A background job can go missing at several different boundaries: before the broker accepts it, while it is waiting, during processing, or after the work finishes but before anyone records the outcome. A queue transports and tracks messages according to its configured delivery rules; it does not automatically preserve the business intent behind a job or provide a complete, queryable history of whether that work succeeded.
What does a queue guarantee—and what does it not?
Think of a job as passing through a chain of responsibility: the application creates the intent, a producer publishes a message, the broker accepts and routes it, a worker receives it, the worker performs the required operation, and some part of the system records the result. Each handoff can fail or become uncertain. The symptoms include missing, delayed, duplicated, or apparently successful work.

A broker’s guarantees apply to the message path and depend on the broker, queue type, configuration, and acknowledgement behavior. They do not by themselves establish whether a payment settled, a report was saved, an email provider accepted a request, or a scheduled business task completed. For that, the application needs outcome tracking tied to the job’s identity.

If the application commits a database change and publishes a message as separate operations, one can succeed while the other fails. The broker cannot make those two application operations atomic merely by accepting the message. Decide how the application will detect and reconcile that gap; do not treat queue durability as proof that the business intent and its message were recorded together.

Where can a job disappear or appear to disappear?
It was never durably enqueued
A producer may lose its connection before learning whether the broker accepted a publish. RabbitMQ recommends publisher confirms so the producer can learn when the broker has taken responsibility, and retransmitting unconfirmed messages. But if a confirmation was sent and lost in transit, retransmission can create a duplicate. Where an unrouted publish is an error, producers also need to check routing rather than assuming that a successful network send means a consumer can receive the message. These are RabbitMQ-specific recommendations in its reliability guide.
It was accepted but not retained through a restart
“The broker accepted it” and “the message will survive every restart” are different claims. In RabbitMQ, restart resilience for important messages involves an appropriate durable or replicated queue type and persistent publishing. Queue durability and message persistence are separate configuration concerns; an exclusive queue, for example, does not survive a node restart. Check the guarantees of the actual queue type and service configuration rather than inferring durability from the fact that a message appeared in a queue.

It was delivered, but the worker did not finish
Inspect worker health, process shutdowns, timeouts, and logs, then establish when the consumer acknowledges the message. RabbitMQ describes acknowledgements as a transfer of responsibility: a consumer should acknowledge after completing the operation the application requires, such as recording the work durably or forwarding it. If it acknowledges earlier, the broker may remove the message before the application outcome is safe. If the work finishes but the acknowledgement is lost, the message can be delivered again. Neither ordering eliminates every failure mode.

At-least-once delivery means a message may be delivered again; it is not a promise of exactly-once business effects. Microsoft’s background-job guidance recommends making jobs idempotent, and RabbitMQ likewise recommends idempotent consumers for redelivery situations. Design the operation so that repeating the same job does not repeat an irreversible effect, or record a stable job or operation identifier and use it to detect prior completion.
For Amazon SQS, AWS documents a five-minute deduplication window for FIFO queues. A producer retry after that window can create another message. Separately, if a message’s visibility timeout expires before processing finishes, it can become visible to another consumer. For long-running work, configure visibility behavior to fit processing time and account for the possibility of redelivery; do not rely on the FIFO deduplication window as a permanent duplicate barrier.
It failed repeatedly, or stopped at the schedule
Retries can help with transient faults, such as a temporary dependency failure, but they do not turn a permanent error—such as malformed input—into success. Set retry limits and distinguish errors that may clear from errors that require correction. In Celery, acks_late changes acknowledgement timing; it is not the same thing as calling Task.retry, and its behavior depends on the worker pool and transport.
A scheduled job can also fail to fire without producing an obvious queue error. Compare actual run timestamps with expected schedule times. Microsoft Azure Architecture Center warns that background-task failures are silent unless operators actively monitor for them, and that a job that hangs or crashes without completion tracking can appear to run normally.

How should you trace a job that never completed?
Start with one expected job instance and follow its identifier through each boundary. If the system has no identifier or recorded state at a boundary, that absence is itself a diagnostic gap: a queue dashboard alone cannot tell you whether the business operation completed.
Best Value
- Keep track of everything from attendance to test scores
- Spiral bound
- Measures 8-1/2" x 11"
- Confirm the expected run. Record the intended schedule time and job identity, then compare them with actual start and completion timestamps. This separates a missed schedule from work that started but stalled.
- Check producer evidence. Inspect application publish errors, broker confirmation status, and routing results. In RabbitMQ, verify publisher confirms and the routing check appropriate to the exchange and queue arrangement.
- Check broker retention and delivery. Look for the message, then verify queue durability, message persistence, replication mode, and restart history against the guarantees of the configured broker service and queue type.
- Check worker execution and acknowledgement. Correlate delivery with worker logs, health, timeout, and shutdown events. Confirm that acknowledgement occurs only after the required durable operation or handoff.
- Check redelivery and duplicate effects. Inspect visibility timeout or broker redelivery behavior, and determine whether the business operation safely handles another delivery.
- Classify repeated failures. Separate transient from permanent errors, enforce a bounded retry policy, and send poison messages to a dead-letter path for investigation rather than allowing endless retries.
- Check the failure backlog. Monitor dead-letter depth and age, confirm redrive settings, and review retention and ordering consequences before replaying messages.
What should you record and alert on?
Track the lifecycle, not just queue traffic. Associate a correlation or job identifier with creation, publish, delivery, start, completion, and failure events. Record enough status to answer whether the job is pending, running, completed, or failed, and retain the failure reason operators need to act. The application’s status record should represent the business outcome; broker metrics describe the message path.
- Missed runs: compare expected schedule times with actual starts and alert when a required run does not appear.
- Stalled work: alert on jobs that start but do not reach a terminal outcome within an appropriate interval.
- Dead-letter backlog: monitor both depth and age so failed messages do not accumulate unnoticed.
- Queue delay and worker health: use these to distinguish work waiting for capacity from work that was never published or has become stuck.
Dead-letter queues are an isolation and investigation mechanism, not an automatic repair. Forwarding behavior, retry and redrive policies, retention, ordering, and resource consumption vary by system. RabbitMQ 4.3’s quorum-queue documentation says at-least-once dead-lettering must be enabled explicitly and requires a compatible overflow strategy; it uses additional resources and can produce duplicates while delivery is retried. The same RabbitMQ documentation says a publisher-confirmed quorum-queue message should not be lost as long as a majority of the hosting nodes are not permanently unavailable. Those are RabbitMQ quorum-queue statements, not general guarantees for every broker or configuration.
How do you evaluate a queue’s reliability for your job?
Compare the implementation and its configured behavior, not a product name or the word “durable.” Ask these questions before deciding whether it fits the job’s failure consequences:
| Reliability concern | What to establish |
|---|---|
| Producer confirmation | Does the producer learn when the broker accepts responsibility? What happens if the confirmation is lost, and how are uncertain publishes retried without unsafe effects? |
| Persistence and replication | What survives a process, node, or hardware restart? Are both the queue and its messages configured for the intended resilience? |
| Delivery and acknowledgement | When is a message hidden, acknowledged, deleted, or eligible for redelivery? What durable work must happen before acknowledgement? |
| Duplicate tolerance | Can an uncertain publish, timeout, or worker crash cause another delivery? Can the business effect safely be repeated? |
| Retries and poison messages | Which failures are plausibly transient, how many retries are allowed, and where do permanently failing messages go? |
| Dead-letter behavior | Can dead-letter forwarding itself retry or duplicate? What are the resource, retention, and ordering consequences, and how are messages redriven? |
| Operational visibility | Can operators see completion outcomes, missed schedules, the oldest waiting message, and dead-letter depth and age? |
There is no universal best queue in these documented examples. A system may need a broker for delivery plus application-level status records and reconciliation; another may use a managed queue with its own delivery and retention rules. Choose based on the failure modes the job must tolerate and the evidence operators need when it does not complete.
