Google’s Circle to Search lets you circle something on your screen and ask Google about it—using your phone’s camera view, screenshots, and apps. It’s one of the quickest ways to go from “what is this?” to answers without typing long searches.
Support isn’t limited to a single manufacturer, but it does roll out by model and software configuration. This guide lists widely supported Android phones and, more importantly, shows you how to confirm availability on your exact device.

What Circle to Search is (and how it works)
Circle to Search is a Google feature that turns a user gesture into a search request. You press and hold (or use the gesture) to start the mode, circle an area, and then speak or type what you want to know.

Prerequisites: what needs to be true on your phone
Even if your phone model is compatible, Circle to Search can be hidden or delayed until required software components are installed.
Minimum software expectations
- Android: typically requires a modern Android version (often Android 13/14 class). If your device is on an older OS, support may be limited.
- Google app: you’ll need a current Google app build with Circle to Search functionality.
- Search/Gboard/permissions: the feature is tied to Google’s on-device/assistive components, so permissions and language settings can affect availability.
Region and language
Google features can be region-locked or rolled out unevenly by language. If you’re traveling or your phone language is uncommon, the feature may not appear.
Android phones that have Circle to Search
Circle to Search availability is best-known for current Pixel devices and a growing set of Samsung flagships. Because Google rolls updates out over time, use the checklist later in this guide to confirm on your exact handset.

| Brand | Phone models commonly supported | How to confirm on your device |
|---|---|---|
| Google Pixel | Pixel 8 series (8, 8 Pro, 8a) and recent Pixel models (including Pixel 7 series and Pixel 6a in many regions) | Look for the Circle to Search entry when you press and hold the supported shortcut |
| Samsung Galaxy | Galaxy S24 series (S24, S24+, S24 Ultra) and newer S-series flagships in the rollout wave | Use the gesture/shortcut and confirm Circle to Search launches instead of a generic search |
| Other brands | Support may appear via Google app integration rather than a specific hardware list | Check the feature via the Google app and the shortcut/gesture described below |
Google Pixel (most consistent support)
Pixel devices are the most reliable place to find Circle to Search shortly after new releases. In practice, many users see the feature across Pixel 7-era and Pixel 8-era models once their Google app and system components are updated.

If your Pixel phone feels “almost ready” (everything else is up to date) but Circle to Search still doesn’t appear, it’s usually a rollout flag or an outdated Google app build—fixable with the troubleshooting steps later.
Samsung Galaxy (flagship coverage)
Samsung’s recent flagship Galaxy S series is a common match for Circle to Search. The feature is typically available on the newest S-series models first, with broader coverage following as Google and Samsung align software updates.
If your Galaxy S24 model doesn’t show Circle to Search immediately after an update, re-check both the Google app version and any search-related system settings.

For non-Pixel and non-Samsung devices, Circle to Search tends to depend more heavily on Google app integration, device navigation features, and rollout timing. That means your exact model may work even if a different variant doesn’t.

The most accurate method is the “how to check” workflow below—because it doesn’t require guessing support by model number alone.
How to check if Circle to Search is enabled on your phone
The easiest way to confirm is to attempt to launch it using the supported shortcut. If the phone shows a Circle-style UI, you’re good. If it falls back to a different search mode, Circle to Search may be disabled or not yet enabled.
Try the gesture or button shortcut
- Open any screen where Circle to Search can be meaningful (a webpage, an app with an image, or a photo).
- Press and hold the relevant Google/Screenshot/Search shortcut for your device.
- Look for a Circle-to-search overlay (you should be able to circle an area and submit a query).
If you instead see a different tool (for example, only a standard assistant search, no circle overlay, or the gesture triggers something else), use the checklist in the next subsection.
Verify it inside the Google app and system settings
- Open the Google app.
- Tap your profile icon (top right) > Settings.
- Search within the settings for terms like Circle to Search, Search, or Assistant (the exact wording can vary by build).
- Make sure any related toggles are enabled (and that the app has the permissions it needs).
- Update the Google app via the Play Store if you haven’t updated recently.
On some phones, navigation mode (gesture vs. buttons) changes which shortcut triggers Circle to Search—so it’s normal for it to “disappear” after you change navigation settings.

Set up and best practices
Circle to Search works best when you start from a clear view. Think of it like a camera framing tool plus a question engine.
Use the right launch method for your navigation mode
If you use gesture navigation, you may need a press-and-hold timing that’s different from button navigation. Try both methods if your phone supports multiple search entry points.
Get cleaner results with simple framing
- Circle the main subject, not the entire page.
- Avoid thin, low-contrast details—if the object is tiny, zoom or move closer.
- If the results feel off, circle a different region and re-run the query.
Troubleshooting: Circle to Search doesn’t show up
If you can’t find Circle to Search on a supported model, it’s usually one of: an outdated Google app, a rollout flag, navigation gesture mismatch, or a permission/security setting that blocks the feature UI.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Quick fixes that resolve most cases
- Update Google app: Open Play Store > search for Google > install the latest update.
- Update Android system components: Check for system updates in Settings > System > Software update.
- Restart the phone after updates.
- Clear Google app cache (not data) if the UI is stuck: Settings > Apps > Google > Storage > Clear cache.
- Confirm permissions for Google app features (camera/microphone aren’t always required for every use, but broken permissions can block UI).
When you’ve updated but it still won’t appear
- Check for a region/language mismatch: temporarily switch to a supported language and reboot (if you’re comfortable doing so).
- Disable and re-enable the relevant feature toggle in Google app settings (wording varies; look for Circle/Search/Assistant toggles).
- Reset navigation gestures: switch navigation mode (gestures <-> buttons) and then try the shortcut again.
- Remove conflicting assistants: if you use a third-party assistant/screen-search tool, temporarily disable it to test whether it intercepts the gesture.
If the feature is still missing after these steps, your device may simply be waiting on a rollout. In that case, the most reliable fix is time plus confirmed updates—Circle to Search is not always available immediately after an OS update.

Common gotchas
- You’re looking in the wrong place: Circle to Search is triggered from a shortcut/gesture, not always visible as a standalone app setting.
- Gesture timing: a too-short press can launch a different search mode.
- Home screen vs. app content: test inside an app with images (browser tab, social app, gallery) to confirm the UI shows correctly.
Circle to Search vs. Google Lens
Circle to Search is primarily a fast, gesture-first search workflow. Google Lens is more focused on analyzing content (often via camera or images) and can be initiated from other entry points.
If you want “point at something and search with minimal typing,” Circle to Search usually feels faster. If you want more detailed image analysis or scanning workflows, Lens can still be the better fit.
Bottom Line
Circle to Search is available on many modern Android phones—especially recent Google Pixel models and Samsung Galaxy flagships—though exact support can vary by rollout and configuration.
Use the shortcut test and the Google app settings check to confirm on your specific device. Once it shows up, the workflow is straightforward: launch, circle the area, and ask your question.
FAQs
Why can’t I find Circle to Search on a supported phone model?
Most commonly it’s an outdated Google app build, a rollout flag, or your navigation/shortcut is configured to trigger a different feature. Update Google, restart, and try again after switching navigation mode.
Does Circle to Search work on screenshots?
Often yes. If your device supports the feature, you can usually launch it on screen content, including pages and images that are already visible.
Is Circle to Search the same as Google Lens?
They’re related but not identical. Circle to Search is a gesture-based “circle and ask” entry point, while Lens is a broader image analysis tool.
