Potions and bombs provide consumable doses, oils coat weapons for enemy categories, and decoctions trade toxicity capacity for powerful, long-lasting effects.
How alchemy works
Alchemy does not require memorizing every recipe. The panel shows formulas you know and the materials each one needs, so you can check a recipe before gathering ingredients. The game’s tutorial walks Geralt through brewing Thunderbolt to prepare for the griffin and uses Cat as an example of a potion for seeing in darkness.

- Learn or find a formula. The game starts you with some recipes; others can be found or purchased. Their sources vary, so check individual formula information rather than assuming every recipe comes from a shop or a quest.
- Gather the listed ingredients. Plants, herbs, mushrooms, and other wild growth supply materials, while enemies can yield useful remains and, in some cases, rare mutagens.
- Open the Alchemy panel and select a known formula. Review the displayed ingredient requirements and create the item when you have what it needs. If a material is missing, an available shopkeeper may let you buy it directly through the crafting interface.
Because requirements are visible in the panel, there is no need to collect every ingredient indiscriminately. Check the formula for the item you actually want to make.
Choose the alchemy item for the problem
| Item | What it helps with | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Potions | Geralt’s condition or a temporary combat or exploration benefit | Choose for a specific need and account for toxicity. |
| Oils | Weapon preparation against a particular enemy category | Identify the enemy type and apply the corresponding oil. |
| Decoctions | A powerful, long-lasting effect that supports a build | They cost substantial toxicity capacity, leaving less room for other potions. |
| Bombs | Area effects against enemies; some are also useful for destroying monster nests | Bombs are consumables, so keep track of their stock. |
Potions: match the effect to the situation
Potions offer temporary or situational help. Thunderbolt is an offensive preparation in the griffin tutorial, while Cat is presented as a way to see in darkness. Other familiar examples include Swallow for vitality regeneration and White Honey for clearing toxicity and lingering potion effects.
#1 Best Overall
Read each potion’s description and choose it for the encounter or problem ahead. There is no universally best potion: its value depends on your build, the enemy, and the difficulty you are playing.
Oils: prepare for an enemy category
Oils are weapon coatings rather than doses that Geralt drinks. Check the Bestiary to identify an enemy’s category, then select an oil intended for that type. This makes oils most useful when you know what you are about to fight.

A 2021 Steam community guide describes oils as remaining available after their first creation: you can apply them again as needed, rather than replenishing their stock through meditation. The same guide discusses damage bonuses, but those figures should not be treated as universal current values; balance can depend on game version, difficulty, and abilities.

Decoctions: long-lasting effects with a toxicity tradeoff
Decoctions are brewed using mutagens and can provide powerful, long-lasting effects. Their substantial toxicity cost limits how many other potions Geralt can use before toxicity affects vitality. Think of a decoction as a build or encounter choice that uses some of your capacity for other alchemy effects, not as a free extra benefit.
Rank #3
Mutagens come from monsters, and some are rare. Whether a particular decoction is worth that ingredient and toxicity cost depends on your active abilities, mutation setup, and the fight ahead. The game tutorial establishes the long-lasting effect and toxicity tradeoff, but does not provide a basis here for a universal duration or fixed recommended loadout.

Potions and bombs have consumable doses. The tutorial says meditation replenishes their stock automatically when Geralt has hard alcohol. Oils can be applied repeatedly after they are made; their coating action should not be confused with using up potion or bomb doses. The tutorial also describes oils as something that can run out, while the community guide distinguishes their persistent availability after creation. In practical terms, reapply an oil as needed, but expect meditation to restore potion and bomb stock.

A simple preparation routine
- Identify the need. Decide whether you need to heal or gain a utility effect, prepare for a known enemy type, support a build with a decoction, or use an area-effect bomb.
- Check the relevant description or Bestiary entry. Use the potion description for its effect and the Bestiary to determine an enemy category for oils.
- Review the recipe in the Alchemy panel. Confirm the ingredients before collecting or buying anything.
- Account for replenishment and toxicity. Meditate with hard alcohol available to restore potion and bomb stock; leave enough toxicity capacity if you plan to combine potions with a decoction.
