The Royal Writ is a single-player roguelike deckbuilder built around an unusual decision: send your animal units forward to damage the enemy, knowing that a unit reaching the opposing base before you win can be lost for the rest of the run. Its lane-based battles reward positioning and adaptation, but the card-loss risk and situational synergies may make it less satisfying for players who prefer reliable builds.
How The Royal Writ plays
The game’s official Steam description sums up its central idea: “In The Royal Writ, you don’t just play cards – you command them on the battlefield.” Rather than treating cards only as effects played from a hand, it represents units on a battlefield and sends them forward through one to three lanes toward the enemy base.

Position matters. Column modifiers affect damage calculations, while terrain can help or hinder units as they advance. A unit that reaches the enemy base before the fight is won may be permanently removed from your deck for the remainder of that run. That makes each push a trade-off: deal damage now, or preserve a useful card for later battles.
A tactical choice with a lasting consequence
Permanent loss gives the battle system its sharpest edge. Sacrificing a unit can be the right move if it creates a path to victory, but losing a strong card can also weaken the rest of a run. The mechanic links combat positioning to deck management in a way that feels distinct from simply choosing which card to play next.

The game presents its battles through a cast of peculiar, battle-hardened animals, with a storybook visual frame and dark humor. That contrast between cute characters and the possibility of permanent unit loss is part of its identity. The publisher describes the tone and content; how well the humor and presentation land is a matter of individual taste.
What reviewers think
TheXboxHub’s October 2, 2026 review praised the originality of the lane combat and permanent card-loss design, but found that cards and relics could feel situational and that the game did not hold the reviewer’s interest over a longer period. The outlet scored it 3.5/5. That is one reviewer’s assessment, not an aggregate rating.

Who is most likely to enjoy it?
- Consider it if you want a deckbuilder where positioning, battlefield movement and the risk of losing units shape each encounter.
- Be cautious if you prefer predictable card synergies, dislike permanent losses within a run, or need a game to sustain repeated play over a long stretch.
- Expect a learning curve. The publisher calls the gameplay intuitive, but TheXboxHub reviewer describes layers of systems. That difference reflects individual experience; it is sensible to expect some adaptation as you learn how lanes, modifiers and preservation interact.

Verdict: Is The Royal Writ worth playing?
The Royal Writ stands out because its battles make card preservation part of the immediate tactical problem: advancing can bring you closer to victory, but it can also cost you a unit for the rest of the run. Two campaigns, changing encounters and an offbeat presentation provide a foundation for variety. The trade-off is that situational cards and relics, a learning curve and uncertain long-term appeal may not suit everyone. If lane tactics and consequential choices are your kind of deckbuilding, it is a distinctive option; if you want steady synergies and low-risk play, its central mechanic may be a drawback.
