Ask them this: What customer evidence would convince HPE and NVIDIA that their integrated AI factory delivers better outcomes than buying infrastructure and software separately—and how can customers independently verify its economics, security and performance?

That is a proposed interview question, not a report of a private conversation. It gets past the partnership’s launch language and asks for proof a buyer can test: on its own workloads, with its own data, under clearly stated costs and operating conditions.

Why this question fits the partnership

HPE and NVIDIA announced “NVIDIA AI Computing by HPE” in June 2024 as a portfolio of co-developed AI solutions and joint go-to-market integrations. The launch described HPE Private Cloud AI as an integration of NVIDIA AI computing, networking and software with HPE compute, storage and GreenLake cloud, offered in four configurations with a self-service cloud experience and lifecycle management. Those are vendor descriptions of the offering, not independent evidence of customer outcomes. HPE’s June 2024 announcement

Private Cloud AI is positioned as a pre-integrated private platform for workloads including inference, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG) and fine-tuning. HPE’s developer portal describes it as managed through GreenLake. The useful interview challenge is whether integration reduces deployment and operating friction enough to justify its costs and constraints for a particular customer—not whether integration sounds attractive in principle.

What should count as proof of better outcomes?

Ask HPE and NVIDIA to compare the integrated system with a separately assembled alternative using the same workload, data, quality target, security requirements and measurement period. Require the comparison to show both how results were obtained and what would change them.

  • Workload and quality: Name the model, inference or training task, data shape, retrieval pattern, concurrency, latency target and output-quality threshold. Ask which Private Cloud AI configuration supports that workload and what configuration changes are needed as usage grows.
  • Performance: Request reproducible measurements with the system configuration, software versions, workload settings and test conditions disclosed. Ask whether results include data preparation and storage, or only accelerator execution.
  • Economics: Request a total-cost model covering hardware, software, power, cooling, staffing, support, expected utilization and refresh cycles. Ask for assumptions and a sensitivity analysis showing what happens when utilization, energy prices or demand differ from plan.
  • Operations: Measure time and staff effort to deploy, update, troubleshoot and recover the platform. Ask which responsibilities stay with the customer and which are covered by HPE or NVIDIA support.
  • Independent verification: Ask whether the customer can reproduce the measurement, inspect the underlying configuration and retain logs or other evidence. Establish who validates the result and whether the test can use the customer’s own workload.

The reviewed announcements do not establish independent total-cost comparisons. HPE’s June 2026 release reported two vendor-described performance figures, but neither should be treated as a general promise: it attributed a 20.4× time-to-first-token improvement to a benchmark on a ProLiant DL380a Gen12 with eight NVIDIA H200 NVL GPUs and Alletra Storage MP X10000 with three controller nodes, running NVIDIA Nemotron 70B with KV-cache-aware inference optimization. It also attributed an increase of up to 20% in token throughput to internal HPE data from five standard Hugging Face leaderboard inference and fine-tuning tests across three popular LLMs on an HPE Private Cloud AI system. Ask for the test details and independent validation before applying either figure to a different system or workload. HPE’s June 2026 announcement

Which workload and scale does each configuration actually cover?

Ask for a configuration-by-configuration map of supported workloads: inference, RAG, fine-tuning, agentic AI and any training use the vendor proposes for the buyer. For each one, request the supported scale, performance target, software dependencies and the point at which the customer must move to a larger or more expensive configuration.

In March 2026, HPE said network expansion racks let Private Cloud AI scale to up to 128 GPUs. That is an announced capability for an expanded system, not a general benchmark or evidence that every workload scales efficiently to that size. Ask what topology and workloads the claim covers, what it costs to reach that scale, and which components become bottlenecks. HPE’s March 2026 announcement

What does private and air-gapped mean in practice?

“Private” and “air-gapped” are not complete security specifications. Ask the companies to diagram the data, management and support paths for the exact configuration being offered, then identify controls included in the base system and any that require additional components or services.

  • Can telemetry or diagnostic data leave the environment? What is collected, where does it go, and can the customer disable or review it?
  • How are software, firmware and model updates delivered and verified when the system has no internet connection?
  • Can vendor support access the system remotely? If so, how is access approved, limited, recorded and revoked?
  • How are tenants, users, models, tools and data isolated? What evidence can the customer inspect to verify those boundaries?
  • Which security controls apply to the offered configuration, and which depend on deployment choices, customer operations or separate products?

HPE’s June 2025 portfolio announcement described air-gapped management and multi-tenancy among Private Cloud AI capabilities; its March 2026 announcement described an air-gapped configuration for the large system. Ask what those descriptions mean for the buyer’s specific deployment rather than assuming every configuration has identical controls. HPE’s June 2025 announcement HPE’s March 2026 announcement

How does the data pipeline affect results?

AI infrastructure is only useful if data can be prepared, governed and moved to the workload in a suitable form. In May 2025, HPE described an SDK integration between Alletra Storage MP X10000 and NVIDIA AI Data Platform, intended to support unstructured-data ingestion, inference, training and continuous learning, with capabilities including vector indexing, metadata enrichment and RDMA transfers. HPE’s May 2025 announcement

Ask how those functions work with the customer’s data sources, access controls, indexing strategy and update frequency. Request measurements using the customer’s file sizes, metadata quality and retrieval patterns. Clarify where indexes and enriched metadata are stored, how permissions are enforced during retrieval, and how changes or deletions propagate through derived data. A feature list alone cannot show whether the pipeline will suit a particular estate.

How will agent governance and lifecycle changes be handled?

For agentic workloads, ask how models, tools and agent actions are approved, monitored, audited and rolled back. Establish which governance and observability functions are available now for the proposed system, which require integration with other products, and which remain future plans.

HPE’s June 2026 announcement described new agentic AI functions involving governance, monitoring, data preparation and storage, alongside a pipeline of features with availability dates extending into Q4 2026 and 2027. Those dates describe announced plans, not proof of shipment. Confirm current availability and scope for the buyer’s region and configuration. HPE’s June 2026 announcement

What can be upgraded, and what is the exit path?

Ask what can be upgraded independently—GPUs, networking, storage, software and models—and what changes require taking the whole system offline or replacing it. Request the supported upgrade sequence, dependencies, support implications and any contractual commitments behind claims of investment protection or a multi-generation path.

What is orderable now, where, and with what support?

Ask the vendor to identify the exact SKU, geography, orderability, lead time, software version, support level and dependencies in the proposal. Availability can differ by configuration and date; a portfolio announcement or future release window is not confirmation that a specific system can be ordered today. Verify the status of any announced feature that matters to the deployment, especially additions HPE placed in Q4 2026 or 2027. HPE’s June 2026 announcement

What the public statements can—and cannot—tell you

HPE and NVIDIA’s public announcements establish the scope and direction of their partnership as described by the companies. They do not establish what executives would say in a private conversation, or independently prove customer economics, real-world performance, implementation outcomes or shipment status for every announced feature.

The public rhetoric is clear: HPE CEO Antonio Neri said in March 2026, “The AI race is fundamentally about speed, scale, and trust,” while NVIDIA CEO Jensen Huang said the companies were building “AI factories and AI grids” to embed intelligence into workflows. In June 2026, Huang described AI factories for a new era of computing, powered by NVIDIA Vera CPUs, accelerated infrastructure and secure AI software. These are public vendor-announcement statements, not private opinions or evidence that a given customer will achieve a particular result. HPE’s March 2026 announcement HPE’s June 2026 announcement
