If the timeout is retryable and a retry recreates the same stalled condition, the session can time out repeatedly and remain busy. The critical test is not whether the timer fired, but whether the error path reaches cleanup and a visible terminal state.
Why can a watchdog timeout still leave a session hanging?
A timeout detects that work has exceeded a limit; it does not, by itself, settle that work. In the failure pattern described by Anthony Garces in his September 25, 2026 Ranex article, a provider stream stops producing, the watchdog fires, and the runner classifies the error as retryable. The next attempt restarts the same stream under the same conditions, stalls again, and triggers another timeout. The turn may continue cycling instead of ending.

Garces puts the retry problem this way: “If retry recreates the failure condition, retry is a hang with better logging.” A retry is useful only when another attempt has a meaningful chance to avoid the condition that caused the failure. For a timeout that cannot recover through retry, the article says SLICE-012 made both watchdog failures typed, non-retryable errors.

Why use both idle and absolute timeouts?
They bound different kinds of waiting. An idle deadline catches silence during a response; an absolute budget bounds the entire consumer, even if it keeps receiving chunks. The Ranex article describes both controls and emphasizes testing them separately: a single stalled-stream test can only show which limit happened to fire first.
| Control | What it bounds | What to test |
|---|---|---|
| Idle deadline | A quiet interval between chunks; it resets when a chunk arrives. | Emit a chunk, then stop the stream long enough to exceed the idle limit. |
| Absolute budget | The total time spent consuming the response, including a stream that continues to emit chunks. | Keep a stream active past the whole-turn budget and verify that it ends. |
These controls also need to avoid cutting off legitimate work. In the implementation described by Garces, inter-chunk gaps are typically on the order of 10–100 ms, while a reasoning model may take minutes to produce its first token. Those figures describe the article’s implementation, not a universal benchmark.

Does an idle timeout cover time to first token?
No—not in the implementation described in the article. The first pull is deliberately outside the idle deadline because waiting for an initial token is a different case from waiting between chunks. A provider that accepts a connection but never sends any chunk is therefore bounded by the absolute budget instead. The article says that budget can be up to 30 minutes at the described default; it is not a general timeout setting for other systems.

Garces identifies a separate first-chunk budget as the appropriate missing control, but says it was left out of the slice. In practice, timeout coverage should distinguish three waits rather than treating them as one:

- 4. With Desktop software, It can precise monitoring the program as your need. Better than no software version.
- 5. Reboot timeout time 10-1270 seconds. You can set up it as your need.
- First response: how long the caller waits for the first chunk.
- Inter-chunk silence: how long the stream may go quiet after it has started.
- Total duration: how long the complete turn may run.
A system can have an effective inter-chunk watchdog and an overall cap while still permitting a very long wait for the initial response. That remaining case should be an explicit policy decision, not an assumption that the idle timeout covers it.
What happened to tool work when the watchdog failed?
The reported cleanup path was tied to interrupts, while watchdog expiry returned a typed error. Because the failure types did not match, interrupt-tied cleanup did not run for watchdog errors. Dispatched streaming tool fibers could remain uncleared, and a later settlement wait could keep the turn open.

- Resets the device if no activity detected for 33 minutes

- Single-wire control (RS-232 line or digital control pin)
The article’s observable for successful cleanup is more concrete than a cleanup log: the tool fiber terminates and the tool is recorded as interrupted. When a timeout occurs while tool work is in flight, a test needs to inspect those outcomes and confirm that the session itself settles.

How should a watchdog test prove the session terminates?
Test the real runner’s full failure path, not a timer in isolation. The checks below are recommendations in Garces’s article, not a claim that each was independently run here.

- [No Subscriptions] – Avoid adding another subscription you might forget about. We are the only company that offers a car GPS tracker with with no subscriptions, activation or hidden fees ever.
- [No Battery needed] - Unlike most trackers that need to be charged every few days, this one runs directly off your vehicle's power. Device goes to sleep a few minutes after the ignition cuts off. Set it and forget it.
- [Quick Installation] - 2-wire (positive and negative) or optional 3-wire (positive, negative and ACC) installation. Does not include fuel relay or fuse.
- [Ultimate Tracking Precision] – Real-time location tracking with instant alerts, customizable geofencing, and push notifications. For vehicles, personal items, and loved ones.
- [Effortless Setup] - Track a fleet of multiple GPS devices using a single screen.
- Map timeout failures to policy. For each timeout, record its failure class and whether the runner may retry it.
- Challenge the retry condition. For every retryable failure, determine whether the next attempt changes the condition that failed. If not, verify that a timeout which cannot recover is terminal and is not retried.
- Exercise a mid-stream stall. Run a stream that emits a chunk and then stops. Confirm that the real session reaches a terminal state without manual intervention.
- Keep a healthy stream active. Check that a legitimate slow stream is not cut off merely because the test only covers failure behavior.
- Prove each clock independently. Test inter-chunk idle expiry separately from the absolute whole-turn budget, so one cannot mask a broken other.
- Cover initial response delay. Test time to first chunk separately from inter-chunk silence and total duration; in the described implementation, first-chunk waiting falls back to the absolute budget.
- Inspect in-flight tool cleanup. Trigger the watchdog while tool work is running and verify actual fiber termination and the recorded interrupted state, then confirm settlement completes.
- Change the timeout at runtime. Use a non-default value and show that behavior changes accordingly, rather than relying only on the default path.
The key pass condition is an end-to-end terminal state after a stalled operation. Seeing a timeout event is only evidence that detection worked.
What did SLICE-012 establish—and what did it not?
The Ranex article reports that SLICE-012 closed on August 7, 2026, with all nine criteria met, and landed as commit 23d6a5b4ee in anthonykewl20/ranex-harness. The Ranex homepage describes the project as open-source code validation for AI-assisted development.
This result is scoped to Ranex’s harness. The article describes Ranex as pre-release and says much of the broader system is designed rather than built; the reported slice is not evidence that Ranex is ready for general use or that every surrounding system has the same protections.
