The Remix Chronicles: What Changed From React Router v7 to Remix 3

Bytes #396’s Remix reset was a 2025 snapshot. The project’s architecture wording and release status have since moved on, while React Router continued as a separately governed project.

“The Remix Chronicles” was the feature in Bytes #396, published May 30, 2025. Its “reset” framing captured two related but separate developments: framework capabilities associated with Remix had moved into React Router v7, while the Remix team proposed a new project that could revisit the framework’s foundations. Since then, the proposed architecture has changed, and Remix 3 has advanced from beta preview to release candidate. The newsletter is a snapshot of that moment—not a current release guide.

What Bytes #396 said about Remix

Bytes presented the announcement with a joke about handling tech debt by deleting a codebase and starting over. Its account described React Router v7 as carrying forward framework work associated with Remix, while the team’s new Remix project would take a different direction. The issue characterized that proposal as a Preact fork and highlighted ambitions including model-first development, Web APIs, fewer dependencies, composable modules, and a cohesive toolbox. Those are Bytes’ compressed descriptions of the announcement, not a complete technical specification.

The distinction matters: the newsletter was describing a proposed new Remix alongside the continued React Router project, not announcing that React Router had ended or that existing Remix applications had to move. The original issue is available in the Bytes #396 archive.

How the announcement and project status changed

Date Milestone What it establishes
May 28, 2025 Remix announces a new direction The announcement emphasizes simplicity, clarity, and performance. Its page initially described a Preact-based plan, but its current wording says the team is building its own component model. Remix’s announcement
June 5, 2025 React Router announces open governance The project describes an open governance model and continued dedicated backing. Co-creator Michael Jackson said, “React Router isn’t just mine and Ryan’s baby anymore. It is a mature OSS project with millions of dependents. We want everyone to have a say in how the project moves forward.” The post also gives the Remix team’s claim of nearly 11 million GitHub projects; that is the team’s figure, not an independently audited count. React Router governance announcement
April 30, 2026 Remix 3 beta preview Remix labeled this a pre-release beta preview, said it was not production ready at that point, and invited feedback. Its described scope extended across routing, request handling, sessions, authentication, forms, uploads, assets, data, and UI. Remix 3 beta preview announcement
August 2026 Remix 3 release candidate The team announced an RC after gathering feedback from early adopters, describing capabilities including database management, schema validation, routing, asset serving, and a UI runtime. An RC is later than the beta preview, but the announcement alone does not establish general production readiness. Remix 3 release candidate announcement

What Remix 3’s direction means—and does not mean

Remix’s current API documentation describes Remix 3 as built on Web APIs and JavaScript and sets out the project’s principles. Model-first development and a more cohesive, composable toolkit are design aims; they should not be mistaken for independently measured performance or proof that Remix 3 is superior to another framework. The documentation is at Remix’s API site.

The Preact-fork description belongs to the initial proposal. The announcement page’s later wording says the team is building its own component model, so it would be inaccurate to present the original fork plan as the current architecture. The available milestones also show a change in maturity—from a beta preview explicitly called not production ready in April to an RC announced in August—without establishing that the RC is a stable production release.

React Router or Remix 3: what should a team evaluate?

The history is not itself a migration recommendation. The source announcements establish different project directions and milestones, but they do not provide a complete migration guide or an independent ecosystem-compatibility benchmark. Teams should make a decision against their own application and requirements rather than infer that one project replaces the other.

Decision factor React Router Remix 3
Project continuity and governance Continued as a distinct project, with an open governance model announced in June 2025. A new direction announced in May 2025; the cited announcements do not establish equivalent governance details.
Foundation The 2025 framing described React Router v7 as carrying forward framework work associated with Remix. The project describes Remix 3 as built on Web APIs and JavaScript; its current announcement wording says it is developing its own component model.
Release maturity in the cited updates The cited governance post concerns project stewardship, not a new release-maturity status. Reached beta preview in April 2026 and RC status in August 2026; the cited RC announcement does not certify stable production readiness.
Migration and compatibility The cited sources do not provide a migration requirement or complete compatibility assessment. The cited sources do not provide a complete migration guide or independent compatibility benchmark.

For an existing application, first identify which APIs, libraries, deployment runtime, and workflows it depends on; then verify those requirements against the current documentation for the project being considered. Treat migration effort and compatibility as application-specific until supported by a migration guide or direct validation. Nothing in these announcements establishes a requirement for existing Remix users to migrate.
