That investigative route leads to a chase and a choice about deserter John Geermer and the medicine.
What the choice changes
Precious Cargo is a secondary quest in White Orchard. A man near the Nilfgaardian garrison claims monsters dragged his cart into a swamp and asks Geralt to recover a small box. Evidence at the cart contradicts his story: the driver has been killed by arrows, and the horse has also been struck by arrows.

The fast branch is best if you simply want to finish the quest. Choose the challenge if you want to see the deception and make the fuller role-playing decision. The available quest references document immediate quest outcomes, not a lasting effect on the wider war or the game’s ending.

How to uncover the lie
- Go to the cart. Follow the quest marker to the wreck in the swamp.
- Examine the evidence. Inspect the dead driver or the arrow-struck horse. These clues support confronting the man.
- Return and challenge him. Choose the dialogue option recorded as “Seen through your lies” in Witcher.tools. If you accept his account instead, handing over the box ends the quest without the chase.
How to stop the fleeing rider
After Geralt challenges him, the man escapes on horseback. Stop him before he reaches his associates: walkthroughs describe knocking him off with a crossbow bolt, bomb, Aard, or a sword strike. If he gets to the bandits, Geralt must fight them; failing to stop the rider can fail the quest.

Choose what happens to Geermer and the medicine
Once caught, the man identifies himself as John Geermer, a deserter associated with the Temerian Sixth Division. He says the box contains medicine taken from a Nilfgaardian transport. Geralt can decide what to do with both the deserter and the medicine:
- Turn him and the medicine over to the Nilfgaardians. This hands Geermer to the force he stole from.
- Let him go with the medicine. This spares the deserter and leaves the medicine with him.
- Keep the medicine. Witcher.tools lists up to 50 crowns and five celandine plus white myrtle petals for this outcome. These are reported quest rewards, not a guarantee across every edition or platform.
The references report different immediate XP and cash rewards for the final outcomes; consult the Witcher.tools quest entry for its outcome breakdown. There is no universally correct role-playing answer: choose according to whether you prioritize the Nilfgaardians’ claim, Geermer’s circumstances, or keeping the medicine and its listed reward.

Complete it before leaving White Orchard
WitcherDB reports that Precious Cargo can become unavailable when Geralt leaves White Orchard for Vizima after “Lilac and Gooseberries.” If you want to complete it, do so before progressing out of the region; treat this as a reported missability cutoff rather than an official patch-note guarantee.
