A maker-built Star Wars mouse droid combines autonomous movement with lights and music: it can navigate, react in a panic mode, and switch into a party mode. The “rebel rave machine” is a playful description of Cass’s fan project, not an official Star Wars product. The project says it is not affiliated with or endorsed by Disney or Lucasfilm. What makes this mouse droid a “rebel rave machine”?
The concept is “What if Sabine Wren adopted a mouse droid?” Cass, the maker behind Chaos Theory, gave the custom droid a Sabine Wren-inspired look and added a party mode with lights and audio. Its other documented behaviors include autonomous navigation and a panic mode. These are features described by the project, not results of independent performance testing.

How the droid works
The build combines a custom 3D-printed shell and largely custom chassis with readily identifiable robotics components. An Arduino UNO Rev3 controls two motors through an L298N motor driver. An HC-SR04 ultrasonic sensor supports collision avoidance; a DFPlayer Mini and speaker handle sound; and red LEDs provide the lights. A 7.4V lithium battery pack supplies power, with a buck converter providing 5V.

In practical terms, the board is the controller, the motor driver lets it operate the rover’s motors, and the sensor gives it information for avoiding obstacles. The audio module and speaker enable playback, while the LEDs contribute to the droid’s visual effects. The guide provides the complete component list and construction instructions.
Why Cass designed a custom chassis
Make: reports that Cass designed and 3D-printed most of the chassis. During development, she used an existing flat metal Mecanum chassis as a sturdy mounting point for the motors—not as the finished droid’s defining platform. She told Make: that a future version might remove that support and mount the motors directly with brackets and heat-set inserts.

Designing the parts herself also made the project easier to reproduce: another builder with a 3D printer can use the project files instead of finding a particular RC car or adapting an existing platform. The Make: feature includes Cass’s account of those design choices.

Check the guide’s specifications and fit requirements before substituting electronics or mechanical parts. The documented design uses a particular combination of controller, motor driver, power supply, sensor, and audio module; the sources do not establish that arbitrary replacements will work together. The build also assumes access to a 3D printer and soldering tools.

The guide identifies the original code as MIT-licensed and the 3D files as CC BY-NC 4.0. Those are different licenses: the code’s MIT license is permissive, while the 3D-file license is noncommercial and requires attribution. Read the current guide’s license text before copying, modifying, or sharing either set of files. The guide also cautions that its fan-project files do not grant rights to third-party Star Wars intellectual property.
