The figures describe HTTP requests categorized as bot traffic—not social-media accounts, operators, or influence campaigns. Yandex’s own documentation lists search crawlers alongside specialized robots for other tasks, and the available sources do not establish what share of the measured traffic depended on the affected data centers.
What happened to Yandex’s data centers?
Yandex said its Sasovo data center was seriously damaged on the night of October 7–8, 2026, and was completely shut down. In an October 9 update, the company also reported an attack on its Kaluga facility, where part of the infrastructure was out of service. Yandex said staff at both sites were unharmed and that it was difficult to estimate when restoration would be complete. The company later reported that its Vladimir data center was attacked overnight on October 11 and stopped operating; no staff were hurt there. These are Yandex’s accounts of the incidents, not independent findings about their cause or attribution. Yandex’s October 9 update, revised with the Vladimir incident, quoted the company: “For now, it is very difficult to say when the equipment at the data centers will be back up and running.”

Separately, Yandex Cloud’s status history recorded power-supply interruptions affecting the Russian installation’s ru-central1-b availability zone beginning October 7. An October 10 update still listed the zone as unavailable while engineers worked on the consequences. This establishes an outage in Yandex Cloud’s own status record; it does not identify which crawler workloads or operators relied on that zone. Yandex Cloud’s status history
What did the reported bot-traffic drop measure?
Tom’s Hardware, citing Cloudflare Radar, reported that HTTP requests categorized as bot traffic from the Yandex network had fallen to 0.4% of the maximum request count over the preceding two weeks. The report also described an initial decline to around 57% on October 8. Those percentages are Cloudflare network measurements as relayed by Tom’s Hardware; they are not a count of Russian propaganda accounts or a census of bots on social platforms. The available report does not provide a detailed methodology for the initial 57% figure. Tom’s Hardware’s October 11 report

The distinction is about both the unit and the attribution: a request observed on a network is not the same thing as an account, an operator, or an influence campaign. A sharp change in one does not, on its own, establish a change in the others.
Why “Yandex bot” does not mean “Russian disinformation bot”
Yandex describes YandexBot as its main indexing robot, but its documented robot ecosystem also includes specialized crawlers for tasks such as image indexing, checking site availability, gathering advertising information, and processing user-requested content. That makes crawler activity a plausible major component of traffic associated with Yandex’s network. It is an interpretation, however: the cited sources do not quantify the composition of Cloudflare’s measured traffic series. Yandex Webmaster: How to check that a robot belongs to Yandex

“Bot” is a broad description of automated software, not a statement of motive. A search crawler requesting web pages and a coordinated account posting political messages are different kinds of activity, measured in different ways. The reported HTTP-request figures cannot be used to calculate how many disinformation accounts were affected.
What the outage does—and does not—establish
- Established: Yandex reported serious damage and shutdown at Sasovo, partial infrastructure outages at Kaluga, and a later shutdown at Vladimir. Yandex Cloud’s history also recorded ru-central1-b as unavailable after power-supply interruptions.
- Reported measurement: Tom’s Hardware said Cloudflare Radar showed Yandex-network bot-category requests falling to 0.4% of the preceding two-week maximum, after an initial decline to around 57% on October 8.
- Not established: The figures do not show how many coordinated Russian disinformation accounts went offline, whether any such activity depended on the affected infrastructure, or what portion of the measured requests came from particular Yandex robots.
Yandex called data centers “the iron heart of Yandex”—the company’s own characterization of their importance. The outages and traffic decline are evidence of disruption to infrastructure and observed automated requests, not proof that Russian influence operations were disabled. The available sources also do not justify the opposite categorical claim that no such operation was affected.
