The Smart TV Features Worth Turning Off, and What Each One Actually Changes

Turning off smart TV viewing-recognition, ad-tracking and energy-saving settings changes different things. Here is what each control covers, where brands put it, and what you may give up.

Turning off a smart TV’s viewing-recognition, ad-tracking, or automatic energy-saving settings can meaningfully reduce what the set reports and how it behaves. But each switch covers a different behavior, and none of them is a single master off-button. This guide explains what each control does, where brands place it, and what you may lose or gain, so you can change only the settings you actually want changed.

This guide does not document one particular TV or a before-and-after measurement from a specific set. The menu names and paths below come from manufacturer support pages and depend on your brand, model, software version, and region.

Three settings that account for most of the “smart” tracking

Most smart TVs bundle three separate behaviors under vague labels. Keeping them apart is the key to making a sensible change.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Automatic Content Recognition (ACR) is a viewing-recognition feature on at least some platforms. It identifies what is on screen, including content from antenna and connected inputs, so the TV can report viewing.
  • Ad tracking and ad personalization controls whether the platform tailors advertising using viewing or device information. It is a separate switch from ACR on platforms that offer both.
  • Automatic brightness and energy saving lowers the picture level or changes power behavior to reduce electricity use. It does not collect data, but it changes what you see.

Why one toggle does not cover everything

Turning off one privacy control may leave other collection and advertising in place. VIZIO documents this distinction directly. Its Viewing Data control can be opted out of in the TV settings, while Limited Ad Tracking is a separate setting. VIZIO says ads remain on screen when tailored advertising is limited, and app partners may still tailor their own ads. If your goal is less tracking, check both controls and the apps you use most, because the TV-level switch will not govern every app’s advertising.

Settings by brand

Labels and menus change between brands, between model years, and between software versions. The table summarizes what the manufacturers’ support material says at the time of writing. Where a manufacturer does not state a value, the cell says so rather than guessing.

Samsung Viewing Information Services (ACR) When enabled, ACR generates signatures and may collect viewing history, device identifiers, and IP address Not stated on Samsung’s general support page; search your model’s Settings and privacy options Not stated

Samsung: Viewing Information Services

Samsung calls ACR Viewing Information Services and says the feature is optional, so it can be enabled or disabled in the TV’s settings. Its general support page does not give one menu path that applies to every model. Start in the Settings menu, look for privacy or viewing-information options, and read the on-screen notice before you accept or decline.

Roku TV: Smart TV Experience

On Roku TVs, the relevant control is labeled Smart TV Experience. Roku’s documentation says you can disable it at Settings > Privacy > Smart TV Experience. While the setting is active, Roku describes viewing data being collected across antenna and connected inputs. Roku’s documentation also describes possible sharing of that data for measurement purposes, so read that section if sharing matters to you.

VIZIO: Viewing Data and ad tracking

VIZIO handles the two controls separately. The Viewing Data opt-out is in the TV settings. The ad control’s menu path depends on the generation of your TV:

  • After 2024: Menu > Privacy & Legal > Advertising > Limited Ad Tracking
  • Before 2024: Menu > Admin & Privacy > Advertising > Limited Ad Tracking
  • Before 2020: Menu > System > Reset & Admin > Advertising > Limited Ad Tracking

VIZIO’s advertising FAQ describes behavior under particular account and firmware conditions, so confirm your model and firmware before assuming the result.

LG: privacy agreements and ACR

LG says users may withdraw from its privacy agreements and turn off ACR in the settings. It also says that essential functions may remain available after you disable optional data-driven services in supported markets. Which optional services exist, and what happens when you decline them, depends on your market and service. Read each prompt as it appears rather than relying on a path from another model.

What the independent ACR testing found

A published academic study looked at ACR traffic on Samsung and LG televisions. It found ACR network traffic in the tested cases involving linear TV and HDMI use. In those tests, the opt-out stopped traffic to ACR servers. The researchers also reported differences by country and by input or app scenario. Treat the result as evidence about the tested platforms and conditions, not as a guarantee that every TV, country, or input behaves the same way.

The vendor statements and the independent findings answer different questions. Samsung’s support page says, “Samsung does not record or watch any of the content displayed on your Smart TV,” and describes ACR signatures and viewership information as optional features. That is the company’s own description. The academic test is an outside check of traffic behavior, and it is narrower in scope.

Automatic brightness and energy saving

Energy-saving features are the one group here that changes the picture you see. LG’s support material says “The screen brightness can change depending on the active Energy Saving,” and notes that picture mode may also affect brightness.

  • LG (specified 2021 and 2022 webOS versions): All Settings > General > OLED Care > Device Self Care > Energy Saving Steps
  • LG (webOS 5.0): All Settings > Picture > Energy Saving
  • Samsung: Settings > General > Power and Energy Saving. Samsung says several power options reduce energy use by adjusting brightness.

Turning these options off is a preference trade-off. You keep the brightness you chose, but the TV may use more power. If you dim the picture manually, check whether the energy-saving option is overriding your setting.

What may stop working

LG says essential functions can remain after you disable optional data-driven services, but it does not list every feature that could change. Expect content recommendations, personalized home-screen suggestions, and some app-partner ads to be the most likely casualties. Basic playback, apps, and inputs are generally not affected by the viewing-data switches described above. Confirm with your own model’s prompts, because the exact outcome depends on brand, software, and market.

A checklist for reviewing your TV

  1. Note your brand, model number, and software version from the TV’s support or About screen.
  2. Open the privacy or viewing-information control named in the table for your brand and decide whether ACR or viewing data should be off.
  3. Open the advertising control and set limited ad tracking if you want it. Remember that app partners may still tailor their own ads.
  4. Open the energy-saving menu and choose whether automatic brightness should stay on.
  5. Check each streaming app’s own privacy and ad settings, since those sit outside the TV-level switches.
  6. Use the TV for a day and note any feature that stopped working you actually miss, then re-enable only that setting if needed.

None of these steps requires a new device, a streaming stick, or a router.

Historical context: the VIZIO settlement

A paper hosted by the Federal Trade Commission, dated 2019, reports that VIZIO paid $2.2 million to settle charges related to collecting viewing data without users’ knowledge or consent. That is past enforcement history rather than a description of current VIZIO practices, and it is one reason the Viewing Data and ad settings are worth checking on any set you own.

The Bottom Line

Turn off ACR or viewing data if you do not want the TV reporting what you watch, limit ad tracking separately if you want less tailored advertising, and treat automatic brightness as a comfort-versus-power decision. Check your exact model’s menus, because the same label can mean something different on another brand or software version.
