For elapsed-time timeouts, build and test the deadline using the same monotonic clock and compatible units. This is a debugging pattern, not a diagnosis of any particular incident; Python provides a clear documented example.
Why is my timeout firing too early?
First check whether the timeout is actually firing early, or whether its deadline was calculated and checked in different clock domains. Wall-clock time answers “What date and time is it?” An elapsed-time timeout asks “How much time has passed?” Those are different jobs.

Python’s official time documentation defines time.monotonic() as a clock that cannot go backwards and is not affected by system clock updates. Its reference point is undefined, so only the difference between two readings is meaningful. A monotonic value is therefore useful for measuring elapsed time, but it is not a calendar timestamp and should not be interpreted as one.
A clock mismatch can make otherwise sensible arithmetic misleading. For example, constructing a deadline from a monotonic reading and then comparing it with a wall-clock reading does not produce a meaningful comparison. The two values have different origins. A similar failure can happen when one side is in seconds and the other is in milliseconds.

Should I use wall-clock time or a monotonic clock for a timeout?
For a local timeout based on duration, use a monotonic clock. Use wall-clock time when the requirement is tied to civil time, such as “run at 09:00 UTC.” Do not substitute one for the other just because both APIs return numbers.
| Clock choice | What its value means | Effect of system clock changes | Relevant use |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wall clock / realtime | A civil date and time | Can change when the system clock is adjusted | Calendar events and timestamps |
| Monotonic | An unspecified-origin reading; differences measure elapsed time | Python documents that time.monotonic() is unaffected by system clock updates |
Local duration deadlines and timeouts |
The table describes the documented behavior relevant here; exact APIs and availability vary by operating system and runtime. Python’s reference also describes other clocks, including a performance counter and process time, but they should not be assumed to be interchangeable with a wall clock or with a scheduler’s configured clock.

How do I build and check a deadline consistently?
Use one clock source for both operations, and keep the unit consistent. In Python, a simple elapsed-time pattern is:

if time.monotonic() >= deadline:
raise TimeoutError("operation timed out")

Both the deadline and its later checks use seconds from time.monotonic(). The polling interval is only a requested sleep duration; it does not promise that the next check will run at an exact instant.

If using Python’s sched module, its documented default scheduler is sched.scheduler(timefunc=time.monotonic, delayfunc=time.sleep). The scheduler documentation says numeric event times must be compatible with the configured timefunc. If you provide a custom clock or delay function, keep the scheduled values aligned with that clock’s meaning and units.
Can changing the system clock break a timer?
It can affect a timer that is explicitly based on realtime, while monotonic timers are designed for elapsed-time measurement without being moved by system clock updates. Linux makes this distinction explicit in its timerfd interfaces: realtime timers require care if the system clock changes, while monotonic timerfd timers are unaffected by such changes. Python’s OS documentation exposes Linux timerfd APIs added in Python 3.13; those APIs are Linux- and version-specific, not a portable feature to assume on every platform.

Decide whether suspended time counts
On Linux, CLOCK_BOOTTIME behaves like CLOCK_MONOTONIC but includes time spent suspended. Choose based on the timeout’s intended semantics: if five minutes asleep should consume a five-minute timeout, a suspend-aware clock may be appropriate; if the timeout should measure only time while the system is running, that is a different requirement. Confirm the API available to your OS and runtime before implementing it.

Why can a correct deadline still be late?
Correct clock arithmetic does not guarantee that your code runs exactly when the deadline arrives. Python documents that time.sleep() can last longer than requested because of other system activity. Its scheduler documentation also notes that a scheduler falls behind when actions take longer than the time available before the next event.

Separate these two questions while debugging:
- Did the deadline calculation use one clock consistently? Check the clock API and units at both creation and comparison.
- Did the callback or polling thread run late? Compare the scheduled or requested time with when the code actually resumed and completed its work.
A delayed callback is not, by itself, evidence that the clock arithmetic is wrong. Likewise, a monotonic clock cannot make a slow callback or a heavily loaded machine run on schedule.
How to debug a poller that works locally but misses production deadlines
- Log the clock source and units. Record which clock created the deadline and which clock checked it. If the calculation uses monotonic time, a formatted wall-clock timestamp alone does not show the value that governed the timeout.
- Audit every comparison. Look for a deadline built with an elapsed-time clock but checked against realtime, or for seconds compared with milliseconds.
- Trace scheduling separately from expiration. Record when the timeout became due and when the polling loop or callback actually ran. This helps distinguish clock-domain errors from sleep or callback delays.
- Set suspend behavior deliberately on Linux. Decide whether system sleep should count toward the timeout before choosing between monotonic and suspend-aware boottime behavior.
- Do not treat raw monotonic readings as portable timestamps. Python leaves the reference point undefined. If a deadline crosses machines, processes with distinct clock epochs, or a persisted queue, define a separate protocol rather than transmitting an unqualified monotonic value.
The cited Python documentation establishes clock behavior and scheduler guidance, not the cause of any specific production failure. The useful diagnosis is to verify the clock domain first, then investigate execution delay independently.
