The PC mod Remastered Washed-Out Look Fix – Deep Blacks (SDR and HDR) offers two distinct looks: one that keeps the remaster’s visual direction while lowering lifted blacks, and another that aims closer to the older 4.0 tone and colors. Pick one, not both. Your choice also determines whether you need ReShade for SDR.
Why can The Witcher 3 remaster look washed out?
The mod author describes version 5.0 as having a grey cast and blacks that look lifted, particularly in dark scenes and at night. The author separates that tone-curve and black-level issue from other remastered lighting changes, including bluer skylight in shadows and paler skies. A Windows Central review likewise noted that some areas looked too washed out or too dark after the visual upgrade, alongside improved environmental assets and lighting.

These are descriptions from the mod author and a reviewer, not an official CD Projekt Red diagnosis of a single cause. The author cautions that a global adjustment cannot reproduce version 4.0’s location-by-location grading or undo all of the remastered lighting. Some sunny areas can remain brighter than in 4.0: lowering daylight everywhere would also make shaded and night scenes darker. Nexus Mods listing · Windows Central review
Which mod option should you choose?
The current listing presents two alternatives with different goals. Choose the one that matches what bothers you rather than treating either as a universal best setting.
#1 Best Overall
- Play as a highly trained monster slayer for hire.
- Built for endless adventure, the massive open world of The Witcher sets new standards in terms of size, depth and complexity.
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt Game of the Year edition brings together the base game and all the additional content released to date.
| Option | What it changes | SDR requirement | HDR path |
|---|---|---|---|
| AgX Black Level Fix | Targets grey, lifted blacks while retaining the remastered look. | No ReShade required. | The listing provides an HDR path; no ReShade required. |
| Next-Gen Look | Aims closer to the pre-remaster 4.0 tone curve, with warmer colors and calmer daylight. | ReShade 6.x installed for the game’s DirectX executable, plus the W3NextGenLook_SDR.ini preset. |
The listing provides an HDR path; no ReShade required. |
Do not install both. The files modify the same files, according to the mod page. For HDR, the author says the game follows Windows HDR rather than having its own HDR switch; the listed Windows shortcut is Win+Alt+B. Check Windows HDR status before comparing screenshots so you are comparing the same display mode. Mod description and requirements
What do the mod author’s measurements show?
The author reports measurements from the same save and camera in SDR, with ray tracing on (not path tracing) and Bloom on. “Darkest 1%” means the darkest one percent of pixels; zero is black. These are the author’s own comparisons, not an independent benchmark.
| Scene and measure | Version 4.0 | Vanilla 5.0 | AgX Black Level Fix | Next-Gen Look |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Skellige at night, darkest 1% (SDR) | 0.005 | 0.051 | 0.010 | 0.012 |
| Toussaint by day, darkest 1% (SDR) | 0.018 | 0.093 | 0.076 | 0.053 |
| Toussaint by day, median brightness (SDR) | 0.28 | 0.41 | 0.41 | 0.34 |
For HDR, the author reports a Skellige-at-night darkest-1% result of 0.41 nits for vanilla, 0.015 nits with AgX, and 0.13 nits with Next-Gen Look, at Paper White 200 and Max Brightness 1000. These figures illustrate the author’s claimed effect in those test conditions; they do not establish which option will look best on every display or in every area. - Italian edition.
- Choose one main file. Download either AgX Black Level Fix or Next-Gen Look from the Nexus Mods page; do not combine them.
- Set up the display path. For HDR, use the mod’s HDR path and confirm Windows HDR is set as intended. For SDR Next-Gen Look, install ReShade 6.x for the game’s DirectX executable and use
W3NextGenLook_SDR.ini. AgX does not require ReShade. - Extract the selected files into the game folder. Follow the listing’s setup instructions, then enable mods and local mods in the game.
- Restart the game. If the mod is not shown in the in-game mod list, the author says that can be normal. The important settings are under Options → Gameplay: turn on Enable mods and Enable local mods, then restart. Author replies on Nexus Mods
Try a settings-only change before downloading
As a separate PC troubleshooting suggestion, AllThings. How recommends turning Bloom off first to see whether outdoor contrast improves. It is not a guaranteed fix for every scene or display. Chromatic Aberration, Motion Blur, Vignetting and Blur are also mentioned as preference settings, rather than established causes of the washed-out appearance. AllThings. How’s PC troubleshooting guide, updated 30 September 2026
To compare fairly, change one thing at a time: use the same save, location, time of day and display mode, then compare Bloom off with one mod option. Keep Windows HDR status consistent if using HDR, and never compare the two mod files installed together.
