Is Ciri the main character in The Witcher 4?
Yes. CD PROJEKT RED describes Ciri as the planned main protagonist of The Witcher 4. Joint CEO Michał Nowakowski said on September 2, 2026: “Eleven years after his last adventure Geralt will hit the trail one more time – before Ciri takes over as the main protagonist in The Witcher 4.”
The wording establishes the intended character handover, but the company has not published a complete explanation of Ciri’s abilities, playable systems, story setting or how the game will handle her connection to Geralt and the earlier trilogy. Those details should not be inferred from the release roadmap alone.

Will Geralt be in the next Witcher game?
Geralt is returning in Songs of the Past, not as the announced lead of The Witcher 4. The 2027 project is described as a third expansion for The Witcher 3 and gives him another adventure before Ciri’s lead role begins.
CD PROJEKT RED is co-developing the expansion with Fool’s Theory and currently lists PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S and PC as its platforms. No story length, price, launch date or Nintendo Switch 2 version has been announced for the expansion.

What is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt – Remastered?
The remastered edition is planned for September 29, 2026, on PC, PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, with a native version for Nintendo Switch 2. It includes both previously released expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine. CD PROJEKT RED says owners of the base edition can download the remaster at no additional charge.

What has actually been shown of The Witcher 4?
The clearest public development milestone is a technology demonstration presented by CD PROJEKT RED and Epic Games at State of Unreal on June 3, 2025. The work was tied to the studios’ strategic collaboration around Unreal Engine 5.
The demonstration shows technical direction rather than a finished game. It is not confirmation of a final feature list, launch build, performance target, map size or visual quality at release. In a 2025 first-half earnings release, Nowakowski said the companies were developing innovations together to make the studio’s open worlds “even more immersive and interactive” and that the work with Epic Games would guide how it creates player experiences.

Why the roadmap matters
The schedule gives the franchise a staged transition rather than an immediate jump from Geralt’s original trilogy to Ciri’s new lead role. Players get a revised version of the existing adventure in 2026, a fresh Geralt story in 2027 and then the next mainline chapter in 2028.
The scale of the audience helps explain the importance of the announcement. CD PROJEKT RED reported in September 2026 that The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt had sold more than 65 million copies and that the full Witcher series had surpassed 90 million. The company also reported more than 250 Game of the Year awards and 1,000 industry awards across the franchise.

- No exact day or month has been announced for The Witcher 4 beyond the planned 2028 window.

What to play before The Witcher 4
Players who want the narrative context can start with The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt and its Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine expansions. The remastered release is the planned 2026 route for new-generation consoles and Nintendo Switch 2, while the 2027 expansion is designed to put Geralt back at the center immediately before Ciri’s planned takeover.
