A word-generation website called This Word Does Not Exist was built to make that kind of plausible-sounding invention. It generated words with definitions; it was not a dictionary and did not check whether a word was real.
What did This Word Does Not Exist do?
In a feature published May 14, 2020, Futurism credited former Instagram engineer Thomas Dimson with creating the site and reported that it used OpenAI’s GPT-2. Refreshing the page produced a new invented word and a definition intended to sound plausible. Some results were more convincing than others.

The site’s name and presentation made the distinction important: a generated word-definition pair was an example of machine-generated text, not evidence that the word appeared in a dictionary or had an accepted meaning. The available account does not establish whether the site still operates or what model it might use today.

Why could GPT-2 make invented words sound believable?
GPT-2 generates text by predicting what comes next in a sequence. OpenAI described its objective as predicting the next word in text, rather than consulting a dictionary to verify a term. Given patterns in its training material, a model can produce word-like forms and fluent explanations without establishing that either is lexically authoritative. OpenAI’s 2019 announcement described GPT-2 as a 1.5-billion-parameter model trained on a dataset of 8 million web pages; those figures describe the model and the announcement’s dataset description, not the fake-word site’s vocabulary or accuracy.

OpenAI’s GPT-2 model card, last updated in November 2019, describes WebText as text contents from 45 million links posted by Reddit users. It explains that the data came from outbound links rather than being taken directly from Reddit itself. The model card dates GPT-2 to February 2019 and says its training-data cutoff was the end of 2017. These descriptions provide context for the model’s training; they do not mean it learned or checked formal dictionary entries.
Can you trust a generated definition?
Not as a definition of an established word. Futurism reported that some of the site’s generated definitions were “a little bit off” and noted that GPT-2 was not trained on dictionaries. Fluency is not verification: a plausible explanation can still be inaccurate, and an invented term can resemble a real one by coincidence.

To establish whether a word is recognized and what it means, consult a reputable dictionary or another relevant lexical authority. Treat the site’s output as a creative AI-generated curiosity, not as a source for spelling, meaning, or usage.

What is known about the site now?
The cited coverage documents the project as it was described in 2020: its reported creator, GPT-2 implementation, and refresh-to-generate behavior. It does not establish present-day availability, the model or version currently in use, an accuracy rate, or a formal evaluation. Those details should not be inferred from the historical description.
