Then use the matching check: verify requirements and graphics drivers, test loading without custom content, and reserve Mac cache steps for Mac-specific problems. These are diagnostic steps, not guaranteed cures.
Start with the crash stage
Record what happens immediately before the game closes or stops responding. The distinction helps you choose a test rather than guessing at a cause.

- Before the launcher opens: note your operating system, game edition or launcher, installed expansions, and any recent game or driver changes.

EA recommends checking that the computer meets the minimum requirements for the base game and the most recently installed expansion, and keeping graphics drivers up to date. See EA’s Sims 3 troubleshooting guidance and its published product requirements.

EA’s product page lists legacy minimums: 1 GB RAM for Windows XP, 1.5 GB for Windows Vista or Windows 7, 7.1 GB of disk space plus 1 GB additional space for custom content and saved games, and a 128 MB video card supporting Pixel Shader 2.0. These are the requirements EA publishes for the game, not a statement that those older operating systems remain supported by Microsoft or that a modern computer is guaranteed to run the game correctly.
If play is slow or choppy, adjust graphics
EA presents these as performance adjustments, not a guaranteed crash fix:

- Open Options in the game, or press F5.
- Lower the graphics detail sliders, then save the changes.
- Try windowed mode and see whether performance changes.
EA’s PC troubleshooting section also says to check that Advanced Rendering is switched on. It is a setting to check, not a universal remedy for crashes.
If the game crashes while loading, test without custom content
EA warns that custom content can cause The Sims 3 to crash while loading. Test that possibility before removing content permanently:

- Exit the game and restart the launcher.
- Open Installed Content and choose Run without custom content.
- Try to load the game again.
- If it loads successfully, restore content in small, individually identifiable batches—or one item at a time—and retry until the problem returns. Remove the item that reproduces the crash.
A successful load with custom content disabled is evidence that the content may be involved; the test does not prove the cause until you can reproduce the problem after restoring an item.
Mac-only checks for graphics or cache problems
EA’s support page places these instructions under Mac troubleshooting. Do not apply Mac Finder file instructions to a Windows installation.

Check graphics switching and energy settings
On some Macs with integrated and dedicated graphics, EA recommends choosing Higher Performance in Energy Saver options if available, and considering turning off automatic graphics switching.

For problems associated with corrupted saves or custom content, EA names these cache files: CASPartCache.package, compositorCache.package, scriptCache.package, and simCompositorCache.package. It also says to remove the files in Thumbnails; the game recreates the named cache files. If the problem remains, EA suggests checking World Caches and removing custom content or mods after backing them up. These steps are specific troubleshooting guidance, not a universal crash fix.

Persistent Windows crashes: collect diagnostic evidence
If the first checks do not identify a cause, an EA Forums responder suggests using Windows Reliability Monitor and testing with a clean Sims 3 user folder. This is community advice, not an official EA guarantee.
- Press Windows key + R, enter
perfmon /rel, and press Enter to open Reliability Monitor. - Find the time of the crash and inspect the technical details for the recorded event. Keep the details with your notes; without the event and system information, it is not possible to infer a specific fault from the crash alone.
- Close the game. Temporarily move the
Sims 3folder out ofDocuments/Electronic Arts, then launch the game to test with a clean folder. Keep the original folder intact so you can restore it after the test.
If the crash stops with a clean folder, compare the original folder’s contents and configuration rather than assuming a particular file is responsible. The forum discussion describes these as diagnostic steps, not a guaranteed resolution: EA Forums discussion.
