Start Equine Phantoms at Pinastri’s Hermitage in Toussaint, northeast of Dun Tynne Crossroads. Investigate the hut and grounds, then drink Pinastri’s graytop brew to see the specter and speak with Roach. Stay with the sequence after drinking: abandoning it can fail the quest. The final choice is whether Roach forgives the dead knight or Geralt fights him for an Umbra trophy.
Where to start Equine Phantoms
Find Pinastri at her hermitage northeast of Dun Tynne Crossroads in Toussaint. She says an invisible specter has been tormenting her and offers potatoes rather than coin. You can accept, help without payment, or haggle. If you try to haggle and then agree to help for free, that also counts toward the Proof of Generosity condition for There Can Be Only One. The suggested level is 44 in the quest listing; it is a guide recommendation, not a mandatory level gate.

How to investigate the haunting
- Search the hut and its surroundings. Use Witcher Senses to find dead moths outside, a note and graytop on the table, and a bloodied pillow. The note may be optional depending on the order in which you inspect clues.
- Follow the blood trail. Track it through the small window until it ends; Geralt’s medallion will detect magic there.
- Speak to Pinastri again. When you are ready to continue, drink the common graytop brew she offers. It lets Geralt perceive the specter and talk with Roach.
Drinking the brew commits you to the next part of the sequence: leaving the area or abandoning the investigation afterward can fail the quest. Continue rather than wandering off.

Help Roach examine the area, then mount up when she identifies the umbra. The chase is scripted to lead to Mont Crane Cemetery; it is not a chance to catch the creature. At the cemetery, defeat the four panther apparitions and examine the grave. The knight’s spirit explains that, in anger, he killed his horse and remains because Pinastri has not forgiven him.

Should Roach forgive the knight or should Geralt fight?
This decision trades a lasting resolution for optional loot. It does not change the fact that you complete the cemetery encounter, but it changes what happens to the haunting and whether you can obtain the Umbra trophy.

The forgiveness route has no exclusive equipment reward identified in the quest guides. Choose it for the clean story resolution; choose the fight if you want the trophy and accept the consequences for Pinastri.

Rewards and return to Pinastri
Return to Pinastri after resolving the cemetery encounter. The walkthrough lists 150 XP for completing the quest. Pinastri can also give 60 potatoes, depending on the earlier payment agreement; the potatoes are separate from the XP reward. Fighting the knight is the route tied to the Umbra trophy.
