This app lets Galaxy SmartTag work with any Android device

That headline is usually about one thing: you don’t need a Samsung Galaxy phone to use Galaxy SmartTag. What you need is the app and services that can talk to the tag and your Samsung account.

On Android, the practical path is Samsung SmartThings. With the SmartThings app installed on your non-Samsung Android phone, you can pair Galaxy SmartTag and get location and “find nearby” style behavior—assuming Bluetooth and required permissions are enabled.

If your goal is “it just works” with any Android device, this guide covers the setup steps, what to expect, and the most common failure modes.

What Galaxy SmartTag actually depends on

Galaxy SmartTag is a Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) device plus account-linked services. Your phone has to do two jobs: pair with the tag locally, then participate in the broader “find” experience when the tag isn’t in range.

Samsung SmartTag2 (2023) Bluetooth + UWB, IP67 Water and Dust Resistant, Findable via App, 1.5 Year Battery Life (4-Pack) - Black/White (Global Edition, No US Warranty)
  • Find your things with ease: The SmartThings Find app uses Bluetooth and ultra-wideband (UWB) technology to locate and keep track of your stuff
  • Water and Dust Resistant: IP67 rating offers protection against dust and water immersion between 15 cm and 1 meter for up to 30 minutes
  • Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only

Core requirements

  • Bluetooth LE on your phone (most Android devices support this).
  • SmartThings app installed on that phone.
  • A Samsung account signed into SmartThings.
  • Location permission (required on Android for BLE scanning in practice).
  • Battery/Background permissions so scans continue when the app is running in the background.

Model note

SmartTag and SmartTag2 are the common Galaxy SmartTag variants. Pairing and the SmartThings workflow are similar, but features and responsiveness can vary slightly by firmware and network availability.

The app that makes it work on any Android phone: Samsung SmartThings

SmartThings is the “works with any Android device” bridge. The tag still needs to be added inside SmartThings, but that app is available on Google Play for a wide range of Android phones.

In practice, this means your phone doesn’t have to be a Galaxy—your Android just has to meet the app’s platform requirements and allow BLE scanning.

Compatibility checklist (Android + accounts + Bluetooth)

Requirement What to check Where to verify
Android version SmartThings must be installable from Google Play on your device Google Play listing for SmartThings
Samsung account Sign in with the same account you’ll use for tracking SmartThings > Profile > Sign in
Bluetooth Bluetooth must be ON before pairing Android Quick Settings > Bluetooth
Location services Enable Location; BLE scanning typically requires location permission Settings > Location > On
Permissions SmartThings allowed to scan and run in background Settings > Apps > SmartThings > Permissions
Battery optimization Disable aggressive battery optimization for SmartThings Settings > Battery > SmartThings > Unrestricted

Set up Galaxy SmartTag on a non-Samsung Android device

Pairing is straightforward when the phone has Bluetooth and location permissions ready. The only “gotcha” is that Android power management can interrupt discovery or reduce reliability.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Step 1: Install and sign in to SmartThings

  1. Install SmartThings from Google Play.
  2. Open SmartThings and sign in with your Samsung account.
  3. When prompted, accept location and Bluetooth-related permissions.

Step 2: Prepare the SmartTag for pairing

  1. Insert/confirm the SmartTag battery.
  2. Press and hold the SmartTag button until it enters pairing mode.
  3. Look for pairing feedback (often an indicator light or an on-screen prompt when the tag is discoverable).

Pairing mode timing varies by model, but you typically have a short window. If you miss it, release power and try again.

Samsung SmartTag2 (2023) Bluetooth + UWB, IP67 Water and Dust Resistant, Findable via App, 1.5 Year Battery Life - Black (International Version)
  • Compatible with Galaxy Devices Only.

Step 3: Add the SmartTag to your SmartThings account

  1. In SmartThings, tap + (Add device).
  2. Select Device / SmartThings Device (exact wording varies by version).
  3. Choose Tag or SmartTag.
  4. Follow the on-screen pairing instructions until the device appears in your SmartThings list.

If your tag doesn’t appear, turn Bluetooth off and on again, confirm Location is enabled, and ensure SmartThings has location permission granted.

Step 4: Test location and proximity features

  1. Open your SmartTag in SmartThings.
  2. Use the Find or Locate option (button labels vary).
  3. Stand near the tag (within a few meters) and confirm you get a signal/proximity result.
  4. Walk away and check the last known location behavior.

Expect faster results when the tag is nearby. When it’s not, updates depend on the find network seeing the tag.

How SmartTag sharing and the Find network behave on Android

SmartTag doesn’t “broadcast GPS.” It reports context through Bluetooth and then uses the network to infer location when nearby devices detect it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Location vs. nearby detection

  • Nearby detection uses BLE scanning and your phone’s proximity to provide the most immediate response.
  • Location updates rely on other phones and services detecting the tag and syncing that information to your account.

What you can expect from the community-assisted network

There’s no guaranteed refresh rate. If the tag is offline or in an area with limited nearby detections, location updates can be delayed by hours—or not at all until it’s detected again.

On Android, reliability usually improves when SmartThings can run with background permission and isn’t throttled by battery optimization.

Common issues when using SmartTag on a non-Samsung phone

Most problems fall into four buckets: pairing discovery fails, location doesn’t update, alerts don’t trigger, or power management kills responsiveness.

Pairing fails or the tag doesn’t show up

  1. Confirm Bluetooth is ON and Location is enabled.
  2. Close SmartThings completely and reopen it.
  3. Turn off Bluetooth, wait 10 seconds, then turn it back on.
  4. Disable Bluetooth scanning restrictions for SmartThings (if your phone has them).
  5. Try pairing from a different room (RF noise and multipath can affect discovery).

If you recently paired the tag to another account/device, unpairing may be required before it can be added again.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

SmartTag is added but shows no location

  1. Check that SmartThings has location permission set to Allow all the time (or the closest available option).
  2. Open the tag page and run Find while standing near it to confirm BLE works.
  3. Verify the tag isn’t in a dead battery state (replace the battery and retry).
  4. Confirm your account is the same one you’re viewing in SmartThings.

If nearby Find works but remote location doesn’t, it’s likely a network/detection coverage issue—not a phone setting.

Notifications don’t fire

  1. In Android settings, go to Apps > SmartThings > Notifications and enable the relevant channels.
  2. Inside SmartThings, check SmartTag alert settings for proximity or leaving notifications.
  3. Disable “battery saver” for SmartThings. Set it to Unrestricted or Not optimized if available.

Battery drain and Bluetooth problems

Power management is a balancing act. Too much restriction can prevent background scanning; too little can increase battery usage.

  1. Keep SmartThings allowed to run in background, but let Android handle deep battery savings for other apps.
  2. Check SmartThings for frequent background activity settings (if your phone exposes them).
  3. If you see severe drain, confirm you’re not leaving the tag in a “pairing mode” loop.

Alternatives if you can’t use SmartThings fully

Sometimes the limitation isn’t your phone—it’s permission control from the manufacturer (aggressive power policies) or regional availability. When SmartThings pairing works partially, you still have options for basic checks.

Use a Bluetooth scanner app for basic RSSI checks

If you just want to confirm the tag is broadcasting and measure proximity (signal strength), a BLE scanner can help.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Install a BLE scanner from a reputable source (examples include nRF Connect-style apps).
  2. Scan for BLE advertisements while your phone is near the SmartTag.
  3. Look for consistent signal strength changes as you move closer/farther.

This won’t replace the account-linked Find experience, but it helps you diagnose “is the tag alive?” quickly.

Use Task automation with SmartThings routines (when available)

Depending on your SmartThings setup and country, you may be able to trigger routines when the tag is nearby or when actions are detected.

  1. Open SmartThings and go to Automations / Routines.
  2. Create a routine using SmartTag as the trigger (labels vary).
  3. Test while standing near the tag, then repeat with the phone’s screen on and off.

Comparison: what works on any Android vs what’s Samsung-device-dependent

Here’s the reality: the pairing app (SmartThings) is available on Android broadly, so the “tag works on any Android” story holds. What varies is performance and automation depth depending on your phone’s permission model.

Feature Works on any Android (typical) May vary by phone
Pairing and basic Find while nearby Yes, via SmartThings + BLE Yes, depending on permissions and power settings
Account-linked last known location Yes Update speed depends on network detections
Automation via routines Often Routine triggers and reliability depend on OS restrictions
Deep system integration Partial Some features can be smoother on Galaxy devices

Security and privacy considerations

SmartTag is designed to be privacy-aware: it doesn’t behave like a GPS tracker. Still, you should treat it like a location-capable device.

FAQ

Does Galaxy SmartTag require a Samsung phone?

No. SmartThings is what enables pairing and tracking, and it’s available on non-Samsung Android devices. The phone must still allow Bluetooth and location-related permissions for best results.

Will it work on any Android version?

It depends on whether SmartThings can install on your device and whether it supports BLE scanning. Check the Google Play SmartThings listing for your device’s minimum supported Android version.

Why does nearby Find work but remote location never updates?

Nearby Find confirms the tag’s BLE broadcast. Remote updates depend on the find network detecting your tag in the wild. Coverage can be thin in some areas.

How do I improve reliability when I’m not using a Galaxy phone?

Turn on Location, grant SmartThings location permission, and set SmartThings battery optimization to Unrestricted/Not optimized if your phone offers that option. Then test Find while close to the tag.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What if pairing worked once and then stopped?

Replace the battery (first), then remove and re-add the device in SmartThings. Also verify you’re still signed into the same Samsung account and that SmartThings permissions weren’t revoked by an OS update.

Bottom Line

If your Android phone can install Samsung SmartThings and you grant the needed Bluetooth and location permissions, Galaxy SmartTag can be set up and used like you would on a Galaxy device. The tag still relies on SmartThings for pairing and the find experience—it’s the app that bridges the compatibility gap.

When it fails, it’s usually a permissions or power-management issue. Fix Bluetooth/location access first, then test nearby Find before assuming there’s a hardware problem.
