Hugh Glass survives his final confrontation with John Fitzgerald after Fitzgerald kills Glass’s son, Hawk. But the film does not frame revenge as a clean victory: its last image leaves Glass’s emotional and spiritual state unresolved. The historical Hugh Glass survived a bear mauling and abandonment, but the son and revenge killing belong to the film, not the established historical account.
What happens to Hugh Glass at the end of The Revenant?
Glass catches up with Fitzgerald and confronts him for murdering Hawk. The encounter resolves the film’s revenge plot, but it does not restore the family Glass has lost or erase the violence that carried him through the wilderness.

The closing image holds on Glass looking toward the camera, with his breathing audible. The movie does not state that he dies, nor does it confirm that he has found peace. His breath can suggest simple physical survival, but it also recalls the film’s insistence that a person should keep fighting while still able to breathe. That connection is one interpretation of the ending, not a single definitive answer. Den of Geek’s 2016 ending analysis discusses the breathing motif.

What does the final look mean?
The ending leaves room for several readings: Glass may be exhausted, changed by his ordeal, burdened by what he has done, or still caught in the cycle of violence. The film’s spiritual dimension supports a sense of transformation without telling viewers exactly what that transformation means.

- After a 19th-century fur trapper gets mauled by a grizzly bear, he's robbed and left for dead by his companions. He survives and seeks revenge on them.
Director Alejandro González Iñárritu described the film as a spiritual drama and Glass’s journey as one of survival and transcendence. He saw Glass becoming “a man, a beast, a saint, a martyr, a spirit,” as reported in The Guardian’s 2016 interview. That framing helps explain why the last shot feels larger than the outcome of a fight, but it does not settle Glass’s exact state of mind.
How does the film ending differ from Hugh Glass’s story?
The film uses a real survival episode as its starting point, then reshapes it into a personal revenge story. Accounts of the historical Glass do not establish the plot involving Hawk or a revenge killing of Fitzgerald.

| Element | In the film | In the historical account |
|---|---|---|
| Bear attack and abandonment | Glass is mauled and left behind during the expedition. | Glass was mauled by a grizzly during an 1823 fur-trading expedition and survived after being abandoned. The Guardian, 2016 |
| Hawk | Glass’s son is murdered by Fitzgerald, giving Glass a personal reason to pursue him. | The cited historical accounts provide no evidence that Glass had the son portrayed in the film. The Hugh Glass Society |
| Fitzgerald and revenge | Glass’s confrontation with Fitzgerald brings the revenge plot to its resolution. | The Hugh Glass Society says Glass caught up with Fitzgerald but did not kill him; the historical accounts do not report the film’s revenge killing. The Hugh Glass Society |
| Season and journey | The ordeal unfolds in a sustained snowy winter landscape. | The reported trek ran from August to October, rather than through the film’s continuous winter setting. The Guardian, 2016 |
How reliable is the historical story?
The bear mauling, abandonment and survival journey have a historical basis, but the familiar account is not a first-person diary. Glass did not write the account in his own hand. A version appeared under another writer’s name in Philadelphia’s The Port Folio in 1825 and may have been embellished, according to The Guardian’s historical comparison. That makes the broad survival episode more secure than every vivid detail later attached to it.

That’s really the only historical fact—a lot of his story is built on legend.” His statement describes the film’s source material; it is not a historian’s certification of every detail.
