For most players who already own the game on a supported current platform, it is worth installing: eligible owners can upgrade free within the same platform ecosystem, and the update changes graphics, combat progression, controls, and quality-of-life features. PC performance depends heavily on hardware and settings, so test it on your own system before enabling demanding options such as path tracing.
First, what does “Remastered” mean?
There are three versions to distinguish. The 2015 original is the baseline release. CD PROJEKT RED’s version 4.0 next-gen update arrived in December 2022, adding features such as ray-traced global illumination and ambient occlusion, improved textures and environments, photo mode, a closer alternative camera, and cross-progression. Its feature set varied by platform: the publisher’s 2022 update notes state, “The Xbox Series S version has no ray-tracing features.”

The 2026 Remastered release is a further update, launched September 29, 2026 for PC, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch 2. It should not be confused with version 4.0. CD PROJEKT RED describes the new release and its platform features in its Remastered announcement.
What changed in the 2026 Remastered edition?
Graphics and rendering
Remastered updates the rendering pipeline and image presentation. CD PROJEKT RED lists native DirectX 12 multithreaded rendering, revised shading and tone mapping, updated textures and models drawing on the HD Reworked Project, improved foliage lighting, GTAO, updated screen-space reflections and shadows, ray-traced local shadows, and improved HDR calibration. The publisher’s feature list says the game “now features native DirectX 12 rendering with multithreading for better performance and visuals.”

These features do not mean every platform renders the game the same way. PC adds path tracing, NVIDIA DLSS 4.5 with Ray Reconstruction, AMD FSR 4 on Radeon RX 7000-series and newer GPUs (with FSR 2 as a fallback on unsupported GPUs), Intel XeSS 2.0, and ray-traced HairWorks. Those PC-specific options should not be assumed to be available on consoles.
Combat, builds, and progression
The update revises animations and visual effects, adds finishers, adjusts enemy behavior, and changes the skill tree and balance. An independent reviewer found the revised progression clearer and said it made builds easier to shape; that is a reviewer’s assessment, not a controlled gameplay measurement. A closer alternative camera is also part of the update.
Controls, interface, and customization
Remastered adds transmogrification, expands photo mode, improves loot windows and notifications, adds more minimap controls, makes it easier to disengage from combat, allows looting while mounted, and streamlines tutorials. It also adds cross-platform mod support through mod.io and a Bard’s Ballad preset with optional simplified mechanics.

Some additions are tied to particular hardware:
- PS5 Pro: PSSR, VRR, uncapped frame rates, and updated graphics modes.
- Nintendo Switch 2: touch input, Joy-Con 2 HD Rumble, VRR in handheld mode, and HDR.
- PC: DualSense haptics, in addition to the PC graphics options listed above.
These are platform-specific capabilities, not a feature checklist shared by every version.
How does performance compare with the original on PC?
There is no reliable universal verdict that Remastered is always faster or always slower. Results vary by GPU, resolution, preset, and test setup. In its 2026 launch-period benchmark, TechSpot found mixed results for the RTX 5070 Ti: Remastered was 7% slower than Classic at 1080p Ultra, 23% faster at 1440p Medium, and 23% slower at 1440p Ultra. At 4K Medium, TechSpot measured Remastered as 36% faster than the original on the RTX 5070 Ti and 45% faster on the RX 9070 XT. These are results for those named GPUs and TechSpot’s test conditions, not predictions for every PC.
TechSpot also reported unusual GPU scaling and possible driver-related limits in its testing. It found path tracing demanding and, in selected scenes, sometimes less convincing visually than conventional ray tracing. GamesRadar’s launch-period review reported occasional slowdowns in busy scenes or combat, but that observation was not a controlled benchmark and does not establish how a later patched build performs. CD PROJEKT RED’s availability page listed PC hotfix 5.00c and console/Xbox Play Anywhere patch 5.00b, both dated October 1, 2026. Patch status and performance can change, so check the latest notes for your platform.
Because the publisher says PC system requirements changed, use its current requirements rather than relying on older minimum or recommended specifications. If you are unsure how your PC will handle the new options, begin with a non-ray-traced preset and compare frame pacing and image quality before trying path tracing.

Is the upgrade free, and what content is included?
CD PROJEKT RED says qualifying owners of physical or digital copies can upgrade free within the same platform ecosystem. That does not mean a purchase on one platform automatically grants an entitlement on another. Check the store account and edition you already own before buying again; the official availability notice and the game’s official page give the published upgrade and edition details.
The announced current Complete Edition includes both expansions, Hearts of Stone and Blood and Wine, for owners on GOG, Steam, Epic Games Store, Battle.net, PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Switch 2. The game FAQ says saves remain compatible and cross-progression continues. Storefront entitlement and update steps can differ, so confirm what your account offers before installing or purchasing.
Who should install it, and who should be cautious?
If you already own the game on a supported current platform
Install the free upgrade if your platform account qualifies. The update adds meaningful presentation and usability changes without replacing the underlying story or turning The Witcher 3 into a different game. If you use mods or want to compare versions, back up your save first: save compatibility is stated, but compatibility of every individual mod is not guaranteed.
If you play on a modest or older PC
Check the updated official system requirements, start without ray tracing, and assess performance on your own hardware. Benchmark results from another GPU or preset are not a safe basis for a hardware purchase.
If you are buying the game for the first time
Compare the Complete Edition and actual offer available from your platform’s store. Since both major expansions are included in the announced current Complete Edition, confirm the edition’s contents before checkout.
If you play on PS5 Pro or Switch 2
Decide based on the features documented for your console, rather than assuming that PC options such as path tracing or DLSS apply to it.
