To win at Gwent in The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt, manage your opening hand across all three rounds, read card abilities before playing, and pass when another card is not worth spending. You win the match by taking two rounds—not by building the highest total in a single round.
How Gwent works in The Witcher 3
Two players take turns playing cards. At the end of a round, the player with the higher total unit strength wins it; the first player to win two rounds wins the match. That makes each card a resource to spend toward the match, not simply a way to increase the current round’s score.

At the start of a game, you draw ten cards and may redraw up to two. Ordinarily, you do not get a fresh hand each round, so cards you spend now are unavailable later. The official Gwent manual advises players to reserve cards for later and notes that passing can be the best strategy.

Manage your hand across the match
Do not empty your hand to win a close round
A narrow win can be costly if it leaves you with too few useful cards for the next round. Before committing another card, consider not only whether it helps you win this round, but also what you will still hold if the opponent keeps playing. The opening hand is normally your supply for the match.

Pass when the next card is a poor trade
Passing ends your participation in that round. Your opponent may continue playing cards until they pass, so passing does not immediately end the round for both players. It can make sense when you have secured the round, or when overtaking would consume more of your hand than the likely benefit justifies. There is no universal strength threshold: the right choice depends on the current score, your cards, and the rounds still to come.
Read the abilities before you play
Strength is only part of a card’s value. The manual describes several abilities that can change your hand, the board, or the value of playing cards together:
Rank #2
- COMPETE IN ICONIC WITCHER STORIES: Step into the shoes of legendary characters like Geralt, Yennefer, Ciri, Vesemir, or Dandelion, and retell epic tales from the Witcher universe.
- TABLEAU-BUILDING STRATEGY: Build your card tableau using unique character abilities and tactical decisions to influence the story’s direction and outcome.
- GROUP DECISIONS WITH INDIVIDUAL GLORY: The actions of all players shape the story, but only one can be remembered as the true hero at the end of the game.
- DEEP STRATEGIC GAMEPLAY FOR 1-5 PLAYERS: Designed for 1 to 5 players, the game offers competitive play with high replayability through various story paths.
- DELUXE EDITION WITH PREMIUM COMPONENTS: This edition features high-quality cards and artwork, perfect for Witcher fans and tabletop game enthusiasts.
- Spy: Gives its owner two cards while adding the Spy’s strength to the opponent’s side. Weigh the card draw against the strength you give your opponent; it is not free strength.
- Medic: Replays a non-Hero Unit Card from your discard pile. Check what is in the discard pile and remember that Heroes and Special Cards are not eligible.
- Muster: Brings matching cards—those with the same name or type, as specified by the card—from your deck. Consider what matching cards remain before using it.
- Tight Bond: Doubles the strength of paired units with the same name. The ability is most valuable when you can play the matching cards together, so check your hand before separating them across rounds.
Card text takes precedence if it conflicts with a general rule in the manual. Read the wording on the card you are playing rather than assuming every card or version works identically.
Use weather effects with the affected row in mind
In the manual, weather cards reduce the strength of units in a specific row: Biting Frost affects close-combat units, Impenetrable Fog affects ranged units, and Torrential Rain affects siege units. Clear Weather cancels weather effects. Check the in-game card text for the version you are playing, and consider which rows are actually populated before spending a weather card.
Choose a faction for its passive, not a supposed ranking
The manual documents these faction abilities for the videogame:
| Faction | Ability described in the manual | Strategic implication |
|---|---|---|
| Monsters | One unit remains on the board after the round. | A round can leave strength behind for the next one, making the round’s end especially relevant. |
| Nilfgaard | Wins a round that ends in a draw. | A drawn round has a different outcome for this faction. |
| Northern Realms | Draws a card after winning a round. | Winning a round also affects card supply, not just the score. |
| Scoia’tael | Chooses who plays first. | Starting order is part of the faction’s strategic choice. |
These passives create different incentives, but the cited rules do not establish a universally best faction. Pick based on the ability you want to plan around and the cards available to you.

Keep deck size and card text in view
The manual warns that adding more unit cards to a deck lowers the chance of drawing its best cards at the beginning of the game. When choosing what to include, weigh the benefit of extra options against the chance of opening without the cards you most want. The exact effect depends on the deck; the manual does not give a win-rate or a universal ideal deck size.

The same manual presents general rules, but says that card text takes precedence when it contradicts them. This matters when a specific card’s wording differs from a broad rule description: follow the card in play.

In-game Gwent and the physical card game are separate
Gwent: The Legendary Card Game is a physical tabletop product, not a purchase required to play the minigame in The Witcher 3. CD PROJEKT RED describes it as a physical printing of the card game with five factions in its August 2025 announcement. That product page does not establish the precise videogame passive for Skellige, so its tabletop description should not be used to infer how the faction works in the videogame.
