A green result on a scratch or remote server proves only that a particular job passed in the environment where it ran. Before merging, replay the patch on the runner that owns the repository’s merge decision and require that runner’s checks to pass. The key question is whether the reviewed change was tested against the right repository files, dependency state, and test suite—not simply whether some server reported success.
What a green result does—and does not—tell you
A passing status is evidence about the job that produced it: its checkout, installed dependencies, configuration, and executed checks. It does not by itself establish that the exact patch was replayed against the target repository or tested with the dependency state that repository expects.

The exact-title DEV Community article puts the practical question this way: “Did those agent tests even use your lockfile?” It follows with: “If you cannot answer, you cannot merge yet.” Those are useful prompts, not a claim that every project has a lockfile. If your repository pins dependencies another way, verify that mechanism instead.

What a local gate must establish
A useful gate connects the change under review to the checks that decide whether it can be merged. It should make these points verifiable:
- Patch identity: the change being checked is the reviewed patch, replayed in the intended repository rather than an unrelated or stale checkout.
- Repository and dependency state: the checks use the target repository’s files and its expected dependency inputs, including its lockfile when it has one.
- Reproducibility: the same gate can run in the project’s CI environment, rather than depending on an undocumented local-only step.
- Relevant checks: the commands actually cover the risks the team wants to control before merge or release.
A marker file can record that a replay was intended or performed, but its presence is not proof by itself. The process that creates and verifies the marker must be trustworthy and tied to the patch and checkout being tested.

How to adapt the article’s example gate
The cited article shows a recipe, not a universal CI platform. Its example requires .agent/origin.json, inspects a replayed_locally value, refuses success unless CI is true, then runs git diff --check and pytest -q. Those choices illustrate a sequence; use your repository’s actual marker format, CI conventions, and test commands.
- Record replay provenance. Require the expected origin record and validate that it identifies the patch and repository state your process expects. Decide who or what is allowed to create it; do not accept an unverified marker as evidence.
- Make the gate run in CI. Require the environment’s CI signal if the check is meant to be a merge gate. Confirm that the protected branch or merge policy actually requires this job; a script that runs successfully but is optional does not block an unsafe merge.
- Check patch hygiene. Run
git diff --checkor the repository’s equivalent to catch whitespace errors and conflict-marker issues detectable by that command. It is not a substitute for compilation, tests, or review. - Run the project’s tests. The article’s example uses
pytest -q; use that only if it is the correct test suite for your project. Include required setup and dependency installation so CI tests the intended code and dependency state. - Fail closed on missing evidence. Missing provenance, an unexpected checkout, failed setup, or a failing check should produce a failed gate—not a green result with a warning that can be ignored.
Before adopting the example, specify how the patch is replayed, how repository identity is checked, how dependencies are installed, which lockfile or equivalent is authoritative, and which tests are required. The exact commands and controls depend on the repository and the risk of the merge.

Choose the gate for the merge decision
A development scratch environment is useful for drafts and fast feedback. The exact-title article advises treating the remote box as a place for drafts rather than releases. That is a useful default distinction, not a universal release policy: teams should set their merge and release controls to match their threat model and delivery setup.
For a low-risk change, a reproducible CI job may be the necessary gate. A higher-risk change may warrant additional checks or review. In either case, define what must pass and ensure the merge system enforces it; a green indicator is meaningful only within the policy and evidence behind it.

Do not confuse this advice with the Scratch product
Scratch’s documentation describes a specific workflow for building and publishing static websites with Markdown and React: scratch dev starts development with hot reload, scratch build creates production output in dist/, and scratch preview serves that built output locally. That workflow is product-specific background; it does not turn a remote development result into validation of a separate repository’s merge.
Scratch’s official documentation labels the hosted service as in Preview and warns, “Preview warning: Scratch is in preview. Don’t use it for anything sensitive or critical.” It also says hosted projects expire after 30 days during Preview. Those cautions and the expiration term apply to Scratch’s hosted service, not to scratch servers generally.
Before you merge
- Can you identify the exact patch and target repository that the passing job checked?
- Can you show that the expected dependency inputs were used?
- Does the required CI gate run the project’s relevant checks and fail when evidence is missing?
- Does the repository’s merge policy require that gate to pass?
If any answer is unknown, the remote green result is not enough to establish that the patch passed the target repository’s gate.
