In TechSpot’s launch-period visual review, the results were mixed and reviewers generally preferred ray tracing in the scenes they examined. Their 4K test with Performance upscaling averaged 59 FPS on an RTX 5090, 43 FPS on an RTX 5080, and 40 FPS on an RTX 5070 Ti. Those are results from one test setup, not a promise for every PC or scene.
What is being compared?
The comparison depends on the game build. As of October 4, 2026, the relevant PC version is The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Remastered, released September 29, 2026. Its PC patch notes add Path Tracing and list updated reconstruction and upscaling options. The earlier next-gen edition instead offered ray-traced global illumination (RTGI) and ambient occlusion, with optional ray-traced reflections and shadows on compatible PC hardware. Treat those as distinct feature sets, not interchangeable labels. The available publisher notes establish that Remastered supports Path Tracing, but do not provide a technical breakdown of exactly which effects its implementation traces or how it differs internally from every RT setting. It is safer to compare the visible output and measured cost than to assume Path Tracing is superior in every scene.

Does Path Tracing look better than ray tracing?
Not consistently. TechSpot’s visual assessment of the Remastered version found the results mixed and generally preferred RT in the scenes it inspected. It noted examples where facial lighting with Path Tracing looked flatter or overexposed. That is a reviewer judgment, not an objective score for all locations, displays, or player preferences.

For a fair visual comparison, capture both modes in the same build and at the same location, camera position, weather, and time of day. Include indoor and outdoor views, faces, foliage, reflective surfaces, and transitions between light and shadow. Look for observable differences such as reflection stability, shadow detail, indirect light, and highlight behavior; decide separately whether the overall appearance suits the game’s art direction.
How much performance does Path Tracing cost?
TechSpot’s launch-period Remastered benchmark reported the following averages with RT Ultra plus Path Tracing at 4K and Performance upscaling:
| GPU | Average FPS | Test context |
|---|---|---|
| RTX 5090 | 59 FPS | TechSpot, September 29, 2026; RT Ultra plus Path Tracing, 4K output, Performance upscaling |
| RTX 5080 | 43 FPS | TechSpot, September 29, 2026; RT Ultra plus Path Tracing, 4K output, Performance upscaling |
| RTX 5070 Ti | 40 FPS | TechSpot, September 29, 2026; RT Ultra plus Path Tracing, 4K output, Performance upscaling |
These are benchmark averages, not native-rendered 4K figures: Performance upscaling was enabled. The cited results do not establish a universal outcome for other scenes, CPUs, drivers, settings, or later game builds. TechSpot also reported unusual performance caps and GPU-specific scaling behavior, including a ceiling in its RTX 5090 Path Tracing test that CPU utilization did not fully explain. Do not assume those observed limits apply to every system.

The same TechSpot article reported 59 FPS for the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 and 57 FPS for the RTX 5070 Ti at 1440p with Balanced upscaling. At 1080p with Quality upscaling, tested GeForce cards reached a ceiling around 61–62 FPS, while the Radeon RX 9070 XT reached 43 FPS. Those results reinforce that resolution, upscaling mode, GPU and observed performance behavior all affect a comparison; they should not be treated as a direct substitute for the 4K Performance-upscaling test.

What hardware does the 4K Path Tracing target call for?
PC Gamer’s September 29, 2026 report of the published target lists 2160p at 60 FPS with frame generation, DLSS, an RTX 5080, and either an Intel Core i9-13900K or AMD Ryzen 7 9800X3D. This is a target, not a guarantee. The report does not state which DLSS mode or frame-generation multiplier the target assumes. The RTX 5080 is therefore associated with the stated 4K Path Tracing target; it is not a minimum requirement for playing the game generally.
NVIDIA separately advertises up to 385 FPS at 4K on an RTX 5090 with DLSS 4.5, 6X Multi Frame Generation, and Ray Reconstruction. That is NVIDIA’s vendor claim for a generated frame rate and a specified generation configuration. It is not directly comparable to conventional rendered FPS or TechSpot’s averages without accounting for the different method and frame-generation setting.
How to make a useful performance comparison
Change one variable at a time and report enough detail for someone else to interpret the result. A screenshot or an FPS number without its settings can conceal major differences.
- Confirm the build and platform. State whether the test uses Remastered PC or the earlier next-gen edition; do not mix results from either with an older modded Path Tracing implementation.
- Match the scene. Use the same location, camera, weather, and time of day. For performance testing, repeat the same route or scene and allow shader compilation or asset loading to finish.
- Record graphics settings. Name the RT/PT preset and resolution, along with the upscaler and its mode. State whether frame generation is on and identify its setting when known.
- Identify the test system. Report the GPU and, where available, CPU, driver, and game build. If any of those details are unavailable, say so rather than implying the benchmark is universal.
- Report more than one number where possible. Give average FPS and low-percentile performance if measured, and distinguish rendered frames from generated frames. Do not compare those categories as though they were the same measurement.
PC and console options are not the same
The Remastered patch notes specify Path Tracing for PC. Their PlayStation feature list names Ray Tracing Mode and Performance Mode, not a PC Path Tracing toggle. The notes describe both modes as targeting 60 FPS, with up to 90 FPS on VRR-capable displays; PS5 Pro supports PSSR and VRR. These are stated targets and feature listings, not independent performance measurements.

The 2022 next-gen update’s console notes describe a different set of targets: on PS5 and Xbox Series X, Ray Tracing Mode used RTGI and ambient occlusion with dynamic resolution targeting 30 FPS, while Performance Mode targeted 60 FPS. The Xbox Series S had no ray-tracing features in those notes. These historical figures should not be presented as Remastered console benchmark results.
Why older ray-tracing results may not match
Ray tracing has involved quality-versus-performance choices even in the earlier next-gen version. CD PROJEKT RED’s Patch 4.01 added a PC RTGI performance mode that prioritized frame rate over range and precision, and said console RTGI was optimized. That is useful context for interpreting older RT comparisons, but it does not establish the behavior or performance of Remastered Path Tracing.
The Remastered update is fresh: the official patch page lists October 1 hotfixes, while TechSpot’s cited GPU benchmark dates to September 29, 2026. No post-hotfix retest is established here, so the launch-period results should not be represented as measurements of the hotfixed build.
Quick Recap
Which setting should you use?
- Try Path Tracing if you have the performance headroom and want to judge its lighting and reflections on your own display. Compare the same scene against RT rather than assuming the newer option is automatically preferable.
- Choose RT or raster settings if Path Tracing prevents you from reaching your preferred frame rate or if you prefer the appearance of the alternatives.
- Use the benchmark as a reference, not a buying rule. The cited 4K figures involve specific GPUs and Performance upscaling; results can change with the system, scene, preset, upscaling, and build.
