Rahul Vyas reports spending about $3.60 in API token charges on an AI-assisted redesign of ClinicLive. That figure covers model usage under his accounting method—not the full cost of the work: he also reviewed screenshots, chose directions and rejected a color palette, and gives no hours or labor cost. The project is a useful case study in where AI can help with implementation, but it is not a quote or benchmark for redesigning software.
What the $3.60 figure includes—and leaves out
Vyas says he totaled the redesign’s actual token consumption and priced it at the API list rates for the models he used. That is his reported API spend for this project, not an independently audited ledger or a current API price. Someone working through a subscription would not necessarily see the same charge as a separate bill item.

The accounting does not put a dollar value on the human work. Vyas describes reviewing screenshots, judging alternatives and vetoing a palette, but provides no time log or labor estimate. The $3.60 therefore should not be read as the total cost of the redesign, nor as a general estimate for similar projects.

How spending accumulated across the work
The figures below are Vyas’s cumulative project-ledger amounts at the redesign milestones. They are not per-part costs or market benchmarks.

For comparison, Vyas reports $6.20 in API spend for the earlier ClinicLive build. That is a comparison of his reported model-usage costs for two pieces of work, not evidence that redesigns generally cost less than initial builds.
What the redesign changed
This was broader than a color refresh. Vyas describes creating a design-token system and revising several parts of the clinic-management app, including booking, kiosk, waiting-room, staff-queue and chat experiences, plus the booking confirmation ticket.

- Booking slots were grouped into morning and afternoon, and controls were adapted for a 375-pixel-wide screen.
- The waiting-room wall display was reframed as signage rather than treated like an ordinary app page.
- A WAITED column was added to the staff queue, based on the question of what number reception staff actually use to act.
- The kiosk received a success state that takes over the screen and resets after eight seconds, with the next person in mind.
- The account also describes accessibility and motion work.
These are the developer’s descriptions of the changes, not the results of an independent usability evaluation.

Vyas says he began by considering four visual directions and selecting one. He later changed the palette after someone pointed out its similarity to another of his projects. He also describes practical interface decisions as starting with questions about the people using each screen and the context in which they use it: who is using this, and where are they standing?

“The AI executes judgment; it doesn’t replace it. Your questions are the design.”
That is Vyas’s interpretation of this project, not a measured division of effort. The account explains why token charges alone do not capture the design process, but does not quantify how much time or money the human direction required.

Why screenshot review mattered in this project
Vyas reports that reviewing rendered screenshots surfaced problems that code review had missed: an obsolete sidebar remained on the waiting-room display, and a top bar wrapped badly at phone width. He describes using a screenshot harness alongside the redesign work.
He also says the nine tests from the previous season stayed green throughout the redesign. That is a useful project-specific check, but passing those tests does not establish that every visual or functional regression was caught. The screenshots and test suite served different purposes in his account: rendered screens exposed context and layout issues, while the existing tests continued to pass.

What this case study can—and cannot—tell you
- It can show one developer’s reported API-token spend for a multi-surface redesign and the cumulative amounts he assigned to its milestones.
- It can illustrate how human review and product questions influenced visual and workflow decisions alongside AI-assisted implementation.
- It cannot establish a typical redesign price, total project cost, labor savings, or the cost another team would incur. The source gives no market average, labor hours, independent cost audit or comparable project data.
Vyas’s compact description of the effort’s human side is: “The real cost is the human eye — every screenshot reviewed, every direction judged, one palette vetoed outright.” It is a statement of perspective, not an itemized labor estimate.
