The Pocket Retro: What a Companion App Really Costs

The Pocket Retro build’s reported API token spend was about $7.20. That covers model usage, not the engineering and platform testing behind the app.

The Pocket companion-app build cost approximately $7.20 in API token usage, according to its author, Rahul Vyas. That is the logged model-usage calculation for one Blazor Hybrid project—not the total cost of building, testing, or validating a companion app.

What the $7.20 figure includes

In his September 3, 2026 build account, Vyas reports approximately $7.20 in cumulative API spend across the Pocket Retro companion-app work. He says he calculated it by multiplying recorded token consumption by the API list rates for the models used. The figure is presented as a token-cost view, not necessarily the amount that would appear on a subscription invoice. Read Vyas’s project account.

The reported totals are approximately $6.20 for season one, $3.60 for season two, and $7.20 for season three, with the trilogy rounded to $17. The article also gives a cumulative part-by-part table: the running amount rises from about $1.30 in the first two parts to $7.20 by the listed work’s end. These are the author’s project figures, not independently verified market estimates.

What the build involved

The project account describes nine capability interfaces and three hosts, with work spanning push notifications, haptics, a scanner, offline support, a signed build, and CI. Those details help explain why the token total should not be mistaken for the total effort: the API meter captures model usage, while the app also required implementation and platform-specific checking.

Why the API total is not the real project cost

The author describes platform investigations that did not yield the expected result: a Windows notification attempt produced no visible banner, and a Maps launch crashed in the emulator. The Maps behavior was not shown on a real device. The account therefore does not establish that every feature worked on every supported device.

Vyas characterizes the work beyond the token meter this way: “The real cost was the bench — a GPS fix to fake, airplane mode to toggle, a vibrator log to read, a Firebase console to watch, a desktop to photograph without photographing anything else.” In practical terms, the approximately $7.20 does not price the time spent setting up tests, diagnosing platform behavior, or confirming whether a feature works under real conditions.

How to interpret the number for another project

  • Use it as one project’s API-usage example. It is the author’s reported spend for this particular build, not a quote for developing a companion app generally.
  • Keep API use separate from engineering and validation. The figure does not include a full labor budget, device costs, or the effort of proving platform behavior.
  • Do not assume another build will cost the same. Model choices, token volume, processing tier, and context length affect API rates and usage costs.

OpenAI’s API pricing page lists rates by model and processing tier, with context-length distinctions. It is a live reference for current pricing, not evidence for Vyas’s historical token count or arithmetic. Check it for the model and tier relevant to a new estimate; do not treat the 2026 project total or any single current rate as a universal app-development budget.
