wires, miswiring, and cable shielding status, ensuring your LAN or phone lines are correctly wired and ready to use.
- Fast/Slow Mode with LED Indicators: Switch between fast and slow scan speeds to identify wiring issues more precisely. LED lights on both master and remote units show wire order, making it easy to spot errors like open pairs or misaligned pins at a glance.
- Split-Type Design for Long-Distance Testing: Master and remote units can be detached and used separately, allowing you to test both ends of a long cable run, ideal for wall-mounted ports, long runs, or structured cabling. Perfect for home, office, or professional IT setups.
- Compact, Lightweight & Durable: Ergonomically designed with sturdy ABS housing, this pocket-sized tester is ideal for on-the-go network engineers, DIYers, and electricians. It’s your go-to toolkit for cable maintenance, upgrades, or new installations.
- Safe & Easy to Use: Simple one-button operation makes testing quick and hassle-free. LED indicators clearly show wiring status, while the G light instantly identifies shielded (FTP/STP) or unshielded (UTP) cables. Supports safe testing of telephone lines with typical voltages under 48-72V, ideal for both home and professional use.
To check support for a target network technology
Choose a qualification tester that explicitly supports the cable type and technology you want to verify. A generic wire-map tester cannot answer whether an installed link will support that target.

- Fault detection: check whether it identifies opens, shorts, split pairs, miswires, and other faults you need to locate.
- Performance measurements: find out whether it measures frequency-based parameters such as insertion loss, return loss, or crosstalk, rather than continuity alone.
- Connections and reporting: check compatibility with the cable connectors and remote units you use, and whether the tester can save reports if you need a record.
